I tested Moose this morning before I left for work and his blood sugar was 52 mg/dl (his last insulin shot was 8pm last night - 2 units of Glargine). He was not exhibiting any symptoms of hypoglycemia like last time. I gave his high carb dry food + honey...but then had to leave for work :( I had already called out last week due to a hypoglycemic episode, and could not call out again. Thankfully my boyfriend is at home and keeping a strict eye on him while continuing to give him honey + high carb dry food. Unfortunately, my boyfriend does not know how to check his blood sugar. I will most certainly be teaching him when I see him tonight...He is going to message me when he is about to leave for work, in which case I will take my "lunch" and go home to continue treating Moose and checking his blood sugar.

I'm so scared. I have been crying at work all morning. I have been reading and rereading the "How to Treat Hypos" sticky and texting my boyfriend every few minutes. Per the advice of a lovely user yesterday, I am practicing the SLGS method and know that I need to decrease his insulin by .25...I'm just unsure of what to do at this exact moment since I am not home. Would it be wise to take him to a vet on my lunch break so that he can be monitored all day while I am at work? If his numbers have increased when I get home for lunch, am I OK to leave him by himself? I wish I could bring him to the office with me... :(

Maybe put a 911 next to your post to get more attention to your post or put it in the lantus forum. I can't give you advise of what to do. But I think he needs a bg on him how far is your lunch?

I don't, but I can pick some up on my way home. I saw mention of FF Grilled in Gravy being a good one, so I will stop by the Petco by my work and grab some.

I would get home as soon as you can to get a bg then post it. The good news is he did not have a shot this morning.

I have both, but have been using the Alpha Track2 since last year at the suggestion of my vet...not sure that I have any non-expired strips for the human one since I have not used it in a while.

Hi sorry to hear about your episode, is your boyfriend still with him? What food has he been giving him?

    Call out anytime...as you need!

Hi, I am around. That 52 was a nice number . If you skipped the shot, I wouldn't do too much carb loading. I would maybe give some MC to start and then maybe some LC to get him coasting a bit. Moose will go up on his own with a missed shot.

And don't feed too much...give just the gravy if you need to keep feeding the numbers.

Thank you so much for your help. I need to increase my arsenal of food it seems...I only have LC (I assume that means low carb, I'm still learning the lingo!) and what I assume is a HC dry food. I am definitely going to pick up some MC wet food once my paycheck comes in next week.

Sorry, I am at work and wasn't monitoring the website. Really glad to see that last reading. Be sure to test again in an hour or so. The HC food (and syrup) will wear off and need to make sure his numbers don't drop too low again.

You can make something more like MC by drizzling a little honey on LC food.

I think you're safe to go back to work, especially if the boyfriend is able to keep an eye on him for the afternoon.

Moose should be ok now with a 199 especially since he didn't have a shot this morning. You can leave some of the kibble out before you go if it helps ease your mind.

    Summing up the situation:

Last shot 2U Lantus at 8pm last night
52 on AT this morning, no shot
HC kibble and honey given throughout morning (no ability to test BG)
199 on AT around lunchtime (approx +16 from last shot?)

I do think you're safe to go to work if you leave some food out for him. This is a nerve-wracking situation, but staying employed is also important, and he's not in a critical situation at the moment.

If you can get another test right before you leave, please post it!

Can you leave some food out in case he needs it?

I know each cat is different but Merry responds a lot better to corn syrup than he did to honey or maple syrup. Corn syrup gives him a really good spike to his BG when he's running low. The Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers canned foods are about 15% carb I think & I found that Wellness Signature Selects is around 28% carb if I remember correctly. So if the number isn't too low you can try the FF Gravy Lovers but if it's quite low you can use the Wellness Sig Selects for a bigger boost. There's lots of other foods that work as well but those are what I have in Merry's Hypo Toolkit.

Moose is either bouncing/going up on his own due to the NS/carb loading with all the yummy HC dry food. I would say you are safe to go back to work.

The dry food should last longer in the system then if it was wet HC, so I think you are good for the afternoon.

Definitely a reduction tonight-- post here with your pre-shot if you're at all uncertain about the number. Whew!

Thank you for the suggestions! I will pick up a few MC and HC wet foods on my next outing. It sounds like you have a well stocked hypo kit! I will definitely take a page out of your book :)

Thank you for checking up on us! Doing well. Decreased his dose to 1.75 units this evening at 8pm EST. Just checked his blood sugar +2 and it's 220 mg/dl. I admit, I may stay up most of the night to keep testing just in case. I don't work tomorrow so I'm fine with it! I just want to make sure that he will be OK :cat:
