Just got home after being gone in hospital for 5 days having my baby. Set kitties up w auto feeder with young again zero carb food and freeze dried treats. Had care taker fill feeder daily with measured portions and cats got one can of wet food in morning and fresh water daily. My husband came home every day from hospital and gave Ozzy a shot once a day and he missed a shot once a day for 4 days.

We had a baby camera set up so we could feed the auto feeders but the hospital had bad service so after day 1 the camera wasnt available to us.

Just got home and Ozzy seems a little out of it. his feeder had all food compartments full and wet food from this morning was barely touched. When camera was working we saw the other cat going to the feeders mostly but when my husband came home to give insulin he did see Ozzy eat some so I know he didn't go completly without food the entire time. But I am really not sure how much he ate while I was gone.

I just tested Ozzy's ketones on the nova max ketone tester and it came back with 0.9 as the result. Is this normal??

Here are his numbers last few days. Sorry online SS is not up to date as we have been using notepad. Ozzy is tested everyday and receives insulin every day.

    2/3: 7:05am 264, 1u lantus
2/4: 9:25am 358, 1.25u lantus Husband overshot because his number is higher than normal. He never goes over 300 usually
    2/5: 9:15am 234, 1u lantus
    2/6: 3:30 pm 205, ketones 0.9

I am actually surprised Ozzy's numbers have not been higher since he missed a dose every day. On insulin his Preshot numbers have usually been higher. Maybe there is something to the YA zero carb??

It is 4pm now. Ozzy gets insulin at 6:30 pm.

What do you guys think? Are ketones normal? Usually the meter ALWAYS says "LO". Should I give him insulin now or wait till his scheduled time ? Maybe kitty is just stressed from me being gone? He gets major separation anxiety. He is eating now. I have been very stressed about what to do with my kitty while i went to hospital to deliver my baby for MONTHS! I did the best I could and just hope he is ok. This is the longest i have ever left him since his DKA episode and diabetes diagnosis over a year ago.

Thanks in advice for any help!

    Congratulations on your baby :bighug:

Ketones are neg. I will look for the range but I think it starts at 2.x (you are using a blood meter correct?)

See what others have to say but I would hold the dose and get back to regular shooting and see what his numbers are with the consistancy in dosing (dose & time).

You must post a picture and give us details on the new addition. :D

    Welcome back, and congratulations!!!

I agree with Lizzie-- ketones fine (but good to keep an eye on them, since they've bumped up over "Lo"). Just hold the dose for a little while until things stabilize (if anything can seem stable with the new addition :woot: ). Great job juggling everything, wow!

Congratulations on your baby! Please post pictures!
Personally, I would resume with his normal dose of insulin. The lantus depot will have to re-establish itself since he's only been getting one shot a day so it may take a few days for you to see better numbers.

    Here is from my notes:
The latest published research/studies in cats indicate ketones will begin to show up at readings of 2.4 and 2.55 on a blood ketone meter

Kitties are doing well and seem very protective and interested in the baby. Ozzy seems back to normal...well as normal as possible with a new baby in the house. Thanks for all the comments! 20180206_154137.jpg

Update 2/8: Tested Ozzy's ketones again tonight on the Nova Max Ketone Meter (blood) and they went up from 0.9 to 1.7. We left down that YA zero carb in feeders and I think he still had been nibbling on it last few days. I asked my husband to remove it but he forgot in all the whirl with the new baby. I am not sure if that is why his ketones are going up or if its because he is majorly stressed from the new baby. He has been acting different but that could be becauseof the new baby. Both cats have been.

We are now watering down his food and making sure he has access to fresh water at all times. I notice him going to drink more now too which we never did before on wet food only. Here are his numbers last few days:
    2/7: 8:10am 228, 1u; 7:49pm 235, 1u
    2/8: 7:30am 232, 1u; 10:30am 256; 7:00pm 257, 1.25u, ketones 1.7 on nova max blood meter

His numbers are not too incredibly high. I have seen him with higher numbers than this with no ketones. He only missed 3 shots of insulin over a course of 3 days so I'm surprised to be in this situation. Could this be occurring because he is so stressed? What can we do to flush these ketones out before we end up in another DKA situation? I can't afford another $5k vet bill or to deal with this with a 4 day old baby. This is really stressing me out and was my biggest concern leaving for the hospital to deliver my baby. We gave him a larger dose of insulin tonight to try to help. Can we give him bigger doses of insulin with some higher carb food to help over next few days so we can get more insulin in him??

    Please help Kitty Committee!!!

    Thanks!!!

BG does not need to be crazy high for ketones to develop. The recipe is :
not enough calories+not enough insulin+infection, inflammation or any systemic stress.
Hydration is important so avoiding dry food is important-it can contribute to dehydration.

Thanks for your response. We didn't have a choice on feeding the dry food unfortunately. Ozzy has not had a lick of dry food for over a year since his diabetes diagnosis. We had to have a plan in place for when we were gone at the hospital for 5 days having a baby. The dry food we did give him is zero carbs. He also got a can of wet food every day along with 1 shot of insulin (instead of 2), and fresh water was left out daily.

I cannot do anything about the new stress in our house as we have a new baby. We have Ozzy back on wet food only and he is back on his insulin routine. We are watering down his food as well to help flush the ketones that are developing. My question is: is there more we can do or should we do something different? Should we give him higher carb food so we can give him bigger doses of insulin without him crashing?

    Thanks!

    Sounds good.
continue to monitor for ketones and keep a close eye on him the next few cycles. Let the changes back to 2 shots per day, the increase in dose and change back to all wet food settle in for a few cycles and then reevaluate.

    Are all Ps in place?
(Peeing, pooping, purring, playing & preening)

Is there any chance he has a uti or any other infection brewing?

Where on the ss can the data for the recent year be found?

    All Ps.are in place.

I doubt he has a uti. Everthing was fine before we left to have the baby.

Sorry SS is not up to date online. We have been keeping numbers on a notepad. I can post the last 2 weeks if that will help.

    Hi Jo!

I wondered where you and Ozzy went. It seems you were very busy constructing a new human! Congratulations!

Posting the last two weeks of data on your SS would be very helpful - you know how data-driven we are here! Start a new tab for 2018.

I'm sure you're busy trying to get in a routine with Jake, but kitties like routines, too, so the sooner you can get Ozzy back on schedule, the better. I don't thing an increase is the way to go yet - concentrate on consistency - shots every 12 hours, wet food only, on schedule, etc. After a few days of testing, you should be able to see if he needs more insulin. Keep monitoring those ketones, and if they go up, post for advice ASAP.

I hope both your furbabies adjust quickly and well to their new brother. One good thing about having a diabetic cat - it prepares you for the sleep deprivation you'll experience with a newborn!
    ;)

BTW, none of my business, so feel free to tell me to buzz off, but why five days in the hospital - typically people go home nowadays the same day? I hope all is well with you and Jake.:bighug:

Congrats Jo! He is precious, love the name!

No ketones as of yet, as others have said, on a human meter ketones in cats start showing up at 2.4 -2.5. Be vigilant as Sandy said the numbers do not have to be high for ketones to form. Bubba was throwing ketones when he was in the mid 200's.

Lot of water and make sure he is eating as the recipe for DKA is not enough insulin + in appetence + a systemic stress or infection.

Thank you so much!! We are hanging in there! Baby Jakey is growing so fast and we are settling into a routine. Ozzy is doing great We flushed those ketones out that were forming thanks to the advice of my kitty committee friends here. I am so amazed at how the cats have reacted to the baby. We were really nervous especially of my other cat Figgie becaue he is so territorial and aggressive towards basically anyone but me and my husband. But they have done amazingly well with the baby and seem quite protective of him. And scaredy cat Ozzy rarely runs away when the baby cries and Figgie oddly seems calmer in general. Another thing we noticed is Ozzy's starting BGs numbers are almost the same at the start of every cycle. Not sure if it is the baby in the environment or because I have been home all day for months (he gets separation anxiety). Hope this keeps up though So all is well. Hope for you and your fur babies too!
