can someone please help me, I have a 13 yo male named Bella who was diagnosed with diabetes 10 months ago. He was put on nuvolin n, 4u am, 4u pm, it was working very well but now his glucose levels are over 600, after I give him his insulin I wait about 2 hrs and it’s down to like 465. I have been giving him half cup Orijen cat and kitten daily and natural balance high protein wet with extra water, last night I only gave the wet and his glucose level was again over 600, I can’t afford to take him to vet at this time due to I had to take him to emergency vet w weeks ago he was having trouble peeing and he had crystals in his urine, they gave him antibiotics, Xanax and something to relax his urethra. Please help me and I am so worried

Hi honey, I am so sorry your going thru so much. I have no experience with Novalin although I have read things on the forum that suggest it may not be the best choice of insulin for a cat. That being said I will tag some others for you with much more knowledge than myself....hang in there help is on the way:bighug:

I understand the cost plays a huge role for me! I know my cat had to have 2 rounds of antibiotic as the first did not work. She had a UTI months ago. The infection causes numbers to be higher,at least my Baby’s did. The long lasting convenia is not the best to treat a UTI, I don’t know what your cat was given but maybe check that out. I wish I knew more to help & I hope others will speak. :bighug::cat:

He was also diagnosed with focal facial seizures at the emergency clinic, they didn’t give him anything for this, they told me that if he were an outside cat she could give me many reason, that it might be brain cancer and the only way to tell is an MRI

Hi there. I don't have the experience with Novolin as the sole insulin. We used it along with the Lantus to help rid ketones and some insulin resistance. I do know that it is a fast and short acting insulin.

Is your kitty still on the AB? Does he seem to be in pain? I am wondering if some infection is still present. A call to vet might be in order.

I am wondering if the dry food you are giving is way too high in carbs. We promote a wet diet under 10% for carbs. I could not find you wet food on our food chart ( Natural Balance High Protein) Do you happen to know the carb count for it? Anyone?

What kind of test numbers were you getting while he was on the antibiotic?

It’s so frustrating to try and try to get it right and what’s best for Bella, I just want him to be ok and happy, the reason why I give him A little dry food is that he has been on it since he was a baby and if I don’t he thinks he is starving and gets into trash and eats things he shouldn’t, I had to take all bags out of little garbage cans cause he would try and eat them, I give him good quality wet food and I always add water to it, it makes him eat more

I am thinking that perhaps the UTI is still present and another round of antibiotics might be needed. It's worth a call to the vet who treated him.

I don’t know the carb count, but expect it may be too high. It has peas, beans and tapioca, all starches.
As far as the Novolin, I’m assuming you are using Novolin N? That is different from the Novolin R that Bobbie mentioned. Though still short acting. Here’s some more info. http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/beginners-guide-to-novolin-humulin-nph.186097/

First you need to know where I'm coming from with my answer. I've had cats for 40 years and have spent obscene amounts of money on them. Right now we only have six cats, some were abused, and have had as many as nine at one time. The only time I have ever experienced something close to anger with vets has been at emergency clinics. They don't know you, they don't know your cat and they operate on a very large budget. Anything neurological is next to guesswork and saying the word "cancer" just scares the crap out of anyone. Our Jasper had a spinal tap, incredibly painful for humans, then an MRI. It was only after we signed up for a $1,200 MRI that they mentioned it would be $600 more for general anesthetic. In the end it was all for nothing. This is the same clinic that murdered Noah's brother and told us our dog had cancer and would not make it to Christmas. Almost a year later she finally succumbed to what she really had, a cyst in her GI tract. It's borderline unethical for them to scare the crap out of you based on one visit. Please talk to your vet, the person that knows you, and go from there. Also inquire about a needle biopsy. Did they elaborate on why an outdoor cat would be more likely to have this condition?

I agree, the doctor that usually ( I should have added that work in my previous post) treats Bella is the best place to start.

Bellasmom, I'm sorry for what looked like irrational anger that did not solve anything. It's too long of a story but I have been where you are now both personally and with cats and dogs. Sorry everyone, we all know someone that has been mistreated at an emergency clinic. Just so frustrating.

Sorry, I have no experience with Novalin N at all, much less as the main insulin. Has your vet ever mentioned using one of the longer lasting insulins? Best of luck.
