    Hi Kitty Committee -

I am not sure if anyone has posted on this or if you are impacted at your local store, but two walmarts by my house have indicated they will be discontinuing the relion u-100 29 gauge insulin syringes. Bummer because these have been very affordable for us.

Anyone else come across the same thing? What brand insulin syringes do you use and where do you get them?

Would they still have the 30 gauge syringes? That's what I used.

Not sure. I would call and check with your local store.

I thought everyone using the U100 relion syringes used the 29 gauge. Have I been using the wrong gauge all along???? Hope others will chime in here.

No, they had 29 and 30 and possibly 31 gauge. I just chose 30 gauge.

Does the gauge affect the insulin dosing in any way or its just the circumference of the needle (thinness/thickness)?

It's just the thickness. It's the person's preference. It has no impact on the insulin. :)

I use 31 gauge but BD brand as we can’t get Relion in Canada.

I use either the 30 or 31 gauge Relion syringes (whichever they happen to have that day)

29 gauge poke a bigger "hole" than 30....or 31....the higher the number, the tinier the needle

I'm more comfortable using the 29 or 30 gauge. I just picked up syringes today and my Walmart is discontinuing 29 and 30

What about the 31 gauge? Seems like a lot of folks use this syringe. Walmart still carries other brands of syringes so you may still be able to get your preferred gauge, but not at the super low relion prices (unfortunately).

Hi everyone, as far as brands go, any recommendations? Here in Canada, I have found some lower priced syringes available online (Sure Comfort and Carepoint), at a much lower price than BD, which I find very expensive. Has anyone tried either of these?
    Thanks :)

I’m in Canada too, and use the BD I 100 - 30ml, and if you buy the 100 pack they are averaging Cad$45/box and Shoppers Drug mart gives seniors 20% off on Thursday. I don’t tell them it’s for my cat, I tell them it’s for an older neighbour who doesn’t drive so I’m getting them. Not sure about prices in USA, but I do know you need a prescription and here you don’t. Same for the insulin, no prescription needed.

Shoppers is a very expensive place to shop for diabetes supplies in my part of Canada. Shop around. My local Safeway pharmacy had a box of BD's for $34. No discounts, just the regular everyday price.

I tried to get the 31 gauge Relion brand at Walmart last week in the 1/3 mL's (dosage up to 30 units), but they didn't have any. I asked if that was temporary or if they were going to get more in, but the tech didn't really seem to know for sure. So instead I ended up with 31's in the 1/2mL (dosage up to 50 units) syringes, and I made sure to ask if they had the 1/2 unit markings on them (I think he said they did). I even did a quick look through the package but I guess my vision was off that day or I just had a mental check-out moment because I noticed yesterday that these do NOT have the 1/2 unit lines! Gee whiz! Now that I think about it, I guess that makes sense b/c the demarcation lines would be minuscule on a larger capacity 50cc syringe, right? *sigh*. Live and learn, I guess. I wouldn't really be bothered by this but as of now I'm dosing in 1/2 unit increments so having those lines there is super helpful. I can still use the whole unit syringes if the dosage goes up or down to a whole number, so it's not a total bust, but still.... ugh. I ordered different syringes on the ADW website and made sure they had the 1/2 unit markings. I guess it's obvious I'm still sort of new at this :)

Wendy, $34 is a great price for BD's! That same box here in Quebec is almost $70 (yes, everything is more expensive in Quebec), which is why I've decided to go on-line for pretty much everything. I found a place that sells a 10ml vial of Lantus for $72, but I don't know about ordering insulin online, bad idea? I'm going to order the CarePoint syringes (28.99 for 100) and see how they are. I'll update here.

Good to know this. I will be calling my Walmart pharm today and see if it's going to effect my store and if so, I will stock up!

Unfortunately Shoppers was the cheapest around me, I checked over 10 stores and all other prices were higher.............good that you can get the supplies cheap!

I used adwdiabetes.com for my needle supplies in the US. Not sure if they can ship to Canada or not. I just checked their website and they said to call as they may be able to help for some international orders.

Thanks, I live on the Buffalo border and have a US mail box.......I'll try them, but it's 30% more for the exchange rate on the money and I thought to get syringes you needed a prescription?

Good point on the exchange rate, that could negate a lot of the potential savings. The US is weird about prescriptions for needles. Each state sets their own rules. I have never needed one in Florida where ADW is located. Looks like NY also does not require a script.
