This is the RX for the Epogen - can someone that has given chime in and let me know if this sounds right. To be honest I am extremely nervous about starting this med. I have read horror stories.

Epogen 2000 units/ml Injectable 1ml

20 Units (U100 Insulin Needles/Syringe 0.3 cc, 29 gauge, 1/2") - 3 times per week.

Should it be given outside of the insulin (at a different time)? Any other advise or suggestions welcome. I should have it tonight or tomorrow (haven't had a chance to track it) and would like to get started ASAP (despite being nervous).

Lizzie, let me check my old paperwork, I did use Epogen, but very briefly about ten years ago, and it was with my CRF kitty. I'm just a bit cautious on offering suggestions, because Gizmo has other things going on, that my girl didn't, and her anemia was quite severe when I attempted the epogen treatment. But, as long as I preface my comments with that, and the fact that it was but a brief experience, and wouldn't consider myself very knowledgeable, then I'm happy to give you whatever feedback I can, as I truly hope this will help Gizmo.

Wow, that was actually harder (in a few ways ) than I thought it would be. So anyway, I had pre-drawn syringes, but note that dose is based on weight. I had instructions for 400IU every three days..she was under 10 lbs, so that makes sense. Sounds like you have the most common strength of epogen (2000u/ml), but since dosing depends on weight, and a vial of 2000u/ml should be good for about 4-8 doses, depending on weight. How much does Gizmo weigh?

Thanks , it's really ok, I'm glad I can help you . I think you are around my dose then, a bit higher. I recall reading on Tanya's CRF it's 100 units/kg of weight, so Gizmo would need around 500IU...one vial is 1ml, you'll get about 4 doses from the 2000u/ml vial, so that's 0.20ml/dose on your syringe.I see that they said 20 units/3 times a week, so I think the math adds up! Looks like the right dose to me...ouch, my head hurts from this math exercise . You could also ask the vet to draw up the dose for you, then you can be sure it's ok

ETA sorry, also I don't know about dosing around insulin, but I can't see there being any need to? I just can't say for sure.

 

I know what you mean about the math - lol. I did a quick calculation in my head last night based on the formula at Tanya's site and thought it was about right.

Vet gave me the info to order and it is being delivered to my home so I am on my own . Things I have read was too high of a dose so I just wanted to make sure it was inline with the norm.

 

I know it's a hard position to be in , hopefully others with experience will chime in, but I think the dose is just fine.

I unit was given to a small kitty who was at 16% - that was 3 times a week. It is also recommended that you do not go over 35% as a target, because that reduces the risk of thrombosis.

Is the epogen for the anemia? What does it do and did they discern why she has the anemia? I'm sorry if you all ready discussed this and I miss it.

 

Yes.

It helps them to produce red blood cells (in the bone marrow). They didn't test to find out if it was or was not regenerative but treatment is the same anyway. But yes, he has slowly been getting worse on the anemia so it is time to act.
