Hi My name is Jessica. I have a 16yr old tabby that was diagnosed with CKD last year. About three weeks ago, he fractured his femoral head bone. He had surgery on the 15 (FHO). His labs were very high for glucose 500, which I assumed was because he detests the carrier and we drove 1.5hrs to the hospital. I tested him last week at home after finally getting a urine sample w/ a glucose strip. It was dark brown. I have an appointment with the vet to learn how to test and administer meds. I'm very frightened. I have no idea what to feed him. The doctor is recommending the d/m diet. He loves hard food. I have been trying unsuccessfully for a year to get him on soft only. He tends to lose weight if I remove the hard completely. I have him down to a little a day. He also loves his snacks. He is eating fancy feast the gravy classics w/ NOW senior hard food.
    Thanks
    Jessica

Hi Jessica welcome! The best food for your kitty is a low carb wet food. Unfortunately, the ones with gravy are too high in carbs. Here’s some good info for transitioning to wet food. http://catinfo.org/docs/TipsForTransitioning1-14-11.pdf Come over to the main health forum and tell us more about your kitty, and we’ll help you learn all about this sugar dance!

Welcome. Most people here feed fancy feast classic or Friskies pate foods. No gravy. There are very few dry foods that are OK. My fave is Young Again Zero carb which can be found on Youngagainpetfood.com. They will send a free sample if you ask. The dm food is expensive and no better than grocery store foods.

Welcome to the forum Jessica. I am sorry to hear your fur-kid broke his bone(s) and had surgery. Poor guy.

I feed our kittehs Fancy Feast classics. There are about 10 types and they are all low carb, medium protein. And the price is great too - about 50 cents a can.

Testing blood glucose at home is a bit daunting at first. But you'll be a pro in a week. I always feed Leo right after, so he gets real cooperative as he lines up for the food!

Thank you!!! I just picked up the insulin today. The vet wants me to do every 12 hrs until we get him on a stable dose.

The first few weeks I had to bribe her with treats... She quickly started associating testing with treats and extra loving.

    Janet,

What kind of treats are you giving him? is the alphatrek accurate? The Alphatrek II is what I am seeing. It has some mixed reviews.

I use a little dry EVO turkey and chicken as a treat and mix a teaspoon or so in with the Fancy Feast Liver and Chicken fed am and pm.
