i gave him a 3.5 dose - i fed and tested him and he was 431 so put the dose next to it. ok - i wondered if i should give a late shot if it climbs but will skip shot tonight. +1 after eating was 164 and +2 is 217.

If you use a human meter, we'd say 200 for newbies. You aren't a newbie but it still takes some experimentation to figure out your no shot number. You can try a full dose at something a bit lower than 200 on a day you can monitor to see what happens. If it works out OK you can try lowering it a bit more on another occasion. The determining factor would be what nadir value you get. With Vetsulin it's best to have a bit of a safety cushion at nadir - say BG range of 90 - 110. That's because of Vetsulin's ability to drop them hard and low.

Every dose is a learning situation. Next time he's close to 200 but a bit under try the full dose or close to it. Today, for example, you could have tried 3 u. When you have cycles where the PS is high at one end but too low to shoot at the other it can mean the dose is too high. It's best to try a slight reduction to see if you can even out the PSs somewhat at numbers that allow you to give insulin AM and PM.

Good. Can you do a curve today? You need data over the cycle to evaluate the dose.

He might have dropped low last night and is now rebounding from that. I suggest you get a before bed test every night. It can give you an early idea of what he might do overnight.

At some point soon it would be good to find a moderate dose that you can keep for a few days running. The ups and downs in BG that make you change his dose might contribute to erratic numbers.

ok i will do before bed testing. what are your suggestions on a moderate dose? i am pleased with the lower numbers but puzzled as well. he did have a dental about a month ago and had a tooth extracted. would that have any bearing on the lower numbers? thank you!

Yes, addressing dental issues can have a positive effect on BG levels. Here's what I suggest if you want to try to get him settled:
    • drop his dose to 2 u and keep it AM and PM for 2 days, regardless of the BG numbers you get
    • if those 2 days of data suggest that 2 u is too low then increase to 2.25 u on the third day
    • hold 2.25 u for 2 days both AM and PM
    • go to 2.5 u on the third day if data indicates the need ... and so on.
Sometimes you have to backtrack and try something different when you're having trouble finding a good dose. Changing the dose *slightly* in response to pre shot numbers can work once kitty is more settled in a good dose range. Until you get there being very consistent and methodical is the way to go.

Thank you so much! Will give it a try. And thanks for the info on the dental. We will see how the next few days go.
