    Hi,

I’m new to this forum. My baby, Stewie, who is a rag doll Siamese, was diagnosed with diabetes in late December. Stewie will be 15 on April 29 and up until recently has been very healthy. When I first started giving him shots, I wasn’t very good at it. But as time went on it became easier and I would make the “tent” and give Stewie his shot. I always made sure not to give the shot in the same area, etc. Recently, however, it’s become hard for me to “tent” his skin. I don’t know if it’s because he has gained some weight or what. And I’m having a hard time to find thin skin to poke. It seems his skin has gotten “tougher”. I usually give him his shot between his shoulder blades, but as I said, I’m having a hard time finding loose skin. Has anyone else experienced this? I feel bad for him because it’s taking me longer to find a suitable place for his shot. And sometimes when I do, I feel like I have the needle all the way in, press the plunger, but when I pull the syringe out, it feels like only the tip of the needle went in. I feel around for wet fur and I even smell his fur and I don’t feel any wet or smell the insulin, so I assume it is going in. Poor baby. I just wonder whether anyone has experienced anything like this. I also would like to know whether the needle must be completely inserted into his skin for the shot to work.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Some people have better luck just grabbing some skin between thumb and forefinger and rolling it back to expose a line of skin and shooting there. My guy has a lot of loose skin along his sides so I pull it up tautly, feel for the "tent door" and inject there. Works well and if my aim is good he doesn't react at all. There's a lot more space there to move the injection site around too.

Thank you. I have been able to find some looser skin near his side and have used that spot. Your kitty is beautiful!

Thanks! He's one of three kitten siblings I took home from a horse stable so no fancy breeding but an excellent kitty nonetheless.
