What do you feed a non diabetic cat?

Hi,
My 15 year old cat was diagnosed with diabetes 3 months after we started feeding him Hill's Prescription Dry W/D (vet prescribed because he had 3 UTI's in a short period of time). We were instructed that all cats in the household should be on this food so Bam wouldn't have any opportunities to eat anything else.

Since our emergency vet experience two weeks ago, we started home testing and put Bam on low carb canned food. I felt uneasy about the Prescription Diet and stopped giving it to our almost 3 year old non diabetic cat. I switched him to a Fromm's dry food.

My question is, should my younger cat be eating low carb wet food as well? I've had cats all my life and they've all had dry kibble diets. Bam is the first diabetic cat I've ever had. I'm worried that the dry kibble is what caused it. Am I being paranoid?

 

I have also had cats all my life and have always fed them dry food, but knowing what I do now about dry food, I would not feed it to a cat again.. diabetic or not. (I do use Young Again Mature Zero as a treat/food topper, but not as a meal or for free-feeding.)

The gospel here is that low carb wet food is best for all cats. Teasel's non-diabetic brother was a little too heavy when Teasel was diagnosed. I switched his brother to the same canned low carb diet as Teasel gets and two years later - no excess weight. It was easy to do and involved no food deprivation, only that diet change.

I was thinking the same thing. I've always purchased high quality foods like Fromms and Wellness. I'm feeding my diabetic kitty Fancy Feast now. I'm hoping the food quality is as good?...

 

I’m not familiar with Fromms, but wellness is a good food. As far as it’s comparison to Fancy Feast, I’m not sure. Read the ingredients list to start. The difference, if any, may be in the quality of the meat. The best commercial diet for any cat is a low carb wet food because it’s the most similar to his natural diet. Have you read THIS?

 

I switched everyone to a low carb canned food. Hopefully sooner than later I plan on making their cat food. I bought some chicken thighs this afternoon and partially cooked them as a first step in transitioning to a homemade food. My sugar cat loved it and one civvie loved it!

 

I switched all cats to low carb wet food regardless their age and it was the best thing I could do, they started to be more active and their hair improved a lot, they also loosed a little weight ( not so good in their case since they were kind of skiny but it was not much ) and I could see they were all feeling much better. And it made my life easier not having to worry about Babu getting a hold of something he souldn't
