Info on progress please

Good morning! My puss has been diabetic since june 2017 on lantus twice daily on the SLGS method eating recommended fancy feast varieties. Since the beginning of this year he has only required 2 insulin doses. Hes doing exceptionally well! My question is do I continue his daily testing? Just to make sure hes stable? I will be keeping his diet the same regardless. Please forgive me for the many test blanks as my daughter has had serious medical issues this year. And thank for any advice/suggestions. Kerri

 

I really can't give any input without seeing a spreadsheet. Is the link in your signature to your cat's spreadsheet? If so, it's not opening for me. Do you have the sharing permissions set to "anyone with the link"?

If they stay in normal numbers for 2 weeks without insulin, we consider them in remission.

At first you should continue to test daily, but as long as the numbers stay normal, you can gradually reduce the amount of tests you do....down to a couple times a week, then maybe once a week, etc.

You want to test often enough that you catch it early if they start to fall out of remission, but you don't need to continue to test twice a day.

Of course if you see any signs of diabetes (increase in drinking, peeing, eating), you'll want to get back to testing more often to make sure you know what's going on.

 

If you get a test that's over 100, I would recommend testing again 2-3 hours after feeding. If the BG is lower, you know the pancreas is working. What you want to watch for is the numbers trending up.

Just so I'm clear, the only times you've given insulin in 2018 has been on two occasions in January? Frankly, I would suggest you sneak in a couple of tests during the cycle and if those mid-cycle numbers are pretty much the same, it looks like Fatty may be in remission.

 

Thank you sienne and gabby. Do you mean some random tests through the day? I did a curve on 15th January, numbers 3 hourly from 7am were 6.0, 6.3, 4.7, 5.3, 5.5, 6.2. Are these classed as normal blood numbers?? It would be great to do less testing but he doesn't seem to mind it at all. He seems to do great on the fancy feast.

normal blood glucose numbers are 50-120 (2.8-6.7) on a human meter

 

Ah thank you....so his numbers are mostly normal now
