Has this happened to anyone? At 5:45, Chloe was at 28. Then she was eating and I tested again and she was HI. I'm freaking out!

Do a third test right now, Roberta. One of the two previous ones was a dud.

It's HI again. I couldn't find any strips for the Everpaw so I used the Relion.

I think I'd better give her some insulin. Do you think 2 units is enough or too much?

PLease DO NOT give insulin until you get that third test. I can't say this strongly enough. If the actual BG is close to the first 28 and not the second HI giving insulin is dangerous.

I'll echo Kris. NO INSULIN UNTIL YOU TEST AGAIN.

Since you got two high readings I'm guessing the 28 was a bad test.

I agree. The two HIs are more likely to be correct. Please take down the red 911 now that this has been addressed.

I changed the battery in the Relion and tested again at 7:00. It still said HI (3rd time). She's been eating this whole time. I gave her 2 units of the Prozinc.
Thank you for your support. I'm still nervous, though.

Get a before bed test to ease your mind.

I don't see an explanation to why you could have a jump of 500 during a cycle..... for your future reference.

Very often when the blood glucose goes lower than the body is used to.....
hormones will get dumped in response as a protection mechanism ...
we call this a bounce..... so it is possible to test and have a 100 and test an hour later and have a 500. That would be an example.

If they have been diabetic for a while without treatment, the body adjusts to a new normal.... such as 500's....
their body has forgotten what it is like to be normal.....

However, while it is a protective response, it is not guaranteed.....
that is why testing is so very important in managing FD.

More likely it was too small of a sample or wonky strip. Bad reading.

There is another post regarding this in Prozinc-land. I believe it is titled "Chloe's vet visit". She posted here and there.

It was concluded that the 500 was in fact a real number, and the lower number was due to not enough blood on the strip.
