Rufus 195. I was expecting 300 or 400 for various reasons. No insulin at all yesterday, and a half dose and a reduced dose on Sunday. 4 cycles later we are 195. Pretty good I say. I was also worried because I left out some super high carb food for Ozzie that I forgot to pick up. Not sure if Rufus ate any of that. I did leave out some wet food for Rufus and he hardly ate any of it. He still even after dental will only lick wet food, and will not bite it like he used to, so he doesn't actually eat much of it. ????

If he’s not eating, he’s likely nauseous from the pancreatitis. Have you tried giving medication for it?

He's been on ondansetron since last Monday. I also started giving him pepcid again and seems to improve the lip smacking at least. I'll keep an eye oh him today, see if he eats dry food. I'm going to buy some sheeba today to see if he'll "bite" that food. Some many things going on with him.

Looks like he's recovering nicely from yesterday's skips!

Maybe his food sensitivities/allergies are causing the smacking, too. It's can be tough trying to figure out the source...hopefully you'll hit on what it is.

Yeah that's the hard part. Allergies, intolerance, stomach acid, pancreatitis, lower BG, kidneys. So many things. I just remembered he used to like a certain brand of soft pate. I see they have a duck version and it's low in carbs and phos so I think that hits all the boxes.

I was going to run to the store but I'd be gone for about 2 hours. Did you notice how much his BG dropped in 2 hours? That's a lot, no? I think I'll stick around until this afternoon and see what his numbers do.

That is a pretty decent drop, especially for how early in the cycle it is. Getting a +3 would be a good idea!

I wonder if he needs a softer pate? Hard to say what is bothering him with so many plates in the air.

Tiki Cat has a Velvet Mousse formula - think pate beaten up just a tad bit more. I have used it for Jones and my CKD kitty when they were not interested in food but needed to get some calories and water in...not sure about the food intolerance though.

It's so strange. He's eating dry kibble more and better, but not often. Treats you can tell is easier. But the soft food is almost like he forgot how to eat it! I'll give these Tikis a check out! It's so hard to say what he is allergic to. I know Turkey gives him issues.

Yep, he is on the move. I put feelers out once again to some members who have a bit more experience with flying down the dosing ladder like Rufus is doing now, so hopefully you'll get more input about dosing today.

Sorry but I can’t recall if you have tried cerenia for nausea. Some cats respond better to it, some to ondansetron, and some need both. Sometimes just a switch from one to the other helps.

We've tried cerenia 3 different times and it didn't seem to do much. Pepcid worked pretty good, then we switched to ondan and it worked awesome. Then he had dental and he was off for 4 or 5 day, and back on again now but isn't working like it did before dental for some reason. I would try cerenia gain, but it was really expensive from my vet. The specialist said theirs was cheap? I don't know, I'll ask next monday when we go for a follow up.

I usually get an RX and buy meds on line. Last time I bought some I didn’t even need at the vet and it was double the price. I should have gone back with it but didn’t.

Oh I've done something like that too. Vet sold me some waterless shampoo for like $25, and found some on Amazon for $5. Never returned it! As far as meds go, maybe Sams Club has cerenia? I'm going tomorrow to pick up a refill on the ondan. I'll ask them :)

    Look at Rufus go!

So far so good. Rufus has come down the dosing ladder without any drops below 50. Bravo!

Since after 2 consecutive skips he didn’t even hit yellow and resuming at 4u has brought him quickly to the 70s, consider reducing by .5u instead of .25u. See how the rest of the cycle plays out.

    Go team Rufus!

Just one note to keep in mind for reducies....I believe Sean is still using his AT (correct me if I'm wrong, Sean) in addition to following SLGS, so we definitely don't want to see him hitting 50s :nailbiting:!

I don't know if Sam's would stock cerenia, but it would be worth asking if they can get it for you.

I always ordered Trix's Cerenia from Valley Vet - at the time, they had the best online prices, which were much better than my vet's prices. Of course you do need a script, but Valley Vet will contact your vet for it. It's $11.99 for 4 tablets at Valley Vet. Keep in mind, too, that each tablet is usually split into 4 doses.

So far Rufus has come down the dosing ladder without any drops into the lime green zone ...Bravo!

    May the trend continue!

Interesting about dosage. Rufus was taking 1 16mg a day! He was 24 pounds at the time, but still. And even at that dose it didn't change anything. Actually now that I think about it, he was at his very worse when he was on it last. pre diagnosis diabetes, teeth, pancreatitus. Maybe this time around it would work.

Dosing is based on weight, so maybe that's why he was on such a hefty dose. Definitely follow vetty's suggestion on how much to give! Trix was a wee one, just around 10lbs when she first started taking cerenia, so her dose was lower.

It is also possible to give onda and cerenia at the same time; however I have no first-hand experience with that, so it is definitely something else to discuss with the vet.

Doubtful Sam’s club would have it, unlike onda, which is a human medicine as well, cerenia was developed for dogs and cats. Online pet pharmacies are probably the best option.

I don’t know if it scales pound for pound, but Asia is about 10 pounds and they gave her Cerenia injectable .8 mL, I now give her .5 mL if she needs it. The vet did say the .8 mL was an aggressive dose for when it’s called for. It would be worth considering trying both since he’s still having issues. The cerenia took the problem away entirely and I would guess is the same for many with onda as well, it should vanquish the lip smacking, for a time at least.

He does seem a bit better with the pepcid/onda combo today, as far as less lip smacking, but the only eating about half his meals and sleeping a lot. He was hanging out more this am before his dose. He's obviously not comfortable yet less than 150 I'd say. Plus if his dose is still too high. I'll give my vet a call about getting some cernia pills. If I have to order online probably would take a week to get here.

So, I'm a bit mad/sad/angry/frustrated now. Back when Rufus had his dental done, they did an ultrasound too. When I picked him up, the tech and I discussed his dental and then she she nothing abnormal on the ultrasound and that we'd get a report in a day or 2. Well my regular vet pushed me on to the specialsit before this, and she was on vacation, but I never received a report. Went to a follow up on dental a week later and the dental specialist noted some gi issues and I said yeah, I knew he has allergies/intolerance. I told her that I never received a report but the tech said they found nothing abnormal. I noted his nausea and she it was probably just the sutchers(?). Anyways, I go to my reg vet today to get cerenia. I asked if she saw a report from ultrasound. She looked in her comp and printed it out. I don't think she looked at it before now. So the report has some things that were never told to me. Granted, at the time we we're trying to get Rufus down in BG numbers as our main concern, and we have a follow up next week. But I am upset now that for 2 and a half weeks nothing would have been told to me unless I asked today. During my discussion originally with the specialsit I told her I had a feeling he has IBD and would be concerned if it came back showing that because who knows at that point if it's IBD or lymphoma. She said she could usually find some markings that could distinguish the 2. I said good, because a bioposy seems like not a good idea right now.

So anyways, the report says "conclusions: Apperance of the small intestine concerning for IBD or inflitrate, such as lymphoma." WTH??? Why did she not call me that day or tell the tech to tell me or call the next day? Wouldn't we want to start treating it immedietly? I am so upset. Of course she is now gone for the day, but will call tomorrow. Ugh.

Dosing for Cerenia injectible is not the same as for the pills. Check with your vet on dosing.
The treatments for IBD and SCL (small cell lymphoma) are different. Neko had either extreme IBD or lymphome. Because of her heart, we could not do either an endoscopy or biopsy because they require anesthesia. Those are the gold standards for determining which you are dealing with. So we assumed SCL, but that unfortunately meant giving chemo. I'd rather not have treated with chemo if it was just IBD. Small cell is slow growing, you don't need to rush to get started treatment. Know what you are dealing with first. Treatment for IBD starts with novel proteins and probiotics. Food doesn't make a difference for SCL. What you might look at doing is getting the Texas GI panel done. The B12 and folate numbers can be indicators. If his B12 is low, you can supplement to make him feel better.

He's been on a probiotic since late last year. Hopefully it's a good one. I've known he's needed a novel protein for the last year, and he was on 1 until everything fell apart last August. I'm inclined to believe it hopefully is IBD and that getting him back on the novel diet will help. But it's all a catch 22, can't get him to eat what he needs to eat to fell better. Just wants this Fancy Feast crap. And for the last 3 or 4 days he only eats about half. I think I worote this, but she had told me prior to the ultrasound that there were some markings that she could possibly see if determing ibd vs lymohoma. This really baffles me as to why she hasn't told me anything about this. Maybe because she's not too worried since she knows he has a food intolernce that it must be ibd? I don't know. 1 step forward, 1 step back lately. It's just weird that he hardly has any of the "big" symptoms anymore. Maybe his insides aren't as imflammed as they were. Thanks for the info Wendy :)

Which probiotic is he on? He will be needing less food now that he's not in high numbers. How much is Rufus eating in total now?

Before he was eating 300 to 350 calories, now harder to say with eating a little more dry food, but yesterday and today id say 200 maybe. Definitely not enough, although all he does is sleep. I really think he's depressed if a cat can be. I suppose I would be too, if I was that neasous all the time.

How much does he weigh now? Neko was around 14 lbs and did fine on around 200 calories a day when she was regulated.

Visbiome is a probiotic specifically for IBD. You don't need to get a pet specific one. Some people use Renew Ultimate probiotics.

He weighs 21.8 pounds. I'd like him to lose about 4 pounds. So it's ok when he's not too hungry sometimes, but I know something else is up.

What do you think about the probiotic he's on now? Think I need to switch?
