Smokey is working hard to earn his OTJ status. We had a couple days with micro-dose support but he’s mostly hanging in there on his own now. I’m excited for him! But fear this may be short lived. We move from Japan to Hawaii next month, so he will spend approx 18-20 hours in a travel kennel. Then when we get there I have 2 options. He can stay at the quarantine facility for 5 days, where they have vet techs and caretakers that are supposed to monitor them and I can visit. The area is 5 x 10 feet with cat walks and a covered area. Or, I had him registered to spend the quarantine at a 24 hour vet clinic boarding facility where he would have quicker access to care of something goes wrong, but it would be in a small stacked cage type boarding area. So my dilemma is do I put him where there’s less chance of him being too stressed out but maybe he won’t be monitored as close, or put him where he will be monitored more closely but not as comfortable which could actually make his glucose rise higher?
Just looking for opinions here. The situation is obviously unavoidable it’s just a matter of choosing the best option for his comfort and safety.

In my humble opinion, they both will be stressful. I would think 5 days of stress is so much harder on bg than a short period of time. I would take the 24 hr over 5 days anytime. I know it will be a hectic time but I would think being close to you sooner would help. Moving is difficult... good luck & God bless!

Oh sorry no, he has to quarantine for 5 days. The choice is the quarantine facility, or a boarding facility at a vet that’s open 24 hours/ day. He has to stay for 5 days at one of them, there’s no way to get around it. I just don’t know if I should put him at the vet since I’m sure his glucose levels will rise and they can take care of monitoring that, and checking for ketones or anything that comes up. It’s a small cage at the vet’s boarding. The actual quarantine facility is a huge 5x10 feet enclosure but they have normal operating hours and he might not be watched as closely. More comfortable though.

If Smokey is OTJ when you move, I’d opt for the quarantine place. You can visit and check his BG and get him vet help if they skyrocket. If on the other hand, he is on insulin I’d go for the 24 hr clinic. I would not want may cat on insulin and no one there overnight to monitor, especially since it could be stress induced numbers and they could go down suddenly if he relaxes some.

I think this is what I’m leaning more towards. If he’s more comfortable maybe he won’t even need the vet. It’s just scary knowing he won’t be watched after hours there.

Sorry I so misunderstood! Yes hard decision but I agree with Sharon! I’d really want someone watching to make sure all goes well if medication is needed.

I'd go for the most roomy option, too!
