Our poor baby is back at the ED vet tonight with high ketones. She only got home three days ago after having her third ED vet stay. Shes just chsnged to Caninsulin as lantus isn’t going well. Seems to have inflammation going on in her pancreas and bowel last few visits so possible pancreatitis. Not sure if this is stopping her BGs from
Stabilising. We are going to change her diet to a low allergy one. We’ve asked the vet about whether we can get her back on antibiotics as she seems to improve when on them. Does anyone else have experience with antibiotics helping with inflammation? I know in humans they treat pancreatitis with antibiotics but they don’t seem to with cats????

Sorry to hear she’s back in the hospital! Have they tested for pancreatitis?

Sorry to hear he's not well sending you :bighug::bighug::bighug:

And yes infection and inflammation (pretty much everything that affects his health) can have an effect on BG

In humans antibiotics can weaken the immune system. There's a lot of what ifs in that equation and obviously depends on previous medical conditions. Going without antibiotics at a vets advice is not something I would recommend.

Yes they tested and the blood test wS negative but all her symptoms point to that including inflammation seen on the ultrasounds she had.

We have actually asked for her to be put on antibiotics for a few weeks as she seems to pick up when she is on them.

With Jones' IBD and pancreatitis - he is on metronidazole (AB) for inflammation and diarrhea.

yes the vet mentioned that medication if the other antibiotic doesn’t help. But they said that metronidazole is very bitter tasting for cats but I am happy to give it if it works better! They want us to merge her onto the low allergy diet and give her an appetite stimulant that they say also helps anxiety and nausea so will be helpful. Maintaining the 1 unit morning and night of the new insulin... Caninsulin and basically see how she goes. We are crossing fingers and paws she stays well and we start to get some control of her BGs.

I put all his meds into size 3 pill capsules. I am not giving 3-4 pills but 2 capsules. So he doesn't get to taste them.

My cat is on antibiotic ClinDrops (clindamycin hydrochloride liquid) for an infected tooth and he loves the taste. Not sure if this antibiotic would work for your kitty, this one is used for wounds or infections. I was just surprised how much he likes the taste and opened up his appetite as opposed to most antibiotics.

I am surprised he loves the taste clindamycin tastes terrible. When I used it the vet instructions said to keep in fridge and add some artificial sweetener to help make it more palatable.

This version made by Henry Schein (Animal Health) says it's a palatable liquid. I looked it up because I was wondering why he liked it so much.

My quote came from a nurse in an ICU, not a doctor. It was also a twenty second conversation at 3AM for whatever that's worth. The whole idea is based on too many what-ifs, type and dose of antibiotic and current health problems. In other words what I said was borderline gibberish. Best of luck with your kitty. :bighug:

She’s back at the vet again for at least the day with high ketones going to give her fluids and some short acting insulin to get herBGs down while the new dose of 1.5 Caninsulin takes effect. Apparently her test results did indicate pancreatitis going on when she was in there. Her ketones were 1.8 when I took her in just for subcut fluids but several hours later her ketones were 3.7 s

Update: Willow is home and her glucose levels are down and her ketones are better. I’ve had a lesson in giving subcut fluids and also have some short acting insulin if needed as they got her levels down using the short acting one today. Hoping she will have a nice settled night. All those well wishes must have helped!
