No shot. If nothing else it will drain the depot and give me a bit of breathing room.

Refusing all food. Will NOT eat. Gave him Mirtz and Zantac at shot time.

I hope the labs show something and gives us a hint on what is going on.

I would have skipped today also in lieu of him refusing food. Oh, Lizzie, I know how upsetting this is. I do hope you get some answer ASAP. When Bubba would refuse his 1 tbsp. of YA a day, I knew I he was in trouble.

Gizmo will get back on track from the fur shot, don't worry, it was a good call. Sorry he is still not eating right for you. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

When are you supposed to get lab results? Sending vines for answers from the lab and an appetite for Gizmo.

Labs back. Don't have a copy (yet - they are emailing). He has a severe infection somewhere - wbc is 28,000+ Will start antibiotics tonight and will give for a full month. Going with Veraflox. I have felt for a very long time (3+ months) that there was an underlying infection - every time he was on antibiotics for a week - he got better for a bit and then would back-slid into not feeling good.

Bun down (not much, but still down)
Cret down (again, not much but still down)
Hematocrit is NORMAL!! 33% (from memory).
Phos down to 5.4 (from 7.3) - not great - but down!
Potassium still 3.1 (working on it as best I can)

She said should start to see improvement in appy in 48 hours (please, please, please)!!

Not sure anyone else would consider this GREAT news - but I do!! :bighug::):D:smuggrin:

    Very pleased to hear this.

The hematocrit worries me, however - her RBCs should not be escalating this fast. Very good that you skipped the epogen for a while. If you do return to it, you might want to give less of a dose, like a lot less.

    That said, what terrific news!!!!!!!!!

I tend to consider infections good news, because hey, antibiotics!

Sending vines for appy and infection.

I also suspect Quintus of having some low-level infection going on (or at least in the past), each convenia shot would really perk him up.

Vet suspects it may be ?exaggerated a bit due to dehydration. We are going to give the Epogen a break until after the AB are finished and will redo labs.

That was exactly the case. 11/2017 he was put on 1 week AB - got better, 02/2017 - another week of AB - got better. I told vet (all three/different) - that I suspected an infection of some sort (Kidney) and they just kept running urinalysis with neg results and cultures with NO growth (not unusual as I understand). Current vet suspect that I may be correct or it may be a pancreas infection but the other lab #'s don't really indicate that it is in the pancreas (but neither do they indicate kidneys). We are doing a month of AB this time.

Looks like great news to me! I'm so happy you got an answer.
Looks like Yum and Gizmo will be doing antibiotics together.
Yum's hematocrit is low, I hope because she is over hydrated. The inverse of Gizmo.

Such great news! We are all applauding infections on this board recently, but hey, it's very much the lesser of 2 evils and highly treatable, unlike the alternative. I hope the longer course of antibiotics does the trick and appy is back very soon. Sending fast working antibiotic vines! You must be so relieved, Lizzie! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Good news! If he does well on the antibiotic (no diarrhea, vomiting, etc.) then consider going 6 weeks. I understand some bad infections require at least that long, and he may have built up a bit of resistance because of the recent short courses of antibiotics.

Need advise on what dose to give him. He is not eating at all. I will force feed tonight but worried about tomorrow if he hasn't started eating again.

Hopefully Gizmo will eat for you by the morning. Maybe you can try a 0.25 unit dose in the morning just to get some insulin in him, unless he is really low. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Ok, then I will call the 153 his PMBG - off to get his AB.

Thanks Carla. I think it is a good call (reluctantly). I know he doesn't feel good. I am exhausted and we will get back on track once he starts eating.

Well, that could be, given the dehydration. Probably Gizmo does need the epogen, it's just a lot safer to raise his hematocrit very, very slowly. The frequency of blood clots escalate in line with the speed at which the RBCs climb.

Putting all that aside, what wonderful news it is that Gizmo's infection is being treated. I'm actually thrilled. :woot::woot:

IDK , 153 is not really that bad of a number considering all going on with the poor fella. I like the no shot call and paws crossed on vines that his appy picks up.

Tried to get him to eat and he is hungry but would lip lick and sniff at it and wouldn't eat. So I gave him Cerenia, Ondansteron and his BP meds and waited 30 min and offered him several diff foods - he finally ate about a tablespoon of the a/d and then gave him another 20 min or so and tried it again and he ate a bit more.

Need opinions... I want to leave food out overnight (free-feed), this could impact his BG for AM - but feel it is more important to get him eating. I left food out this morning (all day while at work) and he only ate a tiny bit early this morning. Agree? Disagree? Advice?

What should I shoot in the AM? No one will be around so I need to get input tonight. If over 200 shoot 0.5U if he eats overnight? If under 200 shoot 0.25U if he eats overnight? If still not eating???

Are you giving probiotics? Gizmo normally does very well on AB with no real adverse affect. But I may give him some once I get him eating again.

I know. I was hoping it wouldn't be quite that high but it is what it is. He is pretty weak but I'll get him back hopefully.

He is eating again right now! Yay :D I absolutely hate to force feed him and he feels the same way :cat:

It is more important that he eats so I don't see a problem with leaving food out.

It's a tough call. Your plan sounds fine but if it were me and couldn't monitor I'd go ahead and reduce the dose to .25u. The .5u might be fine since clearly the .75u depot is gone. I'm more of a cautious one when monitoring is not an option.

Lots of feel better and appy vines for Gizmo :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Lizzie, heaps more vines vines and more vines for you and Gizmo.

A thought about fuds and appy, all things considered... and at risk of sounding like a LS fanatic....but didn’t Gizmo perk up a bit with Liver Shake during an earlier bout? Might be worth trying to offer it again in addition to his other fuds, whether you assist feed or dish feed. Just a thought. ❤️❤️❤️

@MJW : maybe something to consider for Yum, too?

I did try the LS. The days are running together but I got him to eat two cubes somewhere in all this mess. I had taken two out this morning and let them melt in the fridge during the day and offered those to him tonight before "shot" time. I put the bowl in some warm water to bring the LS to warm. He would be interested but wouldn't eat it.

@MJW I second this. Give it a try. Inexpensive and it really did perk Gizmo up. I will keep trying over the next few days.

How is the ketone testing going? Lack of or too little insulin, plus infection can be a bad combination. See how he does overnight. I expect he'll go up as the depot depletes, but I would give some insulin.

Glad you've finally got a diagnosis and can take action.

I hadn't heard of this. Thanks. Raw is supposedly forbidden while she is on antibiotics. I could substitute cooked egg yolk? Vegetarian here: so can I buy chicken livers in a package? I cooked her radcat raw and she has already stopped wolfing it down. She wasn't wolfing the 17% carb canned food she was eating at the ICU either. She is going wild for fortiflora. I need to start her insulin again tomorrow. She is stuck in the 200's.
Hey Gizmo! If you eat it maybe Yum will eat it!

Probiotics can interfere with the action of the antibiotics. I think it's a question of giving the probiotics enough time before and after the antibiotics. Personally, I'd wait until the infection's gone, and then use pro-biotics to replenish the intestine's flora and fauna.
