    Hi!

Anyone got any recommendations for arthritis meds? I've been giving Rufus Cosequin for almost 2 years, and it did well in the beginning, but hasn't worked as much since his DX with FD. I thought he'd start jumping more once regulated and with his Zobabline but not so much. Also, the vet thinks it's a good idea to stop the Cosequin because of other issues. My current vet and old vet will NOT give Adequan. My specialist (IM) will ask her colleagues, but unsure. Any other supplements or meds? Hopefully not fish related.

    thanks!

Why won't your vet give the adequan? Bupe is what we use for arthritis on Phoebe and she gets gabapentin for her IBD. But it also helps with inflammation. You can give the adequan yourself. At home. If you decide to. It has worked wonders for alot of pets.

I honestly have no idea why. Current vet likes to say no to everything. Old vet is cats only, and sounds like she hasn't heard much about it before. I'm guessing because it's mainly for dogs? Hoping the specialist will find a way to get me some or find someone to do the treatments.

Does Phoebe have confirmed ibd? Does she take any steroids for it?

My cat does fantastic on adequan. She hasn't been this playful in over a year. Keep pushing for it.

In the meantime dasuquin is basically cosequine with a little extra. Try that until you get someone to write you the script for adequan

Thanks Janet. I don't think dasuquin will be acceptable right now, either. Getting conflicting reports on if the shellfish used to make this would cause skin issues. Still hoping the specialist finds someone to do the adequan.

There really needs to be more that we can do for our arthritic kitties to help ease their pain & inflammation.

Merry, my sugar baby, is on Cosequin but he hasn't been on it long enough to tell if it's helping or not. My non-Diabetic kitties who are arthritic are on Cosequin & Gabapentin but that doesn't cut it for one of them & he needs more pain relief so I have to decide what else to do for him. Adding in Omega 3s can help with inflammation so I'm going to try giving them all fish oil again. I used to add it to everyone's food but the cats can be so picky that I stopped adding it to their food but they really do need it so I'm trying again. Green Lipped Mussel is good as well and so is Krill Oil (those might be good options for you that are not fish). You can buy any of those in a human health food store or online from stores like iHerb.

Thing is is that I'm trying to find something without fish, which is where most of these things come from. I think I am really going to have to push for the adequan.

Look into the Green Lipped Mussel and also Krill Oil, many can tolerate those who cannot tolerate fish. One of my dogs couldn't have glucosamine because of the shell fish but she did great on Green Lipped Mussel.

To if there is possible allergies to fish, the krill oil would be ok?

It's possible but it's one of those things that you have to try to know for sure. Some do well on it when they can't have fish. The same with the Green Lipped Mussel. But, if it's a "sea food" allergy as opposed to a "fish" allergy than I probably wouldn't try them.

Problem is we are at a point that everything needs to be, out then brought back in to see what he is having issues with. Need to be a novel protein and I worry about these. Think I'm just gonna have to use gabapentin and hope for adequan soon. Thanks for your help :)

Yes phoebe is IBD, we use steroid when it gets bad, but have not had to use as of late. She also has Pancreatitis. We used adequan, for awhile, but there was no "noticable" improvement. But not sure if it was because the med was expiring and weak. There are a bunch of people who use it with great improvements. Definitely fight for it. It can be given subq, at home without having to be injected IM.

Can I ask about the IBD. We're at a stage, wondering what to do. He has mild thickening, has not had any other tests beside ultrasound. He has no classic signs of IBD, very rarely throws up, no diareaha. But he is constantly nauseous. Do you encounter that? Even with cerenia and ondan he still is fussy, and I can't get him to eat a novel protein. Does the steriods help with calming the inflammation which in turn would help the nauseua do you think?

I've heard curcumin can help with some of the inflamation as it is a natural anti inflamatory. It's also an immunity booster. Have you tried it?

Never heard of that. I'm going to visit my old vet today, to get some food samples. I'll ask her about this. I did a quick google and found this: https://www.amazon.com/Mercola-Curcumin-Pets-Microactive-Supplements/dp/B00QWECZ2Y

    thanks for the info :)

I got it because I figured it couldn't hurt to give to CC for her arthritis, and to my cat Julie who has a fickle belly (I suspect IBS). I thought it might help my feral colony keep their immune systems up outside where they are exposed to illnesses and colds. can't hurt to try.

Phoebe with the pancreatitis stays nauseous, so hard to know which one is doing it. Has he had a panc test? Maybe pain more than nausea? The steroid do help with the inflammation, but we are using steroids as a last resort because of bg. But ECID, Rufus might need the steroids, but if he is only showing signs of nausea maybe a more aggressive approach to the cerenia and zofran. Phoebe takes both every day. If we skip cerenia we get puking. The gabapentin for inflammation and pain made her sleepy in the beginning, but now it doesnt. And it definitely helps her.

Nevermind saw the panc in your sig. That maybe causing more issues than the IBD.

Well, I do need to change the sig, maybe. Panc test in Novemeber was positive. Ultrasound for 2 weeks ago came back "not noted", and she wrote if he did have pac it would be very mild. So I don't know what is going on. I did visit old vet and they have gabapentin in tablet form, so I'm going to give those to him and see if it helps.

I think he is a bit backed up. Ever since mainly wet diet, he now goes every other day. He was on pepcid all last week and I notice when he is on that he does get a bit constipated and harder stools. He started going out of the box again and smaller pieces. Last next all he went in 2 days was about 1.5" long, but it wan't hard. So he prob is backed up. I gave him some miralax this Afternoon, so we'll see where that goes.

Hopefully that will help, we use organic pumpkin. 1/8 of a tsp once or 2x a day. It helps with loose and firm stools.
