Last does was 5:30am this morning - then came home 4:30pm to feed and dose but tested first.. tested out 96! So fed but did not dose. Then vet wanted me to test 9pm but tired - tested 8:15pm and 424 - I trust that reading more than the 96 I must have done something wrong earlier - I did get a bit more blood this time... :( it’s like she ate and then her blood sugar skyrocketed I don’t understand

It's still early in the whole process, as time goes on the numbers will be closet together.

Don't be depressed! Rufus had higher numbers for over 3 months, it'll get better! I know it's hard, you want your baby to get better but it takes time :)

what was the number before the 96? If you get a number that doesn't seem right, you could try again in 10 mins.

That is a big jump in numbers. I would think 1 of the tests was wrong, but not sure which one or why.

Unfortunately, kitties can and do rise that much. Once you get a spreadsheet, make sure you post in the Prozinc group to get some help with all of this. Hang in there - you and Maji are going to get through this! :bighug:

not necessary your fault! probably just a bad strip or blood drop. i get bad strip readings from time to time, if number seems off to me, i retest with another strip.

I’ve tested twice -even 3 times or waited 10 minutes & checked again. If it seems off to you it’s worth another check. But I know you’re just getting started so be patient with yourself. It is depressing at first & it is stressful. You are not alone & please know that it gets easier! :bighug:
It’ll always be up & down somewhat as this is the nature of the beast! That’s why it’s called a sugar dance. I finally got that! Lol

Sounds like the tests were @4 hours apart, so very well could both be accurate. Maji may be bouncing from the low 96, +she ate, and maybe the prozinc shot finally wore out. This is why we recommend a midcycle test when possible. A cat can have a high preshot and drop low when they hit nadir, then bounce back up high. Did you give a shot? Remember to give the next one @12 hours after that one.

It’s quite possible that his BG rebounded high after that low number earlier. We call it bouncing- common and frustrating. Djamila mentioned posting on the ProZinc forum. I think that’s a good idea.

Oh, believe me, the numbers can do all kinds of things!!! The more testing data you get, the more you will be able to see patterns, but even then, do not expect that it will always make sense.

Ok guys... I will begin after this posting on the Prozinc but tested Maji this morning...and she wasn’t as docile about it as I would like but she put up with it...”I will get better at this Maji ~ I promise...”

Her results this morning came in at 205.

I don’t know much but it seems like after she eats even low carb food 2 hourish later her glucose soars
...perhaps this is why it’s recommended that feeding 4 x per day... reduces the yo-yo effect of insulin sugar dance? Is it possible diabetic cats have a overreaction to glucose and eventually with age this dramatic high-highs and low-lows exhausts the body’s pancreas, liver etc and the body just quits reacting? Hence reduction in the ability to absorb sugar? Maji will GORGE if given half a chance literally I feel she would eat herself to death...is that part of the problem cycle and yo-yo effect exhausting her pancreas with age?

Dunno... gotta drink some coffee...so I can start spreadsheet...

BTW she also loves the KIWIpeak New Zealand mackerel & lamb air dried bits... perhaps more than the beef...

A food spike in BG at +2 is quite common. The insulin hasn't kicked in yet and her bloodstream is carrying glucose from her meal. It's the interplay between level of pancreas function, time of onset of insulin and carbs from food. Insulin is a hormone that influences many physiological processes and kitty's responses to it can be variable day to day and moment to moment within one cycle. By following the testing routine we recommend you're "dipping in" to her system and assessing the glucose-insulin interplay at a moment in time. Enough of those moments captured at various times over many cycles builds up a picture on your spreadsheet that allows you to see her typical response patterns. It's a dynamic, not a static, process and will change over time. That can take a while for a care giver to grasp and come to terms with.

A kitty's pancreas can also work a little off and on and if it's sputtering at a point in time right after a meal, you might see a drop in BG because the pancreas has released some insulin itself. Really complex processes here!

Well what HAD happened was it had been 12 hours... since last insulin shot and I tested she was ‘apparently at that point’ 96 but I there may be user error in that dunno. Anyway so I feed 5pm and DON’T give shot then roughly 2 hours later I test expecting a rise and Maji soared to 424 ! I was shocked and depressed, so I fed again as I had divided her food in half and gave shot 8:15pm

Now no food it’s morning it’s roughly 10 hours later and now she’s at 205. I haven’t fed yet

@Kris & Teasel - I truly believe you are the cat diabetes whisperer- @Djamila too! I’m sorry I threw my fit last week- it really was not about you at all! I always feel sorry forBaby that she runs, hides etc... I took that out on you & I hope you can forgive me! :banghead::banghead: Other personal things going on at home too; but that was so wrong of me to be witchy to you! Please forgive me!! No excuse for that! You could both teach classes to the vets. I wish they knew these things or at least wanted to learn! Have a great day today all!

thank you especially after the 424 ! That nearly scared the beejeez out of me...

One question I was gonna post as a new post but easier at this point here...as I will be writing in on the Prozinc one.

here goes: How often are you all testing (with the glucose meter) per day?

I was fascinated with all the spreadsheets - does your cat ever get fed up with all the poking?

I try to test at least 4x/day. 2 preshots and right before I leave in the AM, and one before bed. Of course if he looks like he’s going low I test more.

Rufus has been lower the last few weeks, so I try testing more often. If he gets below 70 I'll test more. Right now about 5 a day? I'd probablt test more if the strips were less expensive!

You know sometimes it takes like 1o pricks to get a drop of blood from him! When it takes that many times, sometimes he gets up and walks away. Overall I don't think he cares anymore, he's used to it!

thank you!! I have to hold her on my lap like a baby butt curled under because if I tried to do it while she is laying down somewhere...she would just leave...so I have to hold her. Wish I had 3 hands.

She was none too impressed this morning with the test...I even gave her a treat while she was sitting that way course she ate that...even in that position. She wasn't too bad...I'm hoping I get better at it...
With black ears it's hard to see the blood I may try the underside although she glues those firmly down now...while I am holding her.

anyway THANK YOU! It's really interesting...

You give me hope! She wasn't bad...but she didn't leave those ears sticking up the way she did the night before... LOL

I even used a teeny tiny .33 lancet...too...but she loves the treats after...

I hope my testing with Maji will be like Colin's!!!

    HI Bellasmom,
Doing o.k., could not get a successful amps test and did not want to push Maj beyond her patience level with me. I discovered a couple o' things:
    a) I need coffee before attempting to do this in the early morning hours that she wakes me up for feedings. She licks my hands and my arms and my forehead...very insistent.
    b) I need more light in the morning...DEFINITELY need more light...or are my eyes getting bad. Definitely need more light in a different spot.
    c) Need to be quicker...efficient...this fiddling around and multiple pokings...ain't cutting it. I need to get good at it...quickly!
    d) I need to revamp this process and need maji to make a positive association to this process...so have been doing test runs with no poke but the sitting and handling her ears...she is skeptical...but eats any treat I provide...in any position I put her in...

I'm gonna do a practice session again tonight...I am so tempted to prick but I may hold off. Since Maj is so new to this...and I am pretty darn sure with our 1 u and her high glucose readings especially around 5-6pm, I'm pretty safe at the moment....I think...I hope

Tomorrow morning I gotta get a read on this thing...as the morning is her lowest. I have bought two cans of her favorite HIGH CARB wet foods in case of a hypo emergency.
These are FF medleys salmon Florentine with garden greens in a delicate sauce and then a FF salmon grilled gravy lovers. She used to love those a long time ago...

that's the status...I wish I was good at the testing...I will get better and quicker

No - I had not...but I will definitely think about it! She uses her front paws like hands...reach up and touching my face, spreading her pads wide like a hand...and wrapping her hands and arms around my arms sometimes...so I would be afraid on the front ones...

the back ones...she is not so special about...hmmm....I will look up the process...I have only watched the ears ones...

Ok I practiced a bit with ears ... still really apprehensive... but I could do anything with hind paws! I may try that instead ...

UPDATE I did it with the hind paw omg so much easier for me - she wasn’t that pleased but she did not give me problems and I can improve my technique AND I can use the itty bitty 33 gauge!!

You’re a genius Bellasmom! I would have never considered the paw!!! I did the side of one of the toes just before the pad of the paw

First time it came in 26... but I KNEW better now and retested then it came in 210 !

Thank you SO MUCH for the suggestion - I would not have even thought about it!!!

When I joined this group bella was on 4u am 4u pm, we started all over from the beginning and kris had suggested it was probably to much and we started at 1 and worked from there, she has been a Godsend for Bella and I, your numbers look great compared to what Bella’s has been being, I’m just in shock on how much better they are getting, I have pulled my hair out, cried, thought I was going insane and it’s so much better now and I can relax a little, I enjoyed tried every food there is, researched, read and read and read always trying to figure out what is best for Bella I sm so very very thankful for the people on here, kris and other people have done so much for him
