Oh boy, +6 is 94. Should I worry? Feed carbs?

That's a nice green number. You can feed some usual food and test again in 30 minutes to see which way your kritter is headed.

I'm just freaking out a bit because he has never had a green number.

Congratulations on his first high green. (The take action number is 50 on a human glucometre.) It means you are getting close to the proper dosage.

Because he is not used to "green," he may bounce.

    From the stickie:
Bouncing - Bouncing is simply a natural reaction to what the cat's system perceives as a BG value that is "too low". "Too low" is relative. If a cat is used to BGs in the 200's, 300's, or higher for a long time, then even a BG that drops to 150 can trigger a "bounce". Bouncing can also be triggered if the blood glucose drops too low and/or too fast. The pancreas, then the liver, release glucogon, glycogen and counter-regulatory hormones. The end result is a dumping of "sugar" into the bloodstream to save the cat from going hypoglycemic from a perceived low. The action is often referred to as "liver panic" or "panicky liver". *Usually*, a bounce will clear kitty's system within 3 days (6 cycles).

So, I just tested him again at 6.5 and he is at 86. I don't panic and break out the hypo kit until 50?

No need to panic. Feed him a decent snack of low carb food and test again in 30 minutes (just to see if he's reached nadir and starting to go back up, or if he is continuing to go down).

Make notes of what you are feeding, how much, and when. This information will help you determine how your cat reacts to food and determines what measures you would need to take in similar situations.

These numbers are below the renal threshold, which means that the kidneys are not having to work as hard to help get rid of the excess glucose. Commonly referred to as "healing numbers."

88 @ +7. Finished a Sheba portion (1.3oz) about ten minutes before test. I feel a bit ridiculous freaking out over Diamond finally having the BG numbers we’ve been striving for. I didn’t expect him to drop so fast.
So, this would be considered a bounce? I probably shouldn’t expect his numbers to remain in green for the long term?
I feel like an idiot when it comes to this. Ask me about cat behavior, fleas, ticks, broken limbs, grooming, I even have a fairly good grip on diet. But understanding The ups and downs of BG numbers and what to expect has me stumped thus far. I’m grateful for the experienced help here!

Glad that Diamond is surfing the greens. I'd test again in an hour (or 30 minutes if you just can't wait).

It is a bit scary the first few times. Fast drops need to be watched. You have been great today.

Bounces refer to going very high after a lower than usual number. A bounce can last for up to 3 days. The green will come back.

I'm going out to shovel snow now. Holler for help if you need to. Someone will answer.

Good catch on the greens today. :D And yes, the resulting bounce means you get a good sleep tonight.
