I will start watching Rufus too :)

WOW Rufus had a low nadir just like Maji did...

We’re kinda in sync here :bighug:

It's very scary! Rufus will be starting some new meds soon, hopefully they work and won't raise his BG. If they don't work we might have to go on steroids which will raise his BG. I'd love for him to go into remission, but the other issues are more important I think.

    Good luck and go Maj!!

I will be joining you guys starting tomorrow Tuesday.

Maji has completed the two weeks and the vet will get the spreadsheet and then she has a dental cleaning.

I can't wait for a regular morning...where she wakes me up and licks my forehead to get me up to feed her.

Keeping her on a strict diet and testing once per day, perhaps skip occasionally but I definitely don't want to leave it and have her glucose creep up.

I even bought a freestyle meter and strips for hubby and I to test our blood.

    Thank you!!!

she's a lot slimmer now than when she was diagnosed. I have to keep her on a diet...otherwise she overeats, gains a lot of weight and goes into diabetes. Now on top of it...I can't give her any high carbo food of any type...she can only have low very low carb food.

all wet food of course...hence we will have to go for dental cleanings probably once per year...

It's going to be a challenge in my house. Rufus is eating dry food again. His numbers aren't going too high though so that's good. I'll probably check his numbers once a day to make sure everything is ok!

How do you guys check BG once a day?
When do you do that to have any idea that they are good?
Isn't it like throwing a dart at the wall? IOW a good number doesn't mean he doesn't spike way higher an hour later, or 2 hours earlier?

I am kicking myself for not testing Meow this past year unless I noticed an issue.... but would it really have told me anything valuable to have one number once a day?

I plan on testing at different times. I think once a day is suffecient. It's all about data. If the one test is normal, great. If it's high, then I'm testing again tomorrow still. If it goes back to normal, then I know it was a food spike or stress or whatever. If it stays high then I'll know something is up.

Well I was doing twice a day just like I did when she was on insulin, testing right before feeding and then insulin (then we stopped insulin). But now that she has crossed the threshold of remission - I’m going to test maximum once per day I may skip a day or not, but I’m goung to do it like I had been - before feeding either morning or night....probably evening when I get home from work.

But I may skip a day here and there IF she’s pretty static as she has been- if I get a high one I will test the next day or morning to make sure her body regulated it down... I don’t want her slowly getting higher And higher I’d rather catch it fast

It's hard at the begining, is kind of scary not to test but I realized that it was really not that necesary except for my own peace of mind so I started testing first once a day and later every other day now I'm testing more o less once a week or if he's acting strange or if he has an infection ( then I test a lot more ) , so I guess if I get an slightly high number I'll start testing a lot more often, I try to test at the same times I usually tested that way at least I can kind of compare against the old data

I had my own issues yesterday. AM & PM tests were ok, but the tests in the middle were high. If I didn't test I would not have known that he got in the 200's. And I still can't get an answer as to if that is acceptable. It's a little high for my taste, but if he drops back into normal numbers is it ok then?

I’m no expert but if food is digested and glucose in the food enters the blood stream, and then the body releases insulin through the pancreas to guide the nutrition to the cells bringing the glucose level down - isn’t it kinda the same thing?

However with insulin artificially replacing natural insulin released by the body - we are in effect doing the same thing but it would work different (in the opposite way) right?

Would not the natural way be the body’s rise in glucose triggers a reaction from the pancreas to release more insulin to handle the load - if you will and then the body adjusts the glucose level downward? In the artificial replacement of insulin, we are doing it instead of the pancreas. So we introduce insulin into the body after feeding or when feeding either one of those will trigger a rise in blood glucose countered by the injected insulin. It then does what it’s supposed to do, bringing the glucose level down (providing nutrition and energy to cells) at its lowest point NADIR.

BUT because the artificial replacement of insulin slowly washes out of the body and isn’t continually produced by the pancreas, the glucose level begins to rise again because the body is not able to automatically manage the natural release of insulin. Whereupon once again before or during feeding we artificially introduce insulin to maintain glucose levels just after feeding otherwise it would continue to rise?

Dunno... these are just my thoughts...

I would be happy to be corrected... as I don’t really know it just seemed logical to me...

OK - used antibiotics after her tooth extraction and so did not test blood sugar during this time (giving her antibiotics is harder than testing the ear). Last use of antibiotics this morning.

    Tested ear this evening 118

Formally OTJ - but will test occasionally to make sure we are not going back into diabetes. Tried Ziwipeak wet food the rabbit and lamb and she loves it.

Tested Maji tonight 1 hour early at 5pm AlphaTrak = 92
    FreeStyle lite = 62

I had such a big blood bubble...I just had to test and compare the TWO BG meters! 30 pts apart.

The Feline Natural Chicken and Lamb wet food she just begs for...she loves it and ZiwiPeak. Now the real question is: Is it the food these last two test times? OR is the fact she had a dental and a tooth was pulled?

I would have to go back to FF to really test that hypothesis...

    @Sean & Rufus
How is Rufus doing? I checked SS. You are also on AlphaTrak 2 as we are. I happened to get a Freestyle lite to test my blood and thought why not try Maji’s? I’d compare the two results from same blood drop and there was a 30 pt difference - both monitors are spot on. But it also means (basically) that if we had been using the freestyle Majis numbers woulda looked better. Not knocking using human meters understand totally strip pricing et al, but Rufus looks good I think...

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.ad...s/what-is-normal-blood-glucose-range-pets/amp

    Article stated this:
“chemistry analyzer lists a normal range of 70 to 150 for cats”. This would be based on pet meter of course :)

Did you try the freestlye strip in the alphatrak? That's how I am using them.

Rufus is ok. His numbers are higher then I'd like, but no insulin. We've got some others issues that we are trying to figure out and work on. It's 2 step forward, 1 step back :(

Oh no, I used the AlphaTrak strips in the alphatrak and the freestyle ones in the freestyle. I was trying to assess the differences in measurement of BG

It sounds like you’re making progress tho?

Making progress with the diabetes part, but were still having issues with nausea and trouble with him eating novel diet. We started Atopica, which is a potent drug, but haven't seen results from it yet. I think we getting there, just really slowly :)

Well it’s been a while - Maji is still testing well monthly. The only problem we have had is cystitis - unknown cause. She is now on 1/4 tab of Cerenia daily - if we go off cystitis comes back almost violently so weird. It’s not an infection. The Cerenia cures it in 1 hr.

I took Maji off the feline natural chicken and lamb... while her numbers are below 100 on that with alphatrak I thought perhaps that was causing the cystitis - I think I was mistaken as she gets it on just fancyfeast and non- fish too.

So today I’m gonna begin a transition to raw foods - slowly. I also tried a brand new treat which she is just NUTS about, it’s the VITAL ESSENTIALS, Vital Cat CHICKEN HEARTS. Maji is just in love with these things... begging ,and begging for another chicken heart. I just use a hammer to smash em While they are in the package and then I break it in parts and she is just crazy about these. No carbs as the only ingredient is chicken heart.

I’m going to try a very tiny bit of bone broth which has a bit of veggie with the raw rabbit tonight and will see how that goes ... I would like Maji to not have to take Cerenia every day...

Ok was just gonna write in and say Maji turned up her nose to Rad Cat Raw chicken with a bit of bone broth...I mean she ate all her other foods...and AS I BEGAN TO WRITE IN SHE STARTED EATING IT! Go figure....

She wanted her Raw Rabbit ate all that, then since I had no more defrosted she ate what was left of feline naturals that I had left from yesterday- “seemed full”. Came over to beg for more food and suddenly while I’m typing goes over and starts eating raw chicken...dunno I was ready to take it all back too
