    Good Morning L&L!

Thanks Paula @Love-Paula aka Woodsywife for the thoughts this morning. March 7th was 1yr since my baby Doodles went to the bridge. We miss him so much everyday. I'm always lurking on your precious FD babies and say prayers every night for you all. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

My little man Leo just turned 15 months. He's been battling juvenile gingivitis/ stomatitis since he was 5 months old. We've been to the dental specialist twice and his last visit in January resulted in 8 extractions. Unfortunately just 5 months later he went back yesterday because his gums/ mouth were inflamed/ red where the remaining teeth were and it spread to the back top of his mouth. We decided to go ahead with FME yesterday (full mouth extractions) as it's the only possible cure and a better chance if we just nip it now.

They kept him over night and might be keeping him again tonight. They are currently tube feeding him but will start offering him food and see how he does. I'll be taking his freeze dried raw to them today but he may have to be on canned for a bit. He has poop issues on anything but the freeze dried raw so hoping he can get back on his food quickly. In the meantime S. Boulardi will help keep his stool under control hopefully. I'm also wondering if it might be best to give him canned in order to avoid permanent food aversion to the FD raw since his mouth will be tender for a week or 2....any opinions would be welcome.

Here are a few pics of the cutie-patootie head...weighing in at 15.5lbs! He's a sweet little boy that is very vocal. Civie Moo still hisses at him here and there but generally they co-exist. Leo however just LOVES her....that's part of the problem :p

    Love the cutie-patootie!

Poor baby...hope that FME helps him out. That is just terrible thing to have.

Vines for a swift and rapid recovery.

Not sure on the food...you know Jones, if one tinsy little thing goes wrong he won't touch it again. I would be tempted to give him is FD raw once he is home...back to normal routine. It isn't that hard of a food, maybe some extra water to soften it up a bit more???

Poor sweet baby...so much for him to go through at such a young age, but praying that he will have perfect mouth health for a very, very long time after all this. Prayers for a quick recovery and that he can come home very soon!

I just loovvvve him. Those eyes get me every time. I do hope you can bring him home today.

On the food my thought would be canned, but also offer small really tiny pieces of raw once or twice a day. Maybe even slow cook some raw so it's very tender until he can mange his normal diet.

He's so adorable! I would give Tiki Cat velvet mousse a try. It's very much the consistency of baby food with the added bonus that it's actually a complete cat food with taurine and all that good stuff. Super easy to eat and I'm sure easy to assist feed if necessary.

The freeze dried raw you can also rehydrate and mush it up, very easy to eat. It won't help if he has food aversion issues though. Do you feed a variety of flavors for the raw? Maybe get a flavor he doesn't normally eat just until he feels better? I think Primal makes a chicken and salmon freeze dried raw. Most cats go nuts for anything with fish and I wouldn't normally feed it to mine, but for short time periods and special circumstances like this, might be a good option.

I'm sorry he had to have FME, but I'm sure it will be a relief for both of you that his teeth won't be a problem anymore.

Quick healing vines for sweet Leonardo! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I visited him for about 30 min. Brought his primal FD raw and his bowl but he had no interest. He's completely stoned out of his mind! He was talkative, purring and exploring. They will keep him until he eats on his own. They're giving him AD via tub and paws crossed his bowl and food will get him going. It's less then 24hrs so thinking the anesthesia is also still in his system along with the nerve block shot they gave him. They said he's likely seeing Unicorns at the moment  I'm going to clean, scrub floors etc. to keep busy. Hopefully he'll be home tomorrow.

For you :bighug::bighug::bighug: and for Leo many vines for fast healing. Poor lil guy, so young for this. He does look like he's in a happy place in those pics.

Kitties can do amazingly well with FME's, once their mouth is healed again. Once his mouth no longer hurts, he may be more interested in food than before.

Thanks everyone. Mama bean is sad and he won't be coming home tonight. Vet called and he currently has zero interest in food but my thoughts are that he is really drugged up, too many noises and smells. Their goal is go let him come home tomorrow but they prefer he is eating on his own (as I do). Sigh....my poor little man.

FD will always haunt me with PTSD/ OCD. I sure hope this fixes the kitten but realize the recovery might be a bit rough.

Besides the drugs, he could be nauseous from the anesthesia. He will come around. Let him lead you. FD isn't in the mix here. He'll start eating some tomorrow. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

    Hi Karen,
I'm so sorry poor little Leo has had to have a FME.
My daughter's cat Clover, 8 months at the time, had to have 13 teeth removed because all the back teeth had double teeth, from them budding at the side of the main tooth and had caused infections and inflammation all around her gums.. It resulted in an extremely sore mouth with very red gums. The only teeth she now has are the front ones.
When Amanda brought her home she was still a bit out of it until the next day (she had been overnight at the vet after the op) then very quiet for a few days. She fed her soft canned food and gave pain meds. She gradually started to eat.
Now she is back on her raw diet and manages small chunks of meat well. She refuses to eat any canned food at all.
Sending many feel better vines and eating vines to Leo and many hugs to you:bighug::bighug::bighug:

I hope he eats soon so that you can bring him home. I know my cats never eat at the vet's but it's been a very long time since I've had to leave a cat at the vet's overnight.
Not sure how far you are from the vet but is there any chance you could bring him home for a visit to see if he'll eat?

Ya know, Leo is a pretty sensitive little man. The goal is to bring him home today and expecting a call before noon my time. I really think he'll do better being home at this point too. When I visited him yesterday he was more interested in sniffing everything in the room, climbing on things etc. He doesn't like to be petted or picked up much and so many people are touching him let alone him being in a cage surely doesn't help at this point.

Last update here since this really isn't the place but I'm forever thankful for the L&L family so thanks for letting us post and all your thoughts and prayers.

The boy is home with his feeding tube in place. Looks promising though as he ate 2 Primal nuggets the first hour he was home :woot::woot::joyful::joyful: He's now resting comfortably on daddy's bed. Sure he's so happy NOT to be in a cage :) We'll keep up on his bupe pain meds and keep all paws crossed. Love to you all.

Oh, Karen, I am sooooo sorry I missed all this! Poor sweet Leo. He is just so handsome with or without teeth. I am sending you a bunch of vines for his healing and hope he'll be good as new ASAP. Glad he is eating for you. I understand your concern with food aversion and not wanting him to be off his regular food when he is healed. I think one redeeming quality for him is that he is so stoned that he might not remember what he ate yesterday!

Bubba's first momma who rescued him from his feral fur mom, has a cat with stomatitis and FME and he is just fine and eats like a champ. It is a hard decision to make I am sure , but the right one for Leo's health sake.

Lots of comfort vines coming to you as well. He is a little champ and will bounce back in no time. Hugs. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Leo ate 4 Primal nuggets after he got home at 4:30pm last night :) He did eat 1 for breakfast so far. Attached are the x-rays of his mouth which is only 4.5 months after his last cleaning and 8 extractions. He slept really good with me last night and has been enjoying his window bench this morning bird watching.

Leo is not eating since yesterday morning. I was able to get 20mls of AD in him last night and this morning we're trying a 1/2 dose of bupe since he was sedated all day yesterday. He took a few bites of the primal raw this morning and walked away. After 4 different cans he decided to lick a bit of one of them. I was able to get 35mls of AD down the feeding tube after that although it took me about and hour with stopping, starting etc. They were giving him 35mls 3 times a day in the hospital so worse case that's what I'll try to do until Monday. I don't think it makes sense to bring him to an ER. Maybe he's nauseous from the bupe and clavamox? We'll just keep trying but I think just keeping him home over the weekend, tube feeding and offering food is better then a hospital stay. So many cats go back to eating right away after FME....of course not mine.

Leo, stop worrying your bean and eat something, please.

Unless he becomes lethargic with bupe, I would try giving him a smidge more. If it’s pain, he’s not going to want to eat. If it’s nausea, do you have any cerenia or anything you could give to test that out?

Additionally you could try some store bought kitten milk replacer for the time being, or make your own kitten glop. Yes, it’s for neonates, generally, but it’s also a nice calorie and nutrient dense short term food for convalescing cats. Most cats get excited to drink milk.

Do you think giving him a bit of gravy or chicken broth might peak his interest? Do you have cerenia or something else for nausea?

I was going to say the same thing about nausea Stacy did...clavamox can be very tough for some kitties. One of my civvies had just one dose of it and wouldn't eat for over 24 hours - if he didn't have fur, I'm sure he would have looked green. Maybe get some anti-nausea meds (either cerenia or ondansetron or both) from a vet, just in case??? I don't think it could hurt to give him anti-nausea meds at this point.

    Continuing to pile on prayers...

I spoke to the Dr. and we're going to cut back on the bupe to .05 and give it every 12 hours. He has to be awake in order to eat. He just ate a little NV rabbit wet food and I'll keep offering food throughout the day. My only option is the ER vet until Monday for a shot of cerenia. The Dr. didn't seem overly concerned and we do have an appointment with them on Monday. As long as I can tube feed him to avoid fatty liver and dehydration until then. If need be I'll take him to the ER vet tomorrow for the cerenia but I'd rather not stress him out since we're going Monday.

Just as another option, you can give meds through the tube, so you would be able to get cerenia or ondansetron tablets into him if they'd prescribe it for you without having to take him in. Just a thought. So glad he ate a little bit!

I totally get it! I just found a drastic difference (for Asia) between the oral and the injectable cerenia. I have no idea why, but the night I was stuck with just the oral, it didn’t work, she wasn’t eating and it was the longest night of this journey so far, hands down. :( Also for Asia, she’s really not bothered with shots compared to trying to put anything in her mouth. Pilling her was also the most traumatic part of this journey (for us both, I’m sure). :blackeye:

I hope all of this is a non issue because Leo just decides to be a good boy and eat something by himself. :bighug:

Sending lots of feel better and appy vines for your sweet boy! Mandarin had a full mouth extraction last year and he came home the same day and acted like he hadn't eaten in days. ...and then Walter needed a cleaning with 2 or 3 minor extractions and acted like he was dying for the next few days. You never really know. Some cats just take surgery a lot harder than others and need a few extra days. I am sure that he will feel a lot better though once it's all healed.

My Darwin had FME January 1st (for tooth resorption) so I know the struggle of having to put your kitty through that. Darwin didn't eat for about 24 hours following his procedure. There is light at the end of the tunnel though as Darwin now eats better than he EVER has before! :cat:

I have. He ate great the first night and next morning when he came home. Hardly anything since.

I am glad you posted that. I wasn't sure if it was my imagination but I think the same (shot more effective)

Today is day 5 after the procedure. He loves food so I just don't know. The Dentist and the vet who gave him the cerenia shot yesterday don't seem concerned :banghead:

We are not crazy, I just ran across this yesterday from CKD group, it’s like this one, people helping people and I don’t know the profession of this person, but for what it’s worth:

“Vets tend to prescribe oral cerenia for any cat at 4 mg. Thats the injectable dosage and vets have not yet updated. Its frequently not a theraputic dose. If you find its not working to prevent nausea, and he continues not eating, you may wish to up it to 1 mg per lb.”

Squeaky wheel. I would plead your case. I have such a hard time dragging Gizmo into the heat and stressing him out even more than just the vet visit. Is it the same vet you used with Doodles? Surely they know you are capable of giving a shot (even if it is hubby is going to doing it ;)).

Have you tried the Tiki Velvet Mousse?

Same practice but different vet as it was Saturday. I'll call his vet on Monday and speak with her as she knows me and yes was the only cooperative with Doodles. He also has an apt. with the dentist at 2:30pm tomorrow as we're suppose to take the feeding tube out. He's not easy too tube feed...won't sit still so it takes forever.

    Well that's a good sign!
Try some gravy or chicken broth or tuna water....something he doesn't need to chew but will hopefully wet his appy so that he wants something more solid.

It might help to change your perspective a bit, and I know that’s hard. You went through so much with Doodles, and some of this must be very PTSD for you. :bighug:

He is young, the vet and dentist aren’t very concerned with him not eating much right now. Just think how you or I would feel if we just had all our teeth pulled, eating would probably be low on the list. The concern here, of course, is hepatic lipidosis, but he would have to be not eating at all, anything, for a decent amount of time to kick off that process. It’s good to be aware of it, but it’s a process, just like DKA, there is a formula for it and it doesn’t happen in an instant. I know he will eat, cats heal super fast, especially young ones. He’s got to start feeling normal again and I think getting the tube out will help (is it up the nose)? That would be super annoying, I wouldn’t want to eat and swallow with a tube up my nose and down my throat. Offer him anything and everything and deal with poo consequences later.

And tons more of these, he’s going to be a new cat soon! :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

It's in his neck luckily not in the nose and he could be annoyed with it. I'm trying to stay calm but those who know me realize nothing stresses me more then not eating. I'll be going out in a little bit for a few hours. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Leave him some food down when you leave maybe he will get bored with you not there and eat (I know, probably wishful thinking but worth a try).

The shot of course works faster. The pills take up to 24 hrs to kick in. If you have the pills, crush and dissolve them in warm water, put through tube. Just make sure it's dissolved so tiny piece doesn't get stuck in tube.

I did. Really don't think he likes canned food. He as eaten some but wondering if it's giving him a belly ache. I picked up some Stella & Chewy FD raw and he ate about 6 nuggets. It's the most he's eaten so far.

He got a shot yesterday and hasn't made a lick of a difference so now I'm not convinced he's even nauseous. He did poop this morning so that's good.

Yay for poop!!! Maybe that will help! And Yay for eating 6 nuggets, too...keep doing that, Leo!!

I would wonder if the clavamox could be affecting his appy....just something to discuss with vetty tomorrow.

Also, sometimes ondansetron works better for some kitties than cerenia does, so that could be something else to ask about.

He could just be trying to adjust to his new mouth.

I know that's not much help...we're praying his appy picks up very, very soon.

I have seen the same posted by an IM vet that pops into a small cell group I belong to. Oral dosing is double that of the injectible. And they often don't take the size of the cat into mind.

    Eat Leo!

Tend to agree and think there's only a few doses left...today is day 5. Also think the bupe doesn't agree with him. In January when he had the 8 extractions I stopped to bupe then too for the same reason. He won't let me near the tube and gets mad then hides so that's coming out tomorrow regardless. I'll see what they say tomorrow, maybe add some cypro to the mix? Sure hope he hangs in there and gets back to normal soon.

Ondansetron and Cerenia target different nausea receptors. Sometimes one works better than the other, or you need both.

Stella and chewy has a frozen raw nuggets....Might be an option. Azalea liked the rabbit raw nuggets, sometimes “straight up” sometimes mixed with canned or baby food (and sometimes a tiny amount of raw liver in it or on plate, smorgasbord style) , depended on situation and whatever helped her to eat.
If he is ok with the FD raw maybe rehydrate in water and mush up in blender? Or thaw and add water to the frozen raw nuggets and run through a blender?

Hope Leo feels better soon and heaps of vines ❤️❤️

Leo ate a few more S&C nuggets which are always rehydrated with water. I left wet food out while out this evening and quite a bit was gone and know Moo didn’t eat it all. It’s been 14 hrs since the last bupe dose and he’s acting like Leo so I’m skipping the dose tonight. Hopefully he’ll smack me in the face starting at 4am....never thought I’d miss or hope for that

No face smacking wake up call from Leo but guess who he has trained to wake up anyway  He at 1 Primal nugget mixed with a few S&C this morning. It took a little coaxing but he pretty much finished it. He doing the usual morning bird watching. Once the bupe wore off he was purring, talking and tail in the air. To me, that says he's not in pain. We go to the dentist at 2:30 to get the feeding tube removed. He won't let me near it anyway so it's useless. I'd like to get an appy stimulant to have on hand...which one should I ask for?

Great news!!!! :bighug: I know feeding tubes are a necessity sometimes and most cats tolerate it well. My guess is some hate it and I bet Leo will eat even better once its out. If he wouldn’t let you near it is probable he wants it out more than you. I too feel some pain meds just don’t agree with pets/people. I was given Morphine once when in the hospital and hated the way it made me feel. Some people don’t have that experience. I tend to think our critters can have similar reactions to meds.
So glad Leo has turned a corner and he was purring with tail in the air. Our kitties tails can tell us alot about how they feel;)

    Mirtazapine 7.5mg - Dosing is 1/8-1/4 pill
This appy enhancer is a human drug that is an anit-depressant. I makes Gizmo very vocal, loving, purry and sometimes a bit obnoxious. I usually get 3 days enhancement out of 1/4 pill - but it can be given ever 8-9 hours I think. What I have found is that it loses it effectiveness if given too frequently - but that shouldn't be an issue.

    Cyproheptadine
I think this is a human drug. It is an anti-histamine - I don't remember the dose of the pill but my RX was 1/4 of a tablet - I will never give it to Gizmo again. It really did a number on him and spaced him out completely. Scared me to death. I thought I had killed him. He couldn't stand up but was too hyper (?) to lay down - just walked in circles and fell off the dresser.

Zrytec - OTC human allergy medicine
I haven't tried this yet but I think I will at some point.

Here is a link to more details on these:
    https://felinecrf.org/persuading_cat_to_eat.htm#appetite_stimulants

Now, with all that said - ECID and some do not tolerate the Mirtz and can handle the cypro just fine.

Really glad he is eating something. Hope the follow up goes well and once the icky feeding tube is out he gets back to normal quickly. :bighug:

If you do mirtazapine, try hard to get it in transdermal form. It is slower to adsorb so less likely to get bad side effects some cats get on it. Give once a day.

Cypro, some cats only need a crumb sized piece to help.

@LizzieInTexas thanks for the info. I did give Leo a sliver of Zyrtec yesterday and again this morning. Pretty sure it helped. He’s eaten 1 primal nugget today and about 20 S&C nuggets. Decent start .

The tube is out. @Love-Paula aka Woodsywife , no sedation needed to remove it. They said his mouth looks great. I asked for an appy stimulant and he said "we're not there yet, give it a few more days" :arghh::rolleyes::banghead: I said "why is it that no one is concerned with him hardly eating! I'll use the zyrtec for now and then call my regular vet if need be. He has eaten better today then in the last 4 days so all paws crossed it continues to pick up. I did get a 3 day pack of Onsior which is an anti-inflammatory ..like a baby ibuprofen which he tolerated well previously. .Thanks again for all the support....mama is/was about to lose it :p:p
