Yesterday's .. or several days ago...

First things first... I am soooo sorry guys! I always feel guilty missing a day's post and it seems I have not been to the board in several! Work is a mess right now with one of my managers down, which leaves 2 of us on board. One of us has to be in the store at all times. Needless to say, I have not had much free time. Classes also started back up this week and they are big ones. Sleep has been about 3 hours a night... But, we are here! Pig and I have missed everyone these past few days!

Revelations... Well, I am wondering if I am still over feeding. @Wendy&Neko this correlation is undeniable now. His numbers went down when he came off raw, but as soon as I started giving it again they started to climb. I do not think that it is the raw, per-say, but something associated with it.

To begin, I am a freaking dunce. Ugh!! So, I have been going through this complicated process to blend and freeze Pig's raw into these perfectly portioned meals based off the idea that 1tbs = .5oz of raw meat. Well, when he hit a pink today I really started to evaluate my plans... And that is when the biggest DUH! moment of this whole think hit me. There are 24oz of food in one RC container. Between my 2 ice-cube trays there are 28 compartments. I can neatly fill 24 of those compartments with 1 container of RC, no extras or shortages. What does this mean? Well, apparently something far to obvious for my overworked brain to conceive.. This means that each meat-cube is precisley 1oz of raw meat, just like feline-nutrition.org said it was. Why did this not occur to me?? How in the flipping world did this just fly right past my brain? I had been thinking of canned measurements so in that world 1tbs canned food blended with water = .5oz of actual food. Now in the RC world. So... He had been getting 1oz of RC at BID and +3, +6, +9 for a grand total of 8oz of food in 24 hours! :banghead::banghead::banghead: That is way more than he needs!

Moved his meals to equal about 5.5 oz a day and we will see if this slowly crests those #s down a bit. I am not positive this is it, though. The good thing is this, though, that even given the larger daily amounts he handled it beautifully and did not constipate even once! No swollen bladder! It is a bit freaky to see how little he defecates on the RC, but I know this is normal.

And on that note... Despite the obvious rise in BG, I plan to continue the raw for a few reasons. Again, the other benefits are enormous and his difference in behaviors is undeniable. He just feels better. I do not think it is the RC, exactly. I do think his system is reacting in someway. I have been doing a lot of reading into IBD and the basic premise when making changes is to do them very slowly and hold them for a while, because kitty will react regardless. I think that is a bit of what all of this is. His system is just so sensitive and his gut flora is not built properly yet and all of this effects his numbers. There is something there, I am just not entirely positive on what, exactly, just yet.

Other than that, all is really well. He is maintaining digestive stability in the sense that he is peeing and pooping normally (even had another semi-formed poo, but I am staying my hand at posting the pic :p), his appetite is ravenous, and he is acting as if he feels better! I do notice some discomfort after giving the 1/4 tab probiotic, but that is to be expected. Even I get cramps when I take a lot of those... It all must be done in very slow steps..

Has he been gaining weight? I weigh Gizmo weekly to make sure he is holding. Pig is much more active so may need more food.

I actually researched some info on RC this weekend and their website says 1/3 cup (3-4oz 2x/day) so you aren't too (much) high on your amount.

Really glad to hear he is doing so well :).

Don't go by quantity of food, it rather number of calories. For Neko, her 4 oz or raw a day had the equivalent calories as a 5.5 oz of canned. And do as Lizzie suggests, do regular weigh ins when you are trying the new food, to see what it is doing to their weight. Acros are notorious for trying to con you that you aren't feeding enough.:p

I am glad you increased. Hopefully he'll trend down with new dose Wonkiness out of his system now, and the depot is building.

Thank Gawd for no more poo pics:rolleyes::D LOL

Glad to hear that Pig is doing well. And also glad to see he is still in the 23.0 - 26.0 Insulin dose range. That is a far cry from the 50.0 range he was getting just 4-6 weeks ago.

Our kids still mostly get Fancy Feast. Leo only likes it when it is "fresh". If it sits out for 2 hours or more then "it is bad". What a goofy kitteh. I think it must have a stronger scent or something.

We are now in the dog days of summer like you are. This is the part I don't like. Looking forward to fall weather in 4 months.

You are perfectly right... In fact, I just got back from the Wally world where I bought digital scales for both his food and himself! Now, I just need to go to Amazon and order those amazing spoons! I looked at WM to see if they started carrying ones in the lower measurements, but they have not...

By my calculations, he should be getting about 6oz a day, which equates to the 3oz 2x a day. I will spread that out, of course. He would get sooooo constipated! Thank you!! I hope Gizmo is feeling good today!! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Okay. So per my calculations (and we all know they can be flawed...)… Weruva claims there are 151 kcals in a 6oz can of Fowl Ball. There are 32 kcals in an ounce of RC. This makes his daily intake a little over 4.5 oz to = the 6oz canned. However, he was looking a little skinny to me, so I am going to start him on 6oz of RC with regular weigh ins (just bought another scale! :p) and see where that takes us.

I have a feeling once this 'flare' starts to calm after the initial shock to his system, his numbers will decrease a bit, like they did last time... Hoping to see some greens again soon. Already he is slowing coming down as this new dose kicks in.. All those BCSs and Skips did a number to his depot for sure.

Good thing, I now have help at home, so I can get a lot tighter on his dosing!

I could not agree more. Even with the increase on dose because of diet, the reduction he saw the last few weeks is undeniable. And we have not even made the 2 month mark!

    How are the boys doing??

Fowl Ball is a bit on the leaner side of calories. It was Gizmo's primary food for a while. Now he isn't too fond of the shreds - but I still give it to him every once in a while. Until @Beth 73 turned me on to the Whole Earth Duck I was using an immersion blender to puree(?) it - which was working but a lot of work.

Dealing with a FD kitty is tough. SO many things to keep track of. I'd wager to say ALL of us have made a bone-headed move at some point. I know I did. Know that you are doing everything in your power to take care of Pig, even with one heck of a busy day you still find time for him. Jack was notorious for the Acro food trick. He'd whine right after feeding sometimes which made me second guess myself whether I fed him his normal meal or the civvie sized meal. They are creative to say the least.

Glad to hear your boy is doing well and has had a nice drop in the dose. I know having pens last more then a few days must be encouraging!

No thanks on the poo pics offer to everyone! I went to the dark side of Youtube last night. There are lots of vids of blackhead popping. We are talking 50 Million views. If aliens ever come here, we can show them how we utilize all this great technology...for stupid stuff.

The boys are doing pretty good. Leo is having a low-eating week. So I'm giving different encouragements like fresh cans, and small carb snacks. We are so lucky....they are such great brothers. Leo luvs LD.
