Looking for the product methylcobalamin B12 for my diabetic cat with the weak rear leg thing going on. Can’t seem to find it locally. I hear it has helped in some cases.

Thanks. I don’t know for sure what I’m looking for exactly. Just read where it has helped for some. My local vets dont carry it but can order it. Was hoping to find it as an injectable. My baby is having a tough time getting around and want to try and help before it gets worse.

Zobaline crumbles to a powder with just your fingers and has almost no flavor. Just crush it into food.

I urge you to post in the Main Health forum
    http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/feline-health-the-main-forum.28/

Back leg weakness is neuropathy. It is a side effect of high blood glucose, which causes glucose toxicity. In turn, this causes the nerves in the back legs to degrade. The cure is twofold.

    1) Your kitteh must get regulated. The route to blood glucose regulation is proper insulin doses, combined with home testing to ensure they are effective.
    2) B12 supplements via Zobaline as discussed by others.

Many kittehs on this forum have had neuropathy and had the condition reversed. It is a horrible condition. Leo had it in late 2016 and we were "considering the big decision". With patience and the proper treatment, Leo had an almost 99% reversal and he now walks around with almost no neuropathy.

Thanks Jeff. He is prettt well regulated. I take him in every couple weeks or so to have the glucose curve done. The last which was this week showed his level a little low actually so we’re decreasing the dose a little. Probably need to check into the home testing stuff maybe. Is it difficult to use? Still trying to find the zobaline. Vet is ordering the injectable methylcobalamin hopefully in the meantime.

Why pay to have a vet test him. For a single time purchase - you can get the tester and the strips. That would be the same cost as the vet visit. Plus you would not have the hassle of taking the cat to the vet.

I recommend you look on the Main Health subforum. There are lots of existing discussions of home testing and the types of testers that people bought.

That’s what I was thinking Jeff. Just didn’t know how much of a pain they were to use. He’s a good boy about letting me do the other stuff to him. I’ll try and find the sub forum you are talking about

About every 2 weeks it seems there is a new thread about test meters. I stopped joining those conversations. But you can look in the main forum and see multiple discussions. Here is one.

There is no 5 minute path to enlightenment. Really, the only way to successfully treat diabetes is to read about it and do home testing. We have lost cats on this forum from people who were not testing, or were hardly doing tests.

The top of the insulin subforums have good sticky posts to read.

I helped write the Prozinc one. But really the insulins all have the same effect of providing body cells the ability to absorb glucose.

Geeesh. I’m so confused. Vet never said anything about all this extra stuff. I need a school to be able to go to about it or something. Other than the weak rear legs thing my Conan seems fine but now I’m not so sure.

Hi Ed - it sounds like you have a good vet. However, like I said in the previous post, the weak legs are a side effect from not being regulated. It is your option to learn more if you want to.

Oh I want to learn more but either I’m not very smart or it is all too confusing. Now the vet says they haven’t been able to find the injectable methyl b12 so I will order some of the zobaline in the meantime I guess. Also hoping to zero in on a reliable home testing kit. In the forum I can’t get a read on a good one to try. Good review then bad review on same products. No recommendation from vet.

Ed, click this link and post in the Main Forum, you will get more responses regarding choosing a meter, how to test, etc. This forum, where you are at now, is only a welcome mat. The information is here if you want to learn, all you have to do is click on yellow tagged infos & stickies in different forums and read.

    This is the link: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/feline-health-the-main-forum.28/

Many members use the Relion Confirm or Micro meter from Walmart, it is not expensive, testing strips are readily available, you can also buy inexpensive lancets at Walmart. You don't need much to get started, you just have to get started.

I would say the actual total ramp-up time for most new people with diabetic cats is 20-30 hours spread over the first six weeks. There is a lot to learn. Diabetes is a complicated disease, but also well understood. The dance between sugar, food, insulin, and testing - can take awhile to master.

Leo's neuropathy was cured with BG regulation and Zobaline.

I agree, this is not real easy. But the reward is a healthy loving kitteh. Just ask one of my boys
Leo who is approaching his 4th year as a diabetic
Little Dude who was a stray feral we adopted
