How to throw away less food . . .

Please give me your best tips.

Sometimes Pretty Girl will eat food that's been in the refrigerator and sometimes she won't. Since she free feeds I always leave out food for her and her non-diabetic twin, Sweet Pea. Sometimes it's eaten but often a lot is left 10 or 12 hours later.

What do you do to avoid throwing away so much food? Or is that just how it is?

 

If they consistently eat much less than you leave out, couldn't you leave less out?

I add bone broth and water to my girls' food and microwave it a few seconds to warm it up. If I am around, I will add additional water a time or two to freshen it up a bit. They always seem to end up eating more after I do that.

 

I know, right? That seems to make the most obvious sense. I think it's that I worry there won't be enough while I'm gone or asleep . . . so maybe it's just my thinking that needs to be adjusted.

Yes, I add water when I'm around but they are often wise to it and won't eat it after it's been there a while. Just being cats.

 

Sometimes mine eat everything left out, sometimes there’s a bunch left. We have strays we feed so they eat most of the leftovers.

 

Just get more cats and maybe even a dog. One of mine, including my dog as the last result, always finish everything. Some of them, especially the dog, also cleans the cans.

 

My civvie is a former stray. He eats all the cat food. There are no leftovers. So, yeah... just adopt another cat that isn't picky about food.

Some cats prefer smaller more frequent meals. My diabetic cat won’t eat a full 3oz can in one sitting. So I give him half of one each serving.

If you’re serving from the fridge, do you ever warm it up a little? Cold cat food will have virtually no smell or aroma, two things that are quite important to a cat.

I have 3 other cats already. They are picky too.

 

I've found that my cats regain interest in leftover food if I stir it around in their dish. They think that makes it new again or something.
