Furball was happy & purry this morning. It's nice to see that blue. MC is still eating pretty good.

I found several fleas this morning. Most of them seemed to be new fleas, but there were some bigger ones. I hope the DE starts working soon. I'm afraid they're going to get back on MC and she doesn't need that. I combed her out last night and didn't find any fleas on her, but I found a few on Furball. I thought the Advantage was supposed to last longer. It was just this past Monday I put it on them.

What a nightmare Carla. Unfortunately it just takes time. No matter what you are using. Did you use Advantage on all the kitties?

Hey Carla, yes, fleas are a nightmare. It can take up to 2 applications to completely kill off the flea/larvae cycle. It is maddening! My dog, Lucy, is so allergic to flea bites and develops nasty hot spots and chews herself up. I hope it is remedied soon. Sounds like it is slowing down.

Good point, if you didn't they will thrive on a new host.

Went back to sleep for a little while and got up and tested Furball and got the 209. I'm wondering if the 178 was a bad test.

I combed MC and found 3 fleas on her. That's not good with her anemia.

@Bobbie And Bubba, @LizzieInTexas I gave all four cats Advantage. Last Sunday was actually the 4th time I've given it to them. The first two months didn't seem to do anything. Last week I read the instructions and it said you could give it 7 days later instead of waiting a month if you had a bad infestation. I did and that's when MC had the bad reaction to it. We are assuming she licked some of it, but I'm not 100% sure and now I'm afraid to use it on her again. I also don't want to give it early again. With MC's anemia from the fleas, I really don't want any fleas on her. She's just now starting to feel better. I wish I could check her blood at home and see if the anemia is getting better.

Look at her gums. They should be pink. If gray or pale indicstes anemia. The IM used that with Gizmo when he rechecked. He looked in his mouth when he was growling/complaining and said, wow! That is s nice pink mouth. I'll bet we are doing good. BW confirmed it.

You may have to pull out the big guns to treat.

Are you in a connected home (Share walls with other residences)? Have you treated the yards?

@LizzieInTexas MC's gums look pink, but I'm not sure if it is a pale pink or not. My home is a tri-level stand alone. No I haven't done anything to the yard yet.

Hi Carla, This is what I found on Advantage and life cycle of fleas:

Advantage is proven to stop fleas from biting in 3 - 5 minutes, providing the fastest relief. Fleas are killed within 12 hours of application. Re-infesting fleas start dying within one hour and all are killed within two hours.

I would think with a large infestation, it might take longer and the fleas you found might still be alive but not biting (hopefully). Also, if there are a lot of them, they could be hatching in waves, meaning as soon as a bunch are killed, another bunch could be hatching. It's a horrible thing but you've treated the kitties and they should be good for a while so keep treating your home to get all of the remaining ones and any new hatch-lings. I might be remembering wrong but I think you need to be vigilant for quite a while.

The flea life cycle goes from egg to larva to pupa before the final adult stage. The process can take anywhere from two to three weeks to several months, depending on the conditions. Adult cat and dogfleas can live up to one year in ideal situations, but only about one to two weeks if no host is present.

If it is dry and not going to rain today or in the next couple of days I would apply the DE around your foundation. :bighug:

Carla, I’m remembering what I did so please forgive if you are already doing it or I’m repeating myself  Furniture: Lightly sprinkled DE under the cushions and then covered the couch/chair with sheets/blankets . Then every day I would remove the sheets and wash them . Probably wouldn’t need every day but I had that time . Carpets: vacuumed at least every other day . Worked DE into the carpet ( wore a mask so didn’t breath the dust in) Kitties: flea combed like it was my job . You ARE making a difference , the fleas you see now are new hatches. It does take up to 90 days to kill off eggs and larvae . Hang in there cos you are killing them !!!

Can you get Advantage II. People have been complaining for a year that regular advantage isn't affective anymore. Guess there is a new breed of fleas, or the formula is weaker.

Maybe switch to a different brand like Revolution or Frontline. I have never used Advantage , but just reading what Paula said, maybe there is something to it.

Do any of the animals go outside. I did treat around the foundation or the house and any scrubs and trees up close to the house because fleas like shade.

The weather this week is the same as last week, hot and humid and a change of thunderstorms every day. I don't have enough DE to do the outside right now. My mom only got a 12 oz. bag and I'm half way through it and haven't had time to do every room in the house. I hit the trouble spots first. I have some ordered from Amazon, but it won't get here until the middle of next week.

I don't have carpet. I have wood and tile floors. I've been sprinkling it around on the floors and rubbing it in the cracks. I've been putting it on top of the cushions, not under and not covering them up. I'll keep that in mind. I've been flea combing the kitties twice a day. Thanks for the suggestions.

@Olive & Paula and @Bobbie And Bubba I am using Advantage II. Sorry I should have been more clear. I don't think they sell regular Advantage any more.

All my cats are indoors only.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions on the fleas. I really do appreciate it. Hopefully some of them will help. I have to go out this afternoon because Monday is my dad's birthday. When I get back I hope to put more DE in some of the other rooms do some cleaning, but I'm fighting a head cold. Hopefully I will feel well enough to.

Carla, just know I fully feel your pain in this :bighug: Bless all your efforts that every effort you make is multiplied and kills all stage of flea everywhere in your house . You could use non food grade ( grey in color) outside . Another thing we did is remove our shoes before coming in the house . If wearing a hazmat suit would have helped , I’d have done it :woot: We had a fraile 21 year old kitty at that time so had to stick to mostly natural, non chemical methods. Have you thought ab applying VERY SMALL DE around each kitty’s neck? Again, use an Elizabethan collar on them if you do this so none of the dust gets in their nose. Sending dead flea prayers ( did a lot of praying over our house too:))

@Beth 73 Thanks Beth. I've been praying too. I'm thinking about putting some DE on the cats. The fleas are getting on my civvie Kitty too.

I called my dad and rescheduled for next weekend. I'm feeling much worse and don't want to make him sick for his birthday.

I still see it here in petsmart. I think the Advantage and frontline at least what I hear from people here is resistant to fleas now. Those buggers just have mutated to stronger species.

Do you have an Elizabethan collar u could use if you put DE on them ? I would put the collar on them and then take a small amount on my hand and rub it around their neck and down their spine , covering a fleas dining and pooping places :banghead: One time I got a bit too aggressive and some went up one of the civvie brother’s nose and he sneezed the rest of the day :(. Take care of yourself too, Carla. All of this that you’ve been thru stresses the immune system . Sending prayers:bighug::bighug:

@Beth 73 I don't know if I have a collar. I'll have to look. I'm really not feeling well at all. I fell asleep for a couple of hours. This past two weeks have been very stressful.

I've been told there is a good chance my cats have tapeworms because of the fleas. Has anyone heard of mixing DE into cat food to get rid of tapeworms? I read online yesterday you can mix 1 to 2 teaspoons in there food for this. I wonder how safe it is. Thanks.

I'd be concerned about it being dehydrating. I think that's how it kills bugs: it dehydrates them. Perhaps, short-term, that's the lesser evil, though. Hope you find some good info about it.

And I hope MC is still eating well and Furball is still purring happily.

Funny , I was just looking this up today because of Bubba hunting and ingesting mice which could have fleas and give him tapeworms. I am going to start giving them DC in the food again according to this site. It won't hurt them which is the beauty of DC. I hate giving them the Drontal which is poison.

    http://wolfcreekranchorganics.com/library/diatomaceous_earth_worming.html

Apparently it can be given as a preventive also. If this article doesn't speak of that, let me know, I have another one earmarked and I could have gotten them flipped.
