Hey there! Sam has been in Vetsulin for a very short time. She was diagnosed last week and I switched her to wet food (Friskies Pate) and have only been giving 1 unit (vet prescribed 2). I've been testing her BG with the Accuchek compact and the past few days have been in the blue and last night was low enough (136) that I decided I didn't have enough info on how she reacts to the insulin(haven't established her nadir) so i opted to no shoot. This morning she is at 152 and I'm still not sure if I should give her a shot. Any suggestions on how to proceed from here?
I'm really glad you decided to lower the dose on your own! She's still a tiny bit higher than ideal. I suggest you give 0.5 u (eyeball if you have to) and get at least one test between +4 and +6. You need that data to properly assess the dose. Also get a before bed test in the evening. It's great that you're testing at home!
Thanks! I didn't see this until later so I skipped the dose. That leads me to another question. Here is what she tested at so far today: No shot 152 +5 138 +9 125 Is it strange that she hasn't had a shot since yesterday morning and her #'s are decreasing? We are getting ready to leave for a outing tonight, should I still do a .5 shot? Thanks again for your guidance!
Looks like she might be heading toward remission. Most people here would recommend a tiny dose to ease her into near normal numbers. You could try 0.5 u or even 0.25 u tomorrow AM when you can be around to monitor.
Here's a guide for kitties who might be going OTJ ("off the juice"): Prior to starting an OTJ trial, one wants to see kitty mostly in the range of a healthy cat (50 - 80 mg/dL), but under 100 overall... with only occasional readings in the 100 - 120 range. Remission is achieved when kitty can go 14 days without insulin while maintaining normal blood glucose values under 100 overall. Most will stay in the 50 - 80mg/dL range. Although, some will occasionally experience BG numbers up to 120 mg/dL.
