    Yesterday
    AMPS 338 shooting 2.75u

Boomer ate the usual last night, waking us around 3:30 (+8.5) because he was hungry but didn't want to eat his +6 fuds (although he would if we got up and stirred them). Today I'm changing the timer of his auto feeder so that his +9 will actually be available at +8.5.

Boomer's drop yesterday surprised me; although he does occasionally work the juice the day of the increase, it's more usual for it to be the following day. He knew, of course, that both DH and I would be away at the same time (for a short period of time). Cats!

Allen ate well last night. His b/w results are back; he has pancreatitis.....Spec fPL 11.5 normal range is 0.0 - 3.5 ug/L
    He is also anemic ......Hemoglobin 78 normal range 103 - 162 g/L
I believe the kidney disease is stable but I'm not good at reading these reports so I'll be questioning Dr Larry further about this.
He's not feeling well this morning. He was laying in his little bed when I opened his door this morning. He felt cold to me so I got a hot water bottle, put it under a blanket on the bed and put him beside it. He wasn't responding to me much at all although I don't get the impression he's in pain (he's stretched out, not meat loafing ). When I took his breakfast in to him I put it on the bed right beside him; I didn't expect him to respond but then I saw his nose move as he smelled the food and he got up and started eating.

Our little guy has a lot going on and we may have to say goodbye soon.

Tomorrow is DH's appt with the oncologist-radiologist. We have to be there at 9:15 (+2.25).

What will be done for Allen's anemia? How old is he now?

Boomer is giving you a hard time with his food.

Allen perked up a bit after he received his fluids and actually purred loudly when given scritches. So I updated Dr Larry and asked if a day on iv fluids would help and he agreed it would. So we're taking Allen in now.

Not yet; Dr Larry is consulting a specialist because he doesn't know what would be causing the anemia. And we haven't actually spoke yet about the p'titis.

Sorry about the pancreatitis but hopefully the meds will get Allen back on track to feeling well. I hope he gets daily cerenia for nausea and bupe for pain if needed. Advanced kidney disease can cause anemia. If the anemia is nonregenerative there’s medication in the form of weekly shots that can be given. You wouldn’t want to start them until the HCT is under 20% so if higher than that B vitamins can help. If the CKD is not advanced the cause of the anemia needs to be found. Perhaps a bleed from straining to poop? Anemia will definitely tank the appetite. I hope Dr. Larry and the specialist figure it out quickly.

Good luck tomorrow for DH too. :bighug:

I don't really have any more info about Allen yet....at least none that makes sense to me

Dr Larry spoke to a specialist which, according to his email, was going to be about the anemia. But then Dr Larry indicated that
"A simple review of pancreatitis would have told me that it's usually accompanied by anemia". So I'm assuming he didn't talk to her about that. Not sure what they talked about but whatever it was caused him to look back at Allen's previous tests and the ultrasound....and the write up about the ultrasound indicated "small pancreatic mass". This is what we believed to be an Insulinoma (even though they are rare) because of Allen's hyperglycaemia. Now...it's like Dr Larry is suggested that this mass could have been pancreatitis instead....I didn't think pancreatitis took the form of a mass? Would/could they mistake a mass as cancer when it was really pancreatitis? idk.

Since we didn't get Allen into the clinic until after 10:00, Dr Larry wants to keep him until 7:00. So DH will have to pick Allen up because t/f/s is at 7:00 so I'll have to be here to give Boomer his shot. This is not ideal but it is what it is.

Can an inflamed area of the pancreas look like a mass on the ultrasound?

Max had chronic pancreatitis for years and a couple of acute attacks and was never anemic. Nothing I’ve read about pancreatitis mentions anemia. Maybe it’s time to take Allen to the specialist. A mass might explain everything.

Well, we've known for 1.5 years that he has a mass on his pancreas. We were told it was likely an insulinoma...although they are rare it would certainly explain his hyperglycaemia.

idk but when I googled "pancreatitis and anemia in cats" I do see a few articles indicating that cats with pancreatitis are sometimes anemic".
Allen has so many issues going on, it's hard to figure out what symptom is related to what disease.

My vet indicated that anything the is ongoing or chronic like pancreatitis, IBD or CKD can cause anemia. She figures that is why Jones is anemic. Though my vet indicated along with his IM that there was nothing we could do to assist outside of relieving the underlying issue. Which to me sounded like a big circle of we can't do much at this point in time.

Good luck with the oncologist. Take a note pad or something to record the conversation. Tons of info might be coming your way and it can be a lot that hits you right away.

Gizmo has pancreatitis, ckd and anemia. Unknown reason for anemia but we are treating with Epogen (erythropoiesis stimulating agent or ESA) with very good results.

    Whole bunch of info here
    http://www.felinecrf.org/anaemia.htm

Per my IM the treatment is the same regardless of which type.

Sending you lots of hugs and vines for DH, Allen and for Boomer to behave when he knows that both momma and daddy are out of the house!

Yo, dude, not cool going too low when no ones in the house......

Why? Once I started Gizmo on the Epogen he greatly improved including activity, BG numbers and appetite (including weight gain). What ever is going on right now isn't because he (Gizmo) is anemic.

Thanks Bobbie! Allen is just in for the day at my suggestion as he appeared dry even though he's getting 125 ml of fluids twice a day. So Dr Larry puts him on an IV for the day.

And Allen is home. He ate today at the vet's (I don't know how much) and he ate a bit when he got home.
Thanks @LizzieInTexas for the link; I've read through quickly and will definitely need to read more thoroughly tomorrow. And I will be asking Dr Larry about the Epogen.

That's quite ok @Tracey&Jones , my vet also says to treat the pancreatitis with fluids and that will take care of the anemia. I'm compiling a list of questions etc but need to read Tanya's article again first.

Kris, do you remember when Buddy had a partial pancreatomy last year. The doctor took him to surgery saying he saw a mass, which turned out to be his inflamed pancreas. After that I have seen articles saying that an inflamed pancreas can be seen on an US as a mass.
