I am having a hard time getting Tooters in the blue/Green. I added some more testing since I have been off the last 2 days. I'm thinking the increase has helped, but do I increase more? I appreciate all the feedback!

Good to see you are getting a few more spot tests. Those are really helpful in determining how a particular dose is doing. In order to know what to do next, I suggest you read the two Sticky Notes about the Tight Regulation Protocol and the Start Low Go Slow method are the two dosing methods used here and guide us in deciding when and what changes to make with a dose. Figure out which method most suits your lifestyle and goals for Tooters. It does look like Tooters could use an increase again, and the dosing methods will help tell you when. Once you have an idea what dosing method you’d like to follow, it’ll help to put either TR or SLGS in your signature. That’ll help us help you and stop us from asking again which dosing method. :)

I am not sure which I’m doing. I’m not sure I understand the difference. I guess SLGS. can you help clarify differences. In general, I free feed (I have another cat and they grew up eating dry kibble). Once the Holiday season is over my work schedule will stabilize and I will be able to test more.

TR is a more aggressive protocol, with more testing and increases as soon as 3 days (6 cycles). The reduction point is lower and you can increase quicker per protocol because you are testing more, which lets you know how your kitty is responding to a particular dose. Also when following TR protocol, you are feeding a wet food only diet. If you are feeding any dry food, you would need to follow the SLGS protocol. SLGS, while still a good protocol, is more conservative than TR. A person might choose this protocol if they are unable to test as frequently. As a result, the reduction point is higher, doses are held longer, and curves (testing every 2 hours for 12 hours) are done once a week to see how the kitty is doing on that dose. After a curve, the kitty's dose can be increased and then held for another week.

I can't remember the exact whys, but dry food can add variables to the BGs that don't work well with TR protocol, so that's why dry food is only given with SLGS protocol. Free feeding is okay, although just remember to pick up food within 2 hours of preshots to avoid the PS number being food-influenced.

Thanks for the info. Just to clarify, I no longer give dry food - just was stating they are used to eating as they wanted, not on schedules.

Ugh.... just tested Tooters and he was 470!

Wonderful! Then you definitely have your choice in which protocol you can use. :) When we switched from Vetsulin to Basaglar, we started with SLGS protocol to give us some time to acclimate. After Lou was diagnosed with IAA (insulin resistance), we decided we wanted to be more aggressive and so we switched to TR protocol. It's nice that you don't have to pick one and stick with it.

I definitely hear you about the free feeding. My kids used to be free fed, but my civvie Bella started overeating and so we had to switch to a schedule to curb her. Ugh. It was hard, but worthwhile. It was worse when Lou was initially diagnosed since he was starving all the time. Thankfully both my kids have been doing really well with the multiple meals a day schedule we have. I hope your kitties get used to the schedule without too much attitude (Ha, yeah we can wish right?? :p). I hope Tooters gets out of the stratosphere and comes back down for you!
