My vet prescribed Bromocryptine Mesylate to treat Gryphon's Acromegaly. I believe it is similar to Cabergoline. I didn't have an opportunity to ask why he chose the Bromocryptine over Cabergoline. I would like to know more about the use of the drug in cats, and how it compares with Cabergoline. A Google search didn't produce any helpful information. I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience with this drug. Thanks!!

I would ask the vet for a copy of any papers or research studies using it in acromegalic cats. I wouldn’t want my cat to be a guinea pig. There have been several studies of trying medications used in human acros on cats, with poor results. All I could find for cats was it being used in one type of Cushings, and another reference to help prevent spraying. The type of Cushings is also caused by a pituitary tumour, but different type of tumour from the one that causes acromegaly. The side effects are also something to consider. I can point you to research and acrocats using cabergoline, which main known side effect is some cats have mild GI upset.

In the years I have been here, I have never heard of anyone using bromocriptine mesylate for acromegalic cats.

One option might be to email the diabetes remission clinic at the Royal Veterinary College. They are the world leaders in research on Feline acromegaly and also in touch with doctors treating human acros. I am sure they would know if any research has been done on that drug,

I also spent a bunch of time researching Acro options for Leo, before we finally selected SRT. I never heard of that medication in any of my research. So I agree with Wendy that you should ask for supporting evidence or papers on where and when that new drug was used for Acro in cats.

Awesome news, good luck with it! I see Gryphon earned a reduction today too. :)

Cabergoline seems to take a week or two to kick in, but when it does, reductions can become fast and furious. Use caution as your guide.

Thanks, Wendy! I’ll monitor closely. Do people usually notice an improvement in other Acromegaly symptoms, or just a reduction in Insulin dose?

@Olive & Paula has mentioned an improvement in other acro symptoms. I seem to remember a few others did too.
