Good pm preshots for the last two nights so that's encouraging. We are up to 11.5-12 units which is just NUTS. Had a brand new bottle of ProZinc only used 7 times break in my hands. Very odd. So that sucks. It was one from the supply closet so at least it wasn't $120 but still. I put CC on a diet a week and a half ago. I picked her up and she felt heavier then ever which I'm sure isn't helping her numbers or her stiff legs. She had to be close to 18 lbs. I feel like the diet is helping. Ideally she needs to lose 4-5 lbs. I've been trying to limit her to about 250 calories. Discovered she LOVES Pure Bites, so she's happy to get them as treats. So that's what's happening here.
Probably will get the acro test. It's an expensive time of year though. May wait a bit. The ProZinc. So weird. I was rolling out in my palms and suddenly my hands were wet. The bottom literally fell off of it. Cut my hand a little too. Luckily I keep a little from a previous bottle just in case, and I'm having a new one sent. Chewy raised their price $20.
It does seem nuts to be shooting that much insulin into a cat but sometimes it's necessary. I got up to 16u with Menace which I never imagined I would be able to do comfrtably. C.C's numbers look like you are making some progress . Hang in there. I know how it feels but you got this! I used to love Graham crackers for snacking and haven't had them for years. I had to go look up those cookies. Dang I don't think we have Keebler cookies here and now I'm really upset cause they sound SOOOOOOO good! Might have to get the crackers and put my own chocolate on them!
Oh Kris, they are milk chocolate and that just doesn't cut it. They used to have the dark chocolate digestives and I loved them but I haven't seen them in years either! Please don't tell me you can get the dark chocolate ones in Ottawa and it's just my stupid supermarkets!
I *think* I saw these in Ottawa: https://www.amazon.ca/Mcvities-Dark-Chocolate-Digestives-300g/dp/B00I8VS45G You could order a huge stash from Amazon.ca!
Sorry, Janet ... You're right. They're good biscuits though that are crumbly and very tasty. British in origin so we have them here in Canada.
Hey Kris. Just checked out the where to buy the McVitties store locator and the first option I found is a non-existent store just down the street from me. Apparently after living here for almost 40 years, one of my neighbours must have a grocery shop in their basement. I'm at 240 and the shop is at 171. You'd think I'd have noticed by now! Thankfully there are some other options so I know where I am going tomorrow! Thanks for the tip!
We can get digestives here in the US as well, but they are often in the "international foods" section of the grocery which cracks me up. I don't know why Americans don't eat them - they are delicious! and that's crazy about the bottom falling out of the vial! Janet, you just don't know your own strength! I wonder if you could contact the manufacturer about it or if they would just disregard since you didn't purchase from a vet/pharmacy?
Well here in Alabama, it's literally called the "British Foods" section...apparently that's as international as it gets for us!
Here at the Stupid Market there are too many people who won't try anything new so now Falafels are "Meatless Balls". It's next to the Wonder Bread, just over from where half the store is devoted to frozen pizza. There's nothing better than dragging a kid just old enough and tall enough to read through the pharmacy. Momma, what's this?
Meatless Balls?!?!?!?!?! That honestly sounds way more disgusting than falafels, so I don't know how much luck that will bring in selling them!
Another nice preshot tonight! What do you guys think I should give? @Rachel . @Kris & Teasel . @Djamila . @Sharon14
So sorry Janet! I was right in the middle of dinnertime for my own cats and just now popped in. I see you dropped to 11.5 which I think was fine. I might have been tempted to do 11.75 like last night since that seemed to work well...but at the same time, you want to be safe and with that lovely drop today, I can understand that 11.5 might be a bit safer. That might be best anyway since who knows if she dropped a bit more last night and that caused that bounce this morning...so overall, I think 11.5 was a good decision.
Ah well...as you say it's a crap shoot. You did the best you could at the time and I probably would have ended up suggesting the same thing. CC has always been a tougher case, and you do a great job with her. Good news? You can get a good night sleep without worrying if you want.
How exciting to see that green on C.C.'s sheet! Looks like you are finally honing in on her "sweet spot" dose wise which is great. Go C.C. Show your Momma what you can do!
Should I lower the dose a bit starting tomorrow? Hit another light green tonight. Currently steering her up (setting a timer. I took nightime cold medicine because I'm sick) zzzzzz
Oh man Janet. They do pick the most inopportune times to throw low greens and it's a b***h getting up to test when you're feeling poorly. I think it's best you reduce a little (at least 11.75u or even 11.5u) so you can get some rest and C.C stays safe. She's been seeing a lot more decent numbers lately and with 2 drops below 68 in the last few days I think she's earned a small reduction.
Late to the party, but yes I think a decrease would be good. You want to find a good dose that doesn't drop CC too far so you have to watch her like a hawk, but still get her into good numbers!
Ok so I am home sick today which let me see that 11.75 may be too much as she's down to 65 at +5. So I'll stick with 11.5 and test over the weekend. She had a bit of a bounce number last night but was finally under 300 this morning! So nice to finally see some progress
When you get to those higher doses, your dose adjustments can be done in 0.5u or even full units as needed because 0.25u is really a drop in the bucket when you are giving that high a dose. Glad to see C.C.'s progress and hope you get feeling better very soon.
She had a 220 preshot this morning. I'm going to be home again (still sick... Going to the dr later) but I lowered her to 11. I didn't want her going too low.
I'm liking the fact that her preshot was a yellow...NOT that you're sick! I hope you feel better soon, Janet!
CC is trying to help you feel better by giving you nicer numbers. I hope you get over your cold/flu soon.
Ok so I'm glad I'm home. I reduced her to 11 this morning. At 2.5 she was 118 which is quite a drop from 220 at preshot. so I gave her 1.5 ounces of high carb food and then left to drop my son at school. Now we are at +3.25 and she's down to 85 despite the high carb food. Looks like I'll be doing quite a bit of steering this morning.
Exciting but good you're home. She's definitely starting to respond much better. If it's a case of IAA that's beginning to "break" she might head down in dose a lot in a short time. You know what to do with lower BGs, Janet.
I'm really surprised her IAA test was neg. She's down to 69 at +3.5 and enjoying some forbidden gravy food. The grilled cheese ff stuff is like 21 carb.
Everything happens for a reason. Maybe I got sick so I could be home to keep her safe. I'm glad we have the weekend too to adjust the dose. Then I have a week of work, then 11 days off for Christmas break.
'Tis the season of teacher viruses - lots of folks are out around here too - and I caught it last week. I hope you recover quickly! And glad you can be home with CC while she is in the middle of changing the rules on you!
I was going to go in and suck it up today, but I do still have an awful sinus headache and dizzy... Probably a sinus infection.... and when I saw her number so much lower than usual today I thought I should stay. At least my lungs feel better today. Yesterday they were all crunchy sounding. I pushed it too much on Tues and Wed because I had to be there for auditions for the school play.
Glad I started early with the high carb. She's at 56@+4 yikes. I gave her gravy and some high carb kibble.
58@4.5 squeezing out the gravy from another can and some more high carb kibble. Edit up to 64 @5 whew. Better. Another edit... 114 at 5.5.... No food in the last 45 min so I think she's good.
Ok so what do you guys think I should dose tonight? 11 was way too much this morning. I had to steer for hours! I'm thinking 10?
Lowered to 10u today. At +4 she's down to 82! I gave her a low carb snack as she's usually lowest at +5-6. looks like I could have reduced even a little more. So exciting Update 69 at +5 even after the snack so I think I may go to 9.5 tonight.
Okay, you gave her a snack to soften that drop at +4 and even after that she was still in the 60s at +5. She is a BIT higher than this morning, but only by about 40 points, so I think I'd be tempted to drop to 9.5...means you can get some sleep too hopefully. However, if you feel 10 is better, go for it! I'm a big believer in mama-sense so whatever you think is best, really is best in my opinion.
Maybe I'll do a chubby 9.5. My son is sick (so am I) and I have a feeling it will be a long night either way. Lol
Wow! What an exciting run, happening at the worst time when you are not well! CATS! Looks like C.C.'s decided she's on a bit of a mission to lower her dose. I'm even more surprised because of her IAA test was negative. Maybe her pancreas just needed an extra big jump start. In any event, finger crossed the positive changes continue.
It's actually fine. It gave me an excuse to stay home and monitor her Thurs and Friday. Lol. Looks like tonight will not be as exciting so I can get to bed early. Zzzz
Holy cow guys.... 210 this morning. It's like a Christmas miracle unfolding before my eyes. My son still had a fever last night so his misfortune is CC'S fortune. I'll be home to test again. (Sorry to my school.... I do feel terrible about missing 3 days!) Everything happens for a reason. I believe we got sick this week just in time to help her manage these new low numbers during the day. Thank you, Lord.
Wow! CC is on a mission for sure! I'm sorry your son is still sick, but so glad you'll be home to keep an eye on CC...talk about timing!
WOW! Was just peeking at SS and saw you enter that beautiful green at +3. She may keep you on your toes a bit today but it will all be worth it. She's definitely on a mission! GO C.C.!!
I lowered to 8.5 but looks like even that might be a bit much. At almost 3 hours she's down to 79. She has at least 2 hours to still drop. I have her a spoonful of gravy from some shreds and a small handful of hc kibble. I'll test her in a half hour and see what she is
As long as I'm home that's fine. I'm going to have to go really conservative the rest of the week while I'm working! Yikes! Lol I was originally going to give 9 this morning but had second thoughts and went lower.... I'm glad I did!
It's hard enough with a kitty on "normal" doses of insulin when they start begging for reductions but even harder when they are on higher doses. Your spidey sense is obviously serving you well. I empathize completely. It's thrilling and terrifying at the same time. If you have to, you do a BCS and just look at it like a furshot. They happen and safety trumps all else.
She's a bit too low now at 58 at 3.5 so it looks like I'll be doing a lot of steering this morning. I was hoping the drop had slowed a bit more than that. Here we go again!
She's definitely telling you she wants less insulin! When she comes up a bit, hopefully she will just surf for while........ of course some of that depends on Momma's steering! Oh that there were a formula for that!
It does tend to get passed around in families, doesn't it? At least you get another day at home to keep an eye on your fur baby too.
High preshot today. Maybe I went TOO conservative yesterday when no one was home. 414 what do you guys think I should give
It's a tough one because CC hasn't been playing by any known rules lately! She does seem to run lower during the day sometimes so I think I'd be tempted to do 7.5. I'd probably do 8 or 8.5 if you were going to be home, but it's harder when she's been so volatile lately! So it looks like last night she probably stayed high...her usual pattern is to go down by +3 and since she didn't, I'm guessing she probably didn't get too low. I think she runs a little lower during the day, so maybe the same dose as last night would be good. It might not be enough, but who knows? I don't remember...do you leave food out during the day?
I do leave food out.... Breakfast stays and am auto feeder will give half a can at lunch. Laura is actually going to be home today because it's our sons Christmas show at school so she's going. (So bummed I'm going to miss it but I don't want to take off after 3 sick days home). After Friday we are home for 11 days and hopefully can get those numbers down again. So since she will be home I'll try the 8.5.
Ohhhh very nice! Then yeah, I like 8.5. If Laura can test and just sort of keep an eye on things (and steer if needed), this could help keep those numbers down and we'll have some good data for this number! I'm excited you guys will be home starting Friday. I'll be home starting then too, so I'll be watching your progress from over here and hoping we get to a good place while you're able to be home!
Thanks for your help. . I know her numbers and doses are all over the place this week!!!! I look forward to being home and getting a handle on these numbers. Plus she does run so different at night then during the day. If I was home I would have been tempted to do 9.5 but Laura isn't as confident a tester (getting better though). She's usually the shot person and I'm the tester person.
I vote 7.0u. When these guys start downward on dosing I tend to be conservative and that is a beautiful pre-shot tonight!
Looks like 8.5 today was a good call...she got some lovely blues and then was in yellows for the preshot tonight! I think 7 was a good idea for tonight. We know 8.5 was too much the other day on a similar number, so a nice reduction will hopefully let her have a nice smile curve and be in good numbers again in the morning!
