I hope Yoyo heads down and surfs today. Are you able to get a +6 during the day? It would have been interesting to see what his +6 was yesterday and how much the food raised his numbers.

Thank you for asking...his weight is still the same, on the low side. He is not gaining wt and that does concern me. Back in November, before he was diagnosed with diabetes, he was eating dry food and I think that adds more calories to his diet. I have to remember that he is only eating canned food now and it is not there for him to eat all day like the dry food was. He used to nibble all day on his dry food. And now, he has set times to eat; it has to be confusing to him:(

I know people say it is better to feed at set times, but that did not work for Furball. I free feed her. I know at times it will affect her numbers, but she was starving when I tried to get her to eat at set times and took the food away. Maybe free feeding would work for Yoyo.

Does he act like he is hungry, or do you have to wake him to feed him?
I was just wondering how his feeding schedule is affecting his numbers. I know you have to give him the calories he needs and adjust insulin accordingly. I've also read on here of kitties whose BG goes up because they are stressed due to hunger. Sometimes, it's good to step back and revisit some of the decisions we made when we first started this journey and re-evaluating based on new information. Just some food for thought :)

In the morning, he freely eats a 1/4 can of fancy feast. But before I give him his insulin, I want him to have at least half a can of fancy feast in his belly so then I have to hand feed him the next 1/4 can. Then when an hour has past, +1, I give him the 2nd half of the can which he really does not want. Again, I hand feed him the food which he takes but I know he isn't hungry. If I give him the 2nd half of the can @ +3 or +4 it made his numbers higher at the +4 reading. (I used to feed him that way until I noticed that it was better for his numbers to get the majority of his food into him by +1 or +1.5).
If he wasn't on the thin side, I won't make him eat the 2nd half of the can so early, but I want to get the food into him and I don't want the food to effect his +4 reading. It's funny, because this morning I was thinking of giving him the 2nd half of the can around +3 to see if he was hungrier then. But I didn't want it to effect his +4 count. But his +4 was on the high side anyway. Really- I don't know the answer to feeding Yoyo.

I just went back and reviewed how I used to feed Yoyo back when this started. And it looks like I used to give him food and +2 and +3 and his numbers would go down at his +4 count. Maybe they would have been lower if no food had been given or maybe it has no effect so early in the cycle. Maybe the food really effects him later in the cycle around +5 and so on.... I guess I'll have to try feeding him @+3 and see what happens. But I wonder, will I ever really know how his body metabalizes foods; so many things out of my control with feeding him once on insulin! Some days his numbers goes low and other days his numbers are high with the food being a constant. You would think keeping the food consistent would keep his numbers consistent. But that isn't true at all as we all know!

You are right about that. I was asking because I know you have to feed him extra calories in order to help him gain weight, but those extra calories might mean higher BG numbers. I was wondering if his numbers were higher due to stress if he was hungry, but it looks like that is not the case since you are forced to hand feed him.

As for feeding schedule, who knows what's best. I wish I could free feed like Carla, but Bailey will eat everything at once. She doesn't pace herself at all.
