Our guys got a new toy today and I tested him at +6 and he was 160 so I wasn't worried about a little exercise but...

He freakin loves this toy and has been playing forever with it...running all over the place pouncing and attacking and flipping around...

so I tested him an hour later and he only went down a smidge cause he's been eating plenty.

I'm just wondering if you're already going lower at nadir and do a lot of rigorous exercise for 1.5-2 hours straight...am I playing with fire? I'm just so happy to see him so happy and himself.

Does anyone do a lot of vigorous running around the house type exercise around nadir and had any issues?

Short answer NO. Mild to moderate exercise will help moderate/lower BG levels but vigorous exercise COULD temporarily elevate BG. The reason being, that if the body needs more glucose than is already circulating in the bloodstream to provide the energy needed for vigorous exercise, hormones kick in and cause a release of glucose from liver stores. It's similar to the bouncing phenomenon we are all too familiar with.

That said, watching a kitty get so excited and energized with a new toy is priceless so just enjoy it!

    Thanks!

He finally slowed down and just watched his brother play but there was plenty of food still out and he didn't seem like he needed to eat again and we're going to test again at +8 just to be sure he's level or starting to rise. :D

I'm glad you posted this as I've often wondered about how play can effect BG. We have for the last few years tried to follow the method of hunt/kill/eat, always trying to play before dinner and let our boys catch and drag toys around proudly.

I haven't seen it cause too much of a spike in comparison to days we don't play as much, but ECID.

Out of curiosity, and because I'm a cat toy hoarder, what is it that is striking his fancy? We recently got Gato this cat dancer toy and he is NUTS FOR IT. I love seeing him back to being his playful self!

"We have for the last few years tried to follow the method of hunt/kill/eat, always trying to play before dinner and let our boys catch and drag toys around proudly." That's interesting and makes sense!

The one he just got is this one

We've always had "creatures on a string" type stuff lol and they always liked chasing them but lately our guy seems to have lost interest and with one of the newer ones... out of the blue all of a sudden ... he started acting scared of it. At first it was like adorable "scared kitty" play acting ...our other guy does that all the time lol he does the arch his back and pounce at stuff sideways thing lol but this guy never did so at first it was amusing but then I'm like... you know I think he is legitimately scared of it lol so I just stopped using it. I am so glad he took to this one so well!

I remember those cat dancers but haven't seen them in the stores here in ages. I remember my old guy playing so hard with the cat dancer, he was panting and I would stop the play for fear he'd collapse from all the jumping and rolling around. Simple yet very effective toy for our kitties!

We recently got this one too!!! Our baby Gary loves it so much! And he hardly gets play time as his bigger brothers always interfere and kind of shove him out of the way. Bless his heart, he's so submissive. But with this thing he hires to town!

I keep joking to my partner that it's the ribbon dancer I always wanted from my childhood. :woot: Dating myself a bit with that reference!

A friend of mine hipped me to it... 'best 2 dollars I've ever spent'. After a week if playing with this one I'm inclined to agree!

Exercise is my next goal to work on with my Phoenix. He went from indoor/outdoor kitty to only indoor 4+ years ago. He has a brother who is very into sports but doesn't play with him. He's more of a pensive, relaxed boy. He also is not interested in any games other than catch-the-shoelaces-from-moms-shoes-and-make-them-trip or catch-the-drawstring-from-moms-PJs-and-accidentally-scratch-them.

"He has a brother who is very into sports " lol! we call our one guy our baseball player cause of the way he swats a ping pong ball if you roll it to him lol and the other just an "athlete" cause he's all over the place running and chasing things...or...nothing at all lol. The way he jumps up into the air and comes down elegantly..or not so elegantly sometimes lol he looks like an athlete. This guy is also into shoelaces lol

Our littlest is the sane way! His favorite pasttimes are watching tv, and getting into any hammock he can get his paws on!
