I go camping every year. But this year I have to take my Molly with us. This will be her first time camping. She's an indoor kitty kinda scared to take her with us. But we have no choice where she is diabetic. No one to watch her for us.

Any tips on what to do?

Years ago, I had a cat that I took camping with me. We camped in a tent. Is that what you are doing or are you going in a camper/RV? Our tent had a section separate from the sleeping area where we put a litter box and her food and water. There was a big window on each side of the tent with a flap we could tie up leaving just a screen. The front of the tent had that as well, and that one went all the way to the ground. When we were around the camp site, she usually stayed in the zipped up tent with the flaps up. There was plenty of air flow, and she could see out. If we left the camp site, we took her. I had a harness with a leash, and sometimes I would let her walk around. She was such a good cat to travel with. If I tried this with my current girls, I am sure it would not go over well.

We have an RV I was thinking about. Taking her out in the RV to get use to it. She hates going in the vehicle because it's always a trip to the vet. I thought about getting her a harness or even a crate? maybe a baby gate. But she'll probably jump over that.

I have actually thought about getting an RV to see if I could gradually get the girls used to it like it's just another room in the house so that maybe we could go somewhere and take them without it leading to strokes all around. So, if you have an RV I think taking her out to get in it several times before going camping is a great idea. It would give her a chance to get comfortable with it before it starts moving and before she is confined to it for a long period of time. Getting a harness/leash in advance and getting her used to that and maybe to going for walks outside would also be a good idea, if you want to be able to do any walking with her on your trip. A good carrier or crate is another good idea. I would be scared to try a baby gate. I would want to make sure that she was always 'secured' in some way.

Have you figured out where you can put a litter box and her food an water in your RV?

Do you get shots for her, and are they current? What about flea prevention? She may be exposed to things in the great outdoors that she would not be at home.

Our RV is pretty long. Thought about putting her litter box in the bedroom. Her food in the kitchen maybe.Thought about putting her in the crate while were outside.
Her shots are up to date but never thought about fleas. She's never had fleas before where she's an indoor kitty.

I used to take my diabetic cat camping. We were all happiest in a cabin, but he handled a tent fine. My suggestion would be to test the window screens before you go. If a kitty gets spooked, they can push through a loose screen. It's the first thing I check in a rented cabin.

My cat was super laid back, so we had no issues except for the time he helped himself to a skillet of bacon grease

I’m going to get her use to the camper first. Before we actually go camping. Going to order the tent and a harness for her. I hope she’ll like camping!

Thanks Kris and Sandi for posting the link for the playpen. No, I couldn't order the harness. It said it couldn't be delivered to my City. o_O. I'm going to go to my pet store and see if I can find one there like that.

Before you go, measure Molly....around her neck and around her body directly behind her front legs.

If push comes to shove, you can get a dog harness (specifically an "H" harness)

Ok, That's a good idea I'll measure her.

Is there anything else I should take with me for Molly?

First aid kit? Find out where nearest vet is? Are there ticks where you're going? If so, tweezers for that. HiOoooh, that playpen is to die for. Am much looking forward to pictures; have fun!

Molly was a good kitty camping. Her BG was pretty good, no signs of stress. Just didn’t like the drive home. In her carrier

Here is a fun way I have been getting my boy around when traveling. He loves his stroller so much. I set the top carrier part in my back seat and open the flap so he can jump in and out as he pleases while riding in the car. I have found he likes it better when he can see out the window like a dog lol. I have been trying to decide if I should take my super chill cat tent camping this summer and it sounds like a lot of you have had success. I just saw a guy at a camp ground who allowed his cats to free roam and when he called them they came running right back. I have to say I was pretty impressed. As much as my boy loves me I am pretty sure he would also love to check out what neighbors are eating lol. Happy Summer Travels my Diabetic Cat Friends!

My sister's cat has a stroller and loves it. She takes him to the park in it. He likes to get in it at home, too.

I use the same playpen for when I am traveling to visit friends with my cats, and have to be away from their sight.
It has enough room for my two cats, a little box, a food area, and I put one of their traveling crates inside with a crate pad inside and one on top of the carrier, so they can lay inside or on top if they want to. There is also leftover room to stretch out a bit in the playpen. I think mine is 56" across. I like the way it folds up and goes into a carrying bag.

I'm so glad you took Molly camping... our 3 love going in the RV! Every time we go the kitty cat TV is playing something different.

Our boys watching kitty cat TV in Pocahontas State Park, VA last year.
