So I am still switching over to Lantus. HOWEVER, my soon to be EX vet is being very difficult with a Rx for Lantus.

The PLAN was to switch to Lantus by the end of Prozinc, but it's taking longer and I may have to purchase another bottle of Prozinc just for 2 weeks (if that). :/

That being said, I'm at the end of the bottle, it's time is up and it's not as effective as it once was. My numbers were too high and I've have increased to 2 u.

My question, if I have to start the new bottle before the vet gets their finger out of their butt, what should I start on? I feel 2 units of a fresh bottle will be too much. I looked back, and I was thinking I should start on 1.25.

Curious, how the more experienced in the matter suggest. Can I drop it back that much (from 2u to 1.25u) or is that too drastic?

My vet appointment is Weds morning.

I can’t say how much to drop but I do know for sure a New always bottle seems to indicate a lower dose based on my records. I will probably be making the same switch and I am terrified and I am expecting my vet to be resistant as well. I hope he gets his finger out soon for you as I get the frustration. :bighug:

Learn from my mistake, make sure give yourself AMPLE time to switch. Expect them to give you the run around, and want more tests. :/

I wouldn't recommend dropping the dose that much. As long as the insulin is well cared for, it shouldn't lose all that much efficacy. So maybe drop 0.25. Or 0.5u if you're really feeling like the insulin is off.

I'm so sorry your vet is being so difficult about this! Hopefully they'll get it together soon and give you the prescription. What a pain!

So maybe I will start it at 1.5? I can always raise or lower it if necessary.

Check the supply closet for lantus. Start thread and ask if anyone has some to sell or any left over. You might get some to carry you over. Ask your vet to spread their wings and give it a try. You can always go back.

I have. The problem is it's illegal without a script. I work in the medical field so if I got in bysted for getting Lantus without a prescription I could lose my license. :(

Wondering if your vet took his head out of his butt and gave you the script you needed?

OMG, yes!! They made a big deal about needing to do tests and crap and yet ALL they did was watch my cat's for 15 minutes. Lol. No tests, just talked about Lantus.

However, she did say when I inject Lantus I should leave it in the cat slightly longer and I should use the pen tips??

YAY!! So glad they gave you the script. I got lucky. My vet is writing a script for me without even seeing her based on the SS... he is very impressed so thank you guys for that tool! His dosing recommendation on the other hand... he says start with 1U ONCE a day!! I don’t think that’s right. Also 1U on a U 100 legit dosing ( no conversions) seems microscopic!! I posted in the Lantus forum to start picking their brains and for some reason no one can see my SS. Any thoughts on why that may be?

I don't know anyone who uses the pen tips on the Lantus Pens. The majority of us who use Lantus use the pens as mini vials and draw with a U-100 syringe. Get one's with half unit markings, they make all the world of difference! :woot:. Here's a video I have given to people to understand how to draw from the pen and some important tips:

No idea. It was suggested to start on 1 u but I'm pretty sure it's because he's already on Prozinc. Lol

I know. That's what I said, but she wasn't sure " that'd work" so well. She got her info from a vet website. But I got what I wanted, I wasn't going to argue. She wrote me a vial Rx, but I'm gonna get pens if I can. I already ordered a few so I would not have to wait just in case, but I'm getting more with the script. :)

Well I’m just glad you got the script you needed. I guess you and I will be doing this change thing together... I’m gonna give it another week or so. After yesterday’s crash I’m not sure I wasn’t on to something I just had to travel and drop dose drastically for safety so I’m gonna give it one more college try... I hope you have results with Lantus. I’ll be following your journey and praying for you guys!!!

Yay for the script! I am dying to chime in on the dosing, but it's a big no-no to give Lantus advice in the Prozinc forum. Just know that you can trust the folks over in that forum to guide you through the transition and they will give you sound advice about the starting dose. :)

They can also help you out with the pen/vial issue (pens are awesome, but vials work just fine if that's what you end up with).

And it does take some getting used to on the size of the dose. L's are much more concentrated than Prozinc, so the doses do feel microscopic by comparison. Although when I came back to Prozinc it felt like I was then injecting way too much because the dose was suddenly so much bigger! Change is hard. But in this case, I think it will be really good.

When I get home this weekend, or have more time I'm going to post my plan and get advice. I've read the Stickys so many times, but I know it won't click till I start. Lol

Not quite ready to jump ship. Gonna give PZI one more college try as I felt I was getting somewhere with the food change and the dose. One stinkin lime and I wrecked it cause I had to travel so maybe another week. And .... I won’t tell anyone if you accidentally advise me on dosing for Lantus;)

You can always tag me to pop over to Lantus and say hi though. I can chime in over there, just not here. There are some really great folks over there that will take good care of you both though. Lots of ex-Prozinc users who have gone through this transition themselves.

That's so true. The L forum has way more people, so it's easier to get help over there - you don't have to wait until one of us gets home from work. There are people there nearly 24/7. Also, dosing is sooooooo much easier with the L's. You're going to love how straight forward it is. No guessing and hoping. It's much more science and much less of the "art" of dosing that we deal with over here.

Can y'all tell me why y'all are going to ( or have ) stopped using PZI? Is it because it cost so much?
I had to move and it cost a LOT more here then it did back home! Actually, I can't afford a new bottle. Only have 1/4 left. Have no idea what I'm gonna do

Hi Sherri. You can order prozinc from Chewy for around $115. You enter your vets info and they will contact your vet and ship it to you.

@sherrib I am switching because it's not working for my cat as well. He's too jumpy and he gets high numbers. I'm hoping Lantus will flatten him out.

You can check the supply closet to see if someone has anything.

Most people switch for the same reason Mphair is; it's just not working well for their kitty. @sherrib there was a newer member who sadly lost their kitty but was looking to sell an almost new bottle of Prozinc and some supplies: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/new-bottle-of-pro-zinc-pzi-and-other-supplies.214427/

I don't see an update if it's still available but you can message her to ask. :) Not sure if the $125 or $115 on chewy are any better for you.

My new vet has to okay the RX from chewy and she is insisting she does her own in house curve. My cat also has FLUTD and freaks out at the vets office and especially in the car ride there and FLUTD comes from stress. I spent well over $2000 in Jan & Feb with his last flare up ( wiped out my little saving )
So for now, chewy is out unless I find a new vet ASAP who will do it without an office visit first. No way I can deal w a flare now. ☹️

My new vet won't do it unless I bring him in for a curve. She knows I do my own, but she wants to do it anyway. ( she also said I didn't need to test twice a day......
    Looking for a more supportive/knowledgeable
diabetic vet.My baby also has stress induced FLUID.

@sherrib yes, definitely a new vet. Call around and tell them the situation. I've had to deal with a crappy vet. My very insisted on a curve in house but when I for there they did nothing. Just wanted my time....
