Hello my name is Denice and my Sapphire is 2yrs old and newly diagnosed. We just survived our first 18 hrs of insulin shots. Vet started her on 1unit of Vetsulin/12hrs, would have loved to have started her on Lantus but after the expense of vet visits and glucose testing supplies Vetsulin was the more affordable choice. She is on Fancy Feast classic to begin with and I am transitioning her to Dr. Elseys Clean Protein with no plant based ingredients. After the diagnosis i did have a mini meltdown but I am ready and commited to getting her regulated and maybe back in the show ring. She healthy weight was 15lbs in a matter of 3 wks she was down to 12.4.

Hi and welcome Denice and Sapphire. I'm glad you are committed to learning more about how to treat Sapphire's diabetes and you will find the information and support you need here on the board. She is a beautiful cat and I know you want her to be healthy and feel well.
The Fancy Feast classic pates are low carb and a good diet for sugar cats. There is an excellent website about feline nutrition:
www.catinfo.org that you may want to visit. The DVM who runs the website has also created a wonderful food chart broken down into components (protein, fat, carbs, etc.) of many brands that might be helpful to you.
Many of our U.S. members buy Lantus from Marks Marine Pharmacy in Canada for lower costs. We can tell you more about that if you are interested.
You mentioned glucose testing supplies, Hooray for you! You have ticked off the three basic components of effective feline diabetic care.
Please create your signature so that Sapphire's info is available with your posts. That's the gray text under all our posts. Here's a link to the signature and profile instructions: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/editing-your-signature-profile-and-preferences.130340/
Another thing that will help us help you now that you've started BG testing at home is to set up a spreadsheet like the one we use here. We can all see it and look at it before offering advice:
    http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/fdmb-spreadsheet-instructions.130337/
    http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/understanding-the-spreadsheet-grid.156606/
Please post questions and concerns on the Main Health forum and you also should visit the Vetsulin forum for more information about that insulin.
    Best wishes going forward. :cat:

Thank You for the warm welcome. 3 yrs ago when I adopted an overweight 13 yo Siamese mix I did a lot of research on Feline nutrition to reduce her weight and started her on Fancy Feast and took away the Meow Mix and transitioned to a “premium” dry food. so I am already pretty familiar with Catinfo.org :) Since the I have become more aware of what i put in their bowls. Just never imagined that my 2 yo lanky cat would be the one with FD. I will update my signature asap and make use of the spreadsheet. I want my baby back to her playful self.

Hi Denise and Sapphire and welcome to FDMB. So sorry you have had to come join us but happy that you found us as this is an invaluable resource for parents of extra sweet kitties. Lou has given you some great start up information so just keep asking questions and we'll get you on the road to better days for both you and Sapphire.

Sapphire is stunningly gorgeous! You mentioned showing her.....is she by any chance a Nebelung?

Congrats! I can see how she earned that title....she really is gorgeous and could easily pass for a Nebelung in that photo. I have a feral rescue too....he's a Russian Blue wannabe!:woot:

It is with a heavy heart that tell all of you Sapphire that she crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Thursday, May 9 at about 10:30am. She was very very sick and after a 4 month hard fought battle to get her diabetes stabilized her little body just couldn't do it anymore. I took her in for labs and get her hospitalized bc I felt she was dehydrated and she has not eaten in about 2 days. The vet called me to tell me they could try to get thru the crisis but there were no guarantees she would pull thru. At that point i felt that it was the kindest thing to do was to ease her suffering and let her go. I drove down to the clinic to see her and hold her one last time. She didnt want to held so I just petted her. I told her how wonderful she was and how much joy and laughter she has brought to my life. How she was such a good cat sister to both Buster and Minx. How she gave Minxy a run for the money when she got here and would terrorize her as a baby. How she was a good sport taking the payback form Buster and thru all her treatment. For the past four months she willingly allowed me to prick her ear twice a day to get her glucose tested along w/ insulin shots. I told her that she had touched the lives of so many ppl, family, friends and coworkers and even ppl we didnt even know at the cats shows or where ever i would take her. I told her it was okay to go. I was there in her final moments with her head in my hands. I want the world to remember her at her best. I love her so much and she will always be my Bay-Bee. I want to thank you for your advice and kind words. Naturally I am quite heartbroken but I have no regrets I gave her a great life and had the Wisdom to know she was ready to go. I would update her ss religiously I also added her bs reading on the morning she passed.

@Sapphire Skye Denice, I have just seen this, and it's been a month! My dear, I am so very sorry and I was so saddened and shocked to read. My heart goes out to you, we share your grief. You were working so hard and you did everything you knew to do. Thank you for giving her the ultimate gift of enduring love and helping her to pass peacefully. Peace and comfort, hugging you with virtual arms, and shedding tears for you and that incredibly wonderful beautiful kitty. cat_wings>o

It is much appreciated. She left behind her “little” brother a boisterous 16 lb lean mass of a mini tiger named Buster. He just turned one. I adopted him for her :) Now he needs a playmate so I had to pick myself up and think of his need of more congenial company that my 17 yo cat Minx. I adopted a kitten that when I think about it is Sapphire returning to me. His name is Donatello, and he is as tiny as Sapphire was when I adopted her. It brings tears to my eyes. He looks so funny playing w/ big ole Buster. He is a Blue point (Minx is a siamese mix) lynx (tabby marking like Buster) mitted kitten w/ sapphire blue eyes. Gods works in mysterious way. I feel like Isaac when he was willing to give up Jacob. God gave her back to me...new. He can never replace Sapphire but I see a great deal of her in him. 8DEEC2FC-5BF6-4897-9B66-3690475BE62D.jpeg

Oh Denice, what an adorable little guy! Now that you let the cat out of the bag LOL you are going to have to keep us updated in the Community and Off Topic forum. And Buster and Minx too! Don't be a stranger, just because you aren't treating diabetes doesn't mean you get to leave the family. The furry kids sleeping pic you just posted is priceless. You are helping your heart heal and you are providing a wonderful home to Donatello while doing so.

I expected to bring him home in July but my aunt had a sudden flea outbreak, they sprayed and then it became a serious issue when the fleas in an effort to save themselves latches on to the babies. My aunt has been working nights and my cousin (hm from college) was ill also. So it became a rescue mission. Thankfully I bought pet insurance for both sick and wellness visits for both Buster and Telly when i picked out Telly. He came home w some fleas and an upper respritory infection and took him to the vet soon after. ($275 and no shots yet...ugh!) Good thing ins only has a $100 ded! I did have him quarantined until i was sure the fleas were gone. The boys wanted to play! lol He has helped me heal but Safie is still quite fresh, I know shes around, I find test strips randomly. I know its her telling me she’s there
