Hi all! It's 4:30 am here lol. Willow had a cow-patty poo, which is going to progress to full on diarrhea because she's on antibiotics.
Had 3rd dose of Amoxil 100 mg this evening.

Problem is tomorrow (today!) is 1st day of 3 day (16 HR, we're taking it slow for her) trip from NS to ON.

Short of switching AB which isn't happening because it's Sunday and, stuff...She needs to stay on them because of really bad, prolonged UTI so I don't want to stop.

For S. Boullarddi (sp?) Probiotics....Will they clear up diarrhea while she continues to take AB? As long as I give apart from AB?

Hopefully so, and hope I can find it...

Also, dose of S. Boullarddi? Does Renewlife have it? Or what brand?

    Any other thoughts?

Don't have too much time to research this, so turning to you all!

Thanks so much, with love, Nikki.

    @Bobbie And Bubba

I think it is S. Boullarddi. I know I have some but can't remember why. It was a generic brand I ordered from Amazon but seems to me there was another (better?) one. Hope Bobbie will chime in.

Get some puppy pads (piddle pads)and some baby wipes and lots of paper towels for the carrier/car ride.

Yes, but I'm not sure how much you should give. I buy the Now capsules and divide one capsule into 3 smaller capsules. I hope you can get the diarrhea cleared up for your trip. Sending prayers.

    Here ya go.

    https://www.foodfurlife.com/my-cat-has-diarrhea---what-do-i-do.html#/

For adult cats (defined here as 9 months of age and older):

Give one-quarter of the 250mg / 5 billion CFU capsule every two hours or so. Many cats accept it when mixed into finely ground poached chicken breast / turkey breast / pork loin or meat-only baby food. (Beech Nut, Goya, and Gerber list “meat” and broth or gravy as ingredients. These are fine, they are referring to the water used to cook the meat, and they contain no spices). If your cat does not like the taste of the probiotic, you can syringe after mixing with water. If you are not experienced syringing liquids into your cat, you can use empty #3 gel capsules. Simply fill 10 to 20 of these by transferring the S boulardii from the larger capsules into the smaller ones. These are a size easy to pill your cat. Pill your cat with one #3 capsule filled with S boulardii every two hours or so. For pilling instructions, see How to Pill (Your Cat).

    Brands of S boulardii:

In the U.S. Jarrow is one of the most widely available. It is combined with MOS (mannanoligosaccharides) which improve its efficacy. Florastor is available in many large chain stores, but it contains lactose, which may exacerbate diarrhea in some cats due to the common lactose intolerance.
Walmart has a store brand very similar to Florastor, called Equate but without the lactose. Renew Life, carried by most Whole Foods stores, has two S boulardii products, one with larch arabinogalactan. Buy the one WITHOUT this ingredient. There are many brands of S boulardii available online: anything with just plan S boulardii in capsules of 3 billion CFU to 5 billion CFU will do.

You can click on the pictures to purchase the probiotics from amazon U.S.
In the U.K. and some other countries in Europe, Bioglan is widely available. This contains S boulardii and several bacterial probiotics. The capsules contain 2.5 billion CFU of S boulardii. If you are using Bioglan, be aware that you need to provide twice the dose if following instructions for giving 5 billion CFU capsules.

I have the U.S. Jarrow brand that I've been using, it's probably the best because of the MOS combination. I got mine off Amazon so I'm not sure what stores carry it.

Thank you all! Now to find time between finishing loading, cleaning, packing Willow's stuff (and you guys know what that entails) to try to find some!

Do I just give for cow patties &pudding poo or only for full on diarrhea?

And will they work if I continue the AB as well, and just separate the two timing wise?

And I'll remove the clearlax and see if she can still handle lactulose.

    You all are lifesavers!!!

    Thanks again, with love, nikki

    Ok she's officially at liquipoo.
Does anyone know if I can continue the Amoxil that's causing the diarrhea, and the S boullarddi still work? Thanks!

From what I remember from the site, it should still be effective as long as you give a couple hours between administration.

Hi Nikki, I hope this helps. Anytime Leo's had pudding poo, I've given him about a teaspoon of pure pumpkin (not pie filling) and it's always worked very quickly. Wishing you tons of luck! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Another suggestion in addition to the pure pumpkin, Slippery Elm Bark is also supposed to help with diarrhea. When Sebastian was having diarrhea I did a combination of all three, s.boulardii and SEB mixed into some pumpkin. It didn't actually help since the diarrhea was a result of a food allergy from the beef we had switched him too, but it didn't make anything worse.

If she needs the AB, I would not stop the AB. It's best to give a probiotic while you are giving an AB to help prevent diarrhea. I'd give the probiotic the whole time you are giving the AB. You may need to continue the probiotic a couple of days after the AB is finished too.

Every time Ti-Mousse was on AB, I gave probiotic before, during and after for a while! Good luck !!
I used Renew Life Ultimate Flora and also tried Natural Factors Ultimate Protec !

Yes Renew life has it. Another thing is wait until you get where you are going before continuing the AB. A few hours won't make a difference.

This might help (from the IBD Kitties website): Probiotics.
About half-way down the page you'll find EMERGENCY “STOP DIARRHEA” DOSING INSTRUCTIONS.

The only problem with the MOS added is that it is very bitter and most cats won’t tolerate it in their food.

The brand I use is Florastor. You can get it at CVS. it can be purchased cheaper on Amazon but you need it now. I can put it undetected in Bubba’s food.

I see where Jill have giving you the emergency stop diarrhea directions . It has always worked like a charm for me.

The Walmart Brand , Equate, is comparable to the Florastor , but I have not tried it.

I wouldn't continue lactulose while kitty has diarrhea. It will just add to the problem if the diarrhea is AB induced.

Hi everyone, we're at the hotel after the first leg of our trip, and Willow did great :)
We regularly use Renew Ultimate probiotic, and are keeping her on that during this whole episode along with the new S boulardii and Antibiotic.
Picked up Renew brand S boulardii today, and she takes it in her meals no problem. Giving 1/8 capsule every 2 or so hours. Renew is 10 Billion CFU/capsule.
I don't want to stop the lactulose because the vet said as long as she's on cisapride, she also has to take the lactulose. I'm weaning her off cisapride, so we'll see how things go, but I'll definitely stop if diarrhea continues.
I can't put her back on SEB because she's just been diagnosed with hypercalcemia (lactulose isn't good for that either, so will be trying to up the clearlax and decrease the lactulose soon, but can only do so much at a time lol.)
She only had the two poops over last night and this morning, so hopefully it'll be controlled sooner rather than later.
We should own stock in puppy pee pads! And hopefully it doesn't come to diapers, but thanks for the link :)

The question: the foodfurlife site says 1/4 of a 5 Billion CFU capsule every 2 hours, but from what I get from the https://www.ibdkitties.net/supplements/probiotics/ link , it says to *fill* #3 capsules from a 5 Billion CFU capsule and use one every 2 hours or so.

My capsules are 10 Billion CFU, so I'm using 1/8 of a capsule as per foodfurlife. It fills my #3 capsule around 1/4 full.
According to the ibdkitties site dosing recommendation, my #3 capsule should be 1/2 full.

Did I misunderstand something? Should I up the dose I'm giving? Right now I'm waiting (not too eagerly) for her next poop to see how it is....

Thank you all! You are seriously the most consistently helpful bunch of people I've ever met :)

    With love, Nikki

    I. used the ReNew Life S. boulardi when Gizmo's IBD was symptomatic. I started with 1/4 of a capsule x2 per day. I'd give it a day or two to see how it's working and either give more or less depending on your results.

Maybe try doubling the amount of Renew since it is 1/2 the amount of the Florastor.

Also, try some all meat baby food for her for a few days to help the digestive system. It is nice and bland and easier for her to digest .

Thanks all! Willow only had one poo today, and it was a pudding/cow patty as opposed to liquipoo, so that's a start! She had a good day traveling (slept, because she didn't last night lol) and is settled in for hopefully the whole night. If the stool doesn't firm I'll increase the S. boulardii a bit more.
    With love, Nikki
