Jerry had a very normal day of blues yesterday and then PANIC at +5 last night. He was fine, running a bit high and wham he wakes up from a nap on the couch jumps down and started wobbling all over the place. He seemed scared and disoriented. I of course panic with a capital P and instead of testing and handling as I should of I go straight to the HC gravy with a drop of Karo. Only after he had eaten did I think of testing DUH!!:banghead:. I haven't felt like that since I got my first low, chicken without a head would be a good description with pounding heart and shakes. He scared the living daylights out of me. Once he got the food on board he was just fine. You'd think I would know better at this point but NO!! Anyway all's well that ends well.

This morning I'm sure he is on a bit of a bounce.

Hope everyone is having a lovely day and that the Kitties are all on the beach or surfing.:)

Oh dear, sorry you were so scared last night. Hugs to little Jerry and an extra one for you for your fright in the night. :bighug::cat: , :bighug:

    Dierdre,
I don't think your reaction to go to HC instead of testing was wrong at all. You saw what are hypo symptoms. Hugs to you, because I know how scary that had to have been. After time to think more, yes you could have tested in less than a minute, but in my opinion you did right!

You know it...less than a minute. I now have no idea how low (if he was low at all) he was. This is the first time he's shown me any symptoms, every other time he's been low he seemed just fine and it was only testing that showed me.

Hey, it's normal to react! And now I'm sure with clear-headedness that you'll remember next time you see symptoms to grab a BG test first and then treat accordingly. It's really great to have that information in your arsenal...that way you'll know - in case he starts to approach those numbers again - what to do to head it off. We all learn by our mistakes.

Just having your kit ready with HC/MC, Karo, extra test strips, etc. will make you feel better. I keep mine ready to go at all times. I found out one more tidbit during one of those busy, late night testing times - get an extra battery or two to keep on hand for your meter. Heck, I even bought an extra new meter (the one where you don't pull the tape away from the battery - UNLESS you need it)...it'll help you handle the situation - next time- just like a pro. Being prepared helps so much!

Oh my kit is always stocked and ready. This was not my first low. Just the first where he was showing classic symptoms. I knew he was dropping so I stayed up to keep an eye on him and he even had a snack at +4 so I really wasn't expecting the drama.

How long after the HC gravy and drop of Karo did you test him?
One other thought from a human D perspective.
Symptoms of a hypo don't always show at the same low numbers. I have had symptoms, or feelings from 45 to 70, and I have NOT had symptoms in those same numbers.

About 4 minutes till I tested and he was 79 so not low at all. This cat has been down in the 30's and was just hungry. It was just very weird. I'm just going to put it down as an experience.:)

I totally understand that panic and the thought to get the HC in him first but, if it helps you any, I doubt very seriously that it was low numbers related. If you tested four mins after giving karo and he was 79, he wasn’t at lower numbers. It takes 15 mins for even karo to effect the BG.

Honest opinion here: I would use the three drops between 40-50, one drop below 40, or one week in normal numbers as reduction parameters unless you have a cycle where you are having to feed HC and test a lot to keep him above 40. Translating that further, I wouldn’t have dropped his dose back from 0.5u and I’m suspicious that you’ll have to go back up to it.

The first couple of cycles you saw green after the reduction were likely depot. And it’s a stretch, but last night might have been. I’d give him a few more cycles at 0.25u and reassess.

Glad everyone is ok and your heart beat has returned to normal.:)

My Ravan has dropped into the 30's & showed no signs at all. Now if he goes low during the night he wakes me up! I just give him 7% carb food The only time I ever gave Karo is when he wouldn't come up for over an hour on med carb.

Last year I was watching TV in the evening. Ravan was very calm next to me. Suddenly he jumped off the couch & looked confused ,but then he started moving his head back & forth an salivating. Then he began running in a circle. I knew it was a seizure. I grabbed him & held him tight till it stopped. It lasted about 2 mins.

That was the first one. He's had 3 more since then I give him Charlottes Web CBD OIl & the seizures are better. Hasn't had but one in a few months.

    Hope Jerry is OK.

Well you've certainly given me something to think about. It was very weird. I picked him up and he was really scared. I wasn't thinking straight as he normally doesn't show symptons when low.:bighug:

I understand. I was convinced, when I finally got my brain to function and tested, that he would be low but the 79 confused me more. I'm still puzzled. So you think I decreased the dose too soon heh? Will I ever get this right?
My nerves took a while to settle down and tbh I was a little uptight about getting some sleep. Today all seems to be normal again. Thanks as always Marje.:)

It’s not that I think you decreased too soon and time will tell us. But his needs have been up and down a bit and he wasn’t looking as great on 0.5u as I would have liked for him to before he earned a reduction. The longer we can safely keep them at a dose where they are seeing nice green nadirs and improving, the better.

It’s all a learning process so we learn and move on; take the info forward with you but don’t think you made a mistake. I think of it as a scientific hypothesis that we disproved :):)

    You’re always welcome!!
