Hello there my kitty just went in for her 3d curve at the vet and my vet and i are not agreeing on treatment plan. He is telling me dont bother to test her ( i go against his advice and test anyway she was 124 last night on AT) what would of happened if i had given her 3.u at 124?. Hes also telling me never adjust the dose. My cats diet will never be regulated because shes indoor outdoor. (Ive tried keeping her in but shes just not happy) I dont feel comfortable not testing what if her level is normal and i still give the shot?. I just cant live with myself if i intentionally hurt my kitty. I am getting a new vet and doing my own curves at home. Since we cant agree on the treatment plan. I understand every dr will have a different method of treating but i want whats best for my kitty and not putting her in danger by overdosing her. We use prozinc 3u & Aphatrac my spreadsheet is in my signature.

Hopefully, you will find a vet that is willing to work with you. You are absolutely right about home testing!

Absolutely home test. I was one who didn't know better with my 1st kitty. I listened to vet. He wasn't against it but didn't advocate it either. I learned the hard way during a hypo at night when all vets are closed. Thank God for FDMB that night.

some of us have been able to talk to our vets and basically educate them in areas they know little about, others just sit there quietly, disagree silently with vet, just smile and maybe nod, and do what is really best for the cats -- in that case you are the boss, you hold the tools, you know your cat far better than any vet ever will

Ask the vet if he'd give insulin to a baby without first making sure it was safe to do so. If he still won't accept that testing is necessary for both Mittens' safety and your sanity. I'd also ask if he is going to be immediately available 24 hours a day to help if you follow his rules and Mittens's BG drops too low. If that doesn't make him think twice about his bad advice then it's time to find another vet.

It's unbelievable the number of vets who say don't bother with testing. I've been to three vets in the last year; they've all basically said that if I must test, doing a curve once a week or so is ok. The first one (at the time of his diagnosis, before we knew about the Acro) said to just bring him in for a weight check once every couple weeks or so. Ugh. After seeing all the hypos and near-hypos here on the boards, and having a couple of close calls myself, it makes me angry that vets think it's ok to not test.

Good on you for looking for a new vet. Vets are smart but they're not specialists; they should be open to learning about new things. My vet told me I couldn't use Fancy Feast because she wouldn't get regulated on it so I offered to show her the facts otherwise. Luckily she embraced it, did her own research, admitted she was wrong and has since taken a hands-off approach and allowed me to provide her the info. Find a vet like that and you'll be golden.
