    About Me
My name is Joe and I live outside of Youngstown, Ohio with my wife and 4 cats. I work full time for an environmental engineering consulting company in the finance department. In my free time, I am an absolute nerd - comics, video games, movies, card games...all of that. My wife and I also enjoy travelling and usually wind up going to New Orleans almost every year.

    My Cats
    • Boots, neutered male tuxedo, born approx. 2006, Dx with DM 11/3/2017
    • Ash and Angel, neutered male and spayed female short-haired (brother and sister from the same litter), born 2010
    • Gidget, spayed female calico, born 2014
    Feeding
Each cat gets 1/2 of a 5.5oz can of Friskies pate in the AM and PM. All dry food and treats have been removed from their diet. Freeze-dried meats have not been a popular treat, so I am now giving all-natural turkey as a treat. All cats are very happy with this.

    Past Health Issues
Boots had gone through PU surgery in 2013 due to repeated urethral blockages. Since then, he was put on Royal Canin SO dry food to munch on during the day to prevent crystals from forming in his urine, and he has not had any further issues. Since the DM Dx, this has been removed from his diet. No other cats have had any past issues, and none of them are on any other medications.

    Complications from Diabetes
So far Boots' only symptoms have been increased hunger, eating, and water consumption while losing weight. Other than the high BG levels, of course. There has also been some muscle mass loss, but that appears to be reversing already. No other issues have been noticed. His coat is still full and shiny, eyes still bright and alert, and he has not displayed any trouble getting around or using the litterbox.

Treatment and Testing (as of 11/21/2017)
Boots currently gets 2 units of Lantus twice per day. We are home-testing with an Alpha Trak 2 meter. Tests are usually done before each feeding and approx. 6 hours after each feeding. However, we have so far chosen to do it with a few days of separation after a testing day because he is not tolerating getting tested very well, and we're trying to manage his stress to make sure readings are accurate.
