    Hi everyone,
I have not posted for a very long time but look in every now and then. Lots of new kitties and some familiar kitties.
Even us old timers need a little help every now and then.

For those that don't know Putty he is 10 years old and has been a diabetic since he was 5 years old. He has been doing very well but as of late he is throwing me for a loop.

His dose in the last year and a half has gone from a fat 1.0 unit to a fat 0.5 and after today he may be on 0.3. I am a little concerned because yesterday he was in the 40's a good part of the day and after 4 small spoonfuls of high carb he dipped to 25. I gave him a drop of Karo syrup for the first time since he was dx. It took all afternoon to get him up. Last night at his evening shot he was 250 which was not much of a bounce considering he was so low.

Tonight at his evening shot he was 180 At +4 he was 103 and just now at +6 he was back down to 30. Usually he does not go low until later in the cycle so again I gave him a drop of Karo with high carb.

He was just at the vets last week and he is fine. He had bloodwork in April and I had the vet test his thyroid to make sure that was not causing the need for less insulin.

So my question is where do I go from here. Yesterday his dose was a half unit before the 25. I lowered it to a skinny half. He has not been on this low of a dose for over 5 years. With a 30 tonight I would like some input on dose??

Oh and please don't even attempt to look at our spreadsheet. I messed it up and I don't think the link will even work. Someday if some nice person with some expertise would like to help me straighten it out I would appreciate it. ohmygod_smile

    Miriam!!!

Great to see you and Officer Putty and may I say...WOW!!!

I think with that 25, we all would have suggested you take a full reduction of .25u instead of just shaving. That low number today was probably depot from the .5u. It would really be worth a try to take him to .25u and see if he can hold it.

BUT....of course, you know him best, you are very experienced and, since the low number today was very likely depot, you could see what he does with the shave. This is aggressive and not something we would recommend to anyone but the most experienced of caregivers who really know their cat. But without seeing a SS to see whether he has been holding or failing reductions, I think we'd have to leave it to your best judgement.

I can help you with your SS. Just PM me :D

    GO PUTTY!

Thank you Marge. I think I will try him at the .25 and see what he does. I just want to get him to a good place because we will be going on vacation in 3 and a half weeks and don't want to worry about him.

He will be staying with my mom. The vet tech I have been using for 3 years will be going to my mom's to test and give him insulin. Of course I will still worry about him because I will not be able to be in contact with them like I usually am when we are away. We will be in Australia.....a little far from home.

Hi Miriam - so awesome to hear from you! And WOW on Putty! The boy is on a mission. GOOOOOO PUTTY! ECID, and you know Putty best, have done great with him. I believe that the recommendation is to take a full .25 reduction, but I too think that you know whether or nor he can hold reductions well, or if a skinny is better. I think too that tonight there was a little shed action involved, hence that 30. Just imho.

Wishing you much luck. Well done Officer Putty!

I know, after all this time, the reductions are nailbite_smile because you want to keep the momentum going.

Australia! How great that you are getting away. Maybe you can get him to a nice dose that will let him flatten out (well...he "could" stop bouncing  ;-)

So we will all be watching to see what he does with .25u. Paws crossed!

Marge we won that trip on the Ellen show when we were in LA last January. I still cannot believe it....I don't know how I am going to get through 20 hours of flying time.

So .25 it is..hopefully the Putster will hold this dose. cat_pet_icon

    Hi Michelle...thanks for stopping by.

Nice to see you Miriam :YMHUG: and Putty cat_pet_icon and Congratulations on the dose reduction :D and the winning of the trip ;-) I agree with taking the full .25 reduction. Good luck with the new dose. I'm leaving in 3 and 1/2 weeks too, but J.D. is coming with me. Maybe, you could give your mom access to FDMB, so we can be here for her, should she have a question.

I hope you have a good trip.

Hey, Miriam!! Great to hear from you. How exciting about the trip.

One thought for when you're traveling -- have you considered dropping the dose to 0.1u? I suspect you remember that Gabby won't let anyone but me test. I reduce her dose when I travel as a measure of safety.

The link to your SS is missing what you want to name the link: what you name the link goes here

    Hi Sienne,

Thanks for your reply. I will see how Putty does on .25 and yes will reduce more when I am away. The vet tech can test but it will only be at shot times so I really don't want him to have any opportunity to go low.
I myself have never had to measure that small of a dose so I will have to practice doing it myself before I show the vet tech.

I deleted the link to my SS because it is so messed up. I really want to get it back so I can look at it myself. A project for this week!

Thanks again for everyone's input and making us "old timers" feel welcome again.

    hi Miriam! Hi Putty!

you're planning to monitor like crazy for a while, right? 25 is serious stuff, especially if you had a hard time bringing him up, and needs a serious reduction. Even at a teeny dose, the depot can make things interesting, so if I were you I would glue myself to Putty's ear for a little while (sorry Putster!). Maybe insulin won't be an issue in 3 weeks (anti-jinx).

It's hard to believe Putty is all grown up now! 10 years old, wow.

    Hi Miriam,
Great to hear from you and to hear how well Officer Putty is doing. I hope your new dose will work for him and that he will surf in nice, stable upper greens while you're away. Have a grand trip!
