B.K. has now gone ahead to the Rainbow Bridge. He was 20-years old, and he lived the last fifteen years of his life with diabetes.

I will always love you, and miss you terribly...

    (((Jana))),

I'm so sorry to hear that your beautiful B.K. has passed.
I hope the wonderful memories you have of him will soon help to lighten your sadness.

Newcomers to this forum sometimes ask if their cat will die as a result of being diabetic. We tell them that - with love and care -a diabetic cat can live a normal life span. B.K. has been a phenomenal example of that - thanks to your love and care, Jana.

Will be holding you and B.K.in my thoughts,

    Best wishes to you,

    Elizabeth x

I am so sorry to see this - but wow - 20 years old and 15 of those years with diabetes - that certainly is a wonderful tribute to your loving care. I thought I was doing well with Dude living with it for 8 years - but 15 is unbelievable. You gave him so many more years than he would have had with anyone else - and so much love. What a beautiful story of love and caring.

It's never long enough, is it? Never is.

My heart goes out to you in your sadness - we grow so accustomed to their presence and the bond of a special needs kitty is so very special - our lives seem empty without them. One of the hardest things for me was waking every morning thinking I should check Dude and give him his shot - and I think that's one of the times we miss them the most when we've have that closeness for so long.

I'm hoping that the wonderful life you shared with him will give you daily memories of the good times - the love - and now he is free and young and has joined all of our other "extra sweet" kitties that we all loved so much.

Again, I am so sorry. Sending you many comforting hugs and prayers.

I am so very sorry about your sweet boy B.K. He is now healthy at the Bridge where I am sure he received a standing ovation upon his arrival for living 20 amazing years with 15 of them as an Sugar Boy. He is now basking in his popularity as the 'wise elder' and those that went to the Bridge before him are gathering around him for stories of how you helped him to have so many phenomenal years! You also deserve both a hug and applause for what you accomplished for B.K. - what you did together!

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers.

This is a picture of B.K., taken two months ago.

I've been trying to think what to say about B.K., and what I wanted people to remember about him. I thought about telling some of the funny stories he played no small part in, but truthfully, I'm just not up to that, yet. Then, as I was re-reading some of your posts, I received a card from his vet; she referred to him as the "venerable B.K.," and went on to say how much she had learned from him and how much she will miss him. I knew then what I wanted to say, and it's this: Never give up on your super sweet kitties or yourself! Our sweet fur-people are remarkably resilient (probably more so than any of us), and are willing to tolerate us and what we have to do in the name of this disease unconditionally. I know how overwhelming this can all seem sometimes, but you and your kitty can get through it

When B.K. was diagnosed, I'd never even heard of feline diabetes. My learning curve was steep. How steep? One day I found him laying in his litter box drooling; he'd never behaved that way, so I called the vet's office. Unfortunately, his regular vet was out that day, so another vet told me that cats drool sometimes for basically no reason and I shouldn't worry, so I did nothing. I'll never know how B.K. survived a hypo without any treatment or assistance from me, but he did. He and I made it through changes in insulin, dentals, hectic schedules, vacations, boarding, and all the usual cat stuff that happens to all of us every day.

I'd also like to think that, in the course of caring for him all these years, B.K. did his part in helping educate vets and vet techs regarding feline diabetes.

Lastly, I want you (especially the newbies) to know that B.K. passed from a stroke that was likely a result of age and had nothing to do with his diabetes. The day he left, he'd been outside climbing trees, visiting with his BFF's (human and feline), and had antagonized at least one large dog. He was happy and not at all debilitated by diabetes. I wish the same for all of you.

I'm so sorry! We had to let our Tiger (19 1/2 yrs old) go free in early November--he lived for 8 years as a diabetic , on and off insulin 3 times, diet controlled for several years. He will for sure be on the welcoming committee at the Bridge for your precious B K. After all, the orinches like to stick together sometimes!

I write this with tears down my face for your loss. Like you and many other folks, I've been there, too, and it hurts so much. I am new to this website for only one week now, Amos was just diagnosed, and your story gives me such hope that I can give him many years more, like your Beautiful Boy, with the proper care and education about feline diabetes. God be with you, and thank you for your words of encouragement.
