I have been rescued and my heart has been claimed

  1. I wasn't really sure where to post this. It isn't a "health issue", but I wanted to make sure that people would see it.

On my birthday, my ex-wife asked if she could take me out for dinner. Yeah, it's a weird dynamic. We got divorced last December after a two year "estrangement", but we remain very close friends, and we still work together. Anyway, she had been doing volunteer work at a place called "Palmetto Animal League" which is a no kill shelter and adoption center. I asked her if instead of just dinner, if she would take me there. I wanted to donate food, litter, and other "cat stuff" that had been Bob's and Mullet's but nearly new. She thought that would be a great idea, so that's how I spent my birthday.

And it was such a big help to me. They have over 90 kitties up for adoption. And I met half of them that day. It was two hours of nothing but "healing". I had cats crawling all around and all over me.

So I get home, and the next day I go to their website. And I am completely overwhelmed. On the way home, my ex looked at me and said simply "Carl, you need another cat". She was right. I had not been "catless" for 35 years. And the last "new kitty" I had gotten was Bob and Lillian 13 years ago. So I'm looking at the site, and remembering some of them who had left a "special impression", and all I can think is "how do I pick one? The right one? Too many of them seemed to pick me. How do I know???" I was overwhelmed.

And I was also trying to answer "what kind of kitty do I want or need right now?" What I came up with was "I need a kitty who isn't sick. I need a kitty who isn't elderly. I just need a kitty to love that loves me back that I can have a nice normal relationship with." I wanted an adult, female, healthy kitty who just needed a home.

Flash forward to this past Sunday -
I get to work at noon, and I'm working in the campground. I walk into the store in the campground which my ex is the manager of. And I see a lady I haven't seen in months, Samantha, who is here to talk to Paula about selling some of her custom made jewelry. Samantha used to work here at our Nature Center, and she's one of our most active "Turtle Volunteers". Besides making custom jewelry, she also works at a local vet clinic. And Samantha doesn't know that I lost Bob and I'm looking for a new kitty. So out of the blue, we're just chatting, and she mentions this kitty who is their "clinic cat". Her name is Polly, and she's been there for 6 months. They think she's 4-5 years old, but not sure. They only know that she was turned in to the Humane Association by a local family after they found her abandoned in an apartment recently vacated. Her name was given to her by the clinic staff, because she was "Jane Doe Kitty" when they got her. They chose Polly because she is "polydactyl". She's a "Hemmingway Kitty". Samantha is describing this kitty, and all I can think of is "wow, this sounds like the kitty I've been looking for?" So she gives me a website address where I can see and read about Polly.

Here's the summary on Polly -
    She's poydactyle.
She's a black and white tux.
She is shy and needs to be an "only".
She is around 5 years old.

On the website, I see that I have to fill out an application to foster or adopt, so I figure, I might as well fill it out just in case. I figured it would be days before I heard back.

About two hours later, I got a reply email from their "cat advocate". It wasn't just a standard "we got your application" email. It was almost as long as this post is right now. ;-)

And the woman who responded told me what she knew about Polly's history and personality, and she'd be thrilled if I were interested in Polly. No pressure, take her home for a couple of weeks as a foster to see how things worked out. I'm blown away not only by the content of the email, but by the fact that she responded so quickly, and on a Sunday! This is a person who loves and is devoted to her job and her kitties.

So I send her a reply, saying that if possible, I'd like to go Monday morning and meet Polly? She said "absolutely, you can do that".

    So...

Yesterday, I drove to the clinic. I knew what to expect, because I'd seen her pics on the website. So I walk in the door, and right next to the door there's a chair, and right next to the chair is this two story "condo". Living room and dining area up top, and restroom below. And there's this little beautiful girl sitting in her bed looking at the door saying "wassup? Are you Carl?" I melted on the spot. OMG. So I sit in the chair, and reach my fingers in the cage, and get a "head bump hello". She doesn't make a sound, just looks at me. So I talk to her, and the lady behind the counter said "can I help you?" I introduced myself, and she said "oh yes, we heard you were coming to meet Polly. You can take her out if you want to." And I said "No that's okay, I'd will let her come to me".

So I open the door of the condo, but I don't intrude on her space. She gets up, arches her back, and bumps my hand.
"Polly, I'm Carl. Would it be okay to pick you up?"
Polly says "Duh, isn't that sort of the reason why you're here?"

So I pick up this dainty little gorgeous girl. Instantly the paws and extra toes go up to my shoulder, and she buries her head in my neck. And the only sound in the entire world at that point was "Prrrrrrrrrrrrrr". And then the moment was broken when a guy walks in with a tripod German Shepherd (who was also beautiful in spite of being a drooler), closes the door too loudly, and Polly says "OK, gotta go back in my house!" and jumps back in her bed.

I spent a half hour with her. I told her all about Bob and Mullet, and told her I knew a great place for her to spend furever if she was interested. She seemed interested. And she showed me her extra toes on the front feet. And she let me pet her and hold her feet. Then she demonstrated that if you pet her long enough, she will show you her belly. And even let you rub it! I haven't had a "belly kitty" in decades. Mullet would eat your hand if you touched his belly. And Bob only permitted it when he was asleep. All I got from Polly was "yes, it is quite the pretty belly, isn't it???"

Polly is teeny. She could have rode Bob's back and he might not have even noticed. I'm guessing 8 pounds? That's half of Bob. But she doesn't feel "skinny". I guess that's what "normal" feels like? Her fur is dense and silky, sort of "gooshy".

On their site, it says she needs to be an only. She's okay with people once she warms up to them. But shies away from other cats or dogs. She has the ability to roam the clinic before they open or after they close, but she stays in her condo by choice, and won't come out if any dogs or cats are visible. Which is fine with me. She's going to be an "only" here.

They have her listed as a "special needs" kitty. I wondered why? It just says she needs to be an only, and she has extra toes. Apparently extra toes are an issue to some adopters? I'm thinking "how cool are extra toes???" That's a bonus!

So I talked to the staff, and I told them that I definitely want to bring Polly home. But I can't do so until Wednesday morning. I need to get the house and a room set up for her. I need to make sure she doesn't sense "other kitties" when she comes in the door. And I have to go out of town this evening for several hours and I didn't want to bring her home today and have her "alone" for five or six hours in a new and strange environment.

So tomorrow morning, I will go sign adoption papers, and she will be micro-chipped. Screw the "foster" waiting period. I'm "in". I have faith that she feels the same way, so what's the point in a "trial period"?

I am not sure if she will remain "Polly". I like the name, but if she tells me her "real name" which is unknown to anyone besides her, I will call her what she wants to be called. But for now, it will be Polly.

Here are some pics of her. All I can keep asking myself is "How in the world could anyone have walked away from that face and leave her in an empty apartment to fend for herself?" What if someone hadn't found her? This is the same thing that happened to Boots thirty years ago, when my ex found her in a vacated apartment with three kittens after three days with no food, and no water except the toilet bowl. What the hell is wrong with people?

So, everyone, say "Hi" to Polly!

I will post more pics once I get her home and settled. :D

    What a beauty!
I am so happy for you Carl. Your tale is very very similar to mine and I really relate to every word. It is just amazing how a "new" kitty can heal our hearts just when we are at our lowest, but it does have to be the "right" one. I am so glad you and Polly have found each other and I know you will be just as close as my Sapphire and I are. She came to me a mere ten days after I found myself cat-less and utterly miserable. Some people feel it is heartless to adopt a new kitty soon after a loss, but why not, when they bring so much joy. It doesn't mean we ever forget those we have shared our life with before.
May you have many happy healthy years together.

Oh, Carl, this brings tears to my eyes!!!

I could not be more thrilled for you. :D :D :D

Diana (Diana and Tom) has said how her new kitty, Sapphire, healed her heart. I know it to be true because I know Diana and have witnessed the effect on her of having Sapphire in her life. And Carl, I can feel it in my bones that Polly will do for you what Sapphire has done for Diana.

Welcome to you, dear Polly. May your life be full of joy, and may you be the bringer of joy to the one that loves you best.

Oh Carl.....I am so happy for you. I knew you would not be kitty-less for very long. Bob and Mullet picked her out especially for you. :D :D :D

I loved your 'tail' of how you found her. She is beautiful and I know she will be so happy with you. You are a super fur-daddy.

My daughter & son-in-law have a Polydact kitty named Gizmo. I love his paws. Wish I had one of those....hmmm...maybe someday.

I am anxiously awaiting to follow your posts and seeing pics.

Carl, that's wonderful :D I was just looking at your signature when you posted in my condo today and thinking it was so wrong for you to not have a cat. Now you will even have extra toes in the house! Do post and tell us about Polly as soon as she comes home. I am so glad you rescued each other.

Just smiling ear to ear. Oh pretty Polly you have only the slightest of clues of how softly you landed.

Carl, better start baby proofing you gots a girl with thumbs! :) and yes most Hemmingway's know how to use them. Our Hemmingway Patches is affectionately know as Patches the Paw because there isn't a door, drawer or pull tab can he can't open lol

Congrats on the new baby but don't be too sure she'll stay an only. She just hasn't met anyone worthy of living with her yet. ;-)

Oh, I'm so happy for both you and Polly! I'm doing the Dance of Joy! I never believed in fate until my first cat owned me and I was simply reminded of it again when Michelangelo came home to stay. She will be well-loved and well-cared for. :D

Carl's got a new heart companion, a beautiful tuxie named Polly. Congratulations to the both of you. She certainly quickly wormed her way into your heart.

I'm one of those people that believe strongly, that even though we have lost one kitty in our lives, there will be another kitty to come along and help to soften the blow to our hearts. Wink helped me with the loss of one of my other kitties. I was only going to foster him for a month, to see how things went. Well, that was 10 months ago, and he may technically be a foster, but he has wormed his way into my heart and helped it heal.

I kept reading your post and screaming for pictures, and you obliged and gave us some pictures. Thank you.

Darn good thing you did post some pictures, or we would be hounding you for some. ;-)

Thats a great story -it sounds like she picked you! And she needs you as much as you need her! I believe the best tribute to your prior cat is a new one because it shows how much you loved having Bob that you wanted another kitty. Bob would be happy for you!

She is a very pretty cat - pretty polly!

I can't believe people sometimes. My rabbit Bonnie was abandoned like that - alone, pregnant in an apartment when the owners moved. The supervisor found her. I assume the owners took the male with them. Then of course the humane society managed to get new owners for the kittens but not Bonnie. Anyway she found her forever home with us.

Hi Carl! I was so sorry to hear about Bob, my condolences. I'm sorry I didn't see the post when it happened to offer my sympathy. But I'm so happy to hear of your new baby girl! What a beauty. I don't understand how people can do that to animals either leaving them like that  I can't wait to see more pictures and read stories about her :D :D

  21. I got another email from the HA person. Polly will be chipped and ready around 11 am. Me too, except I won't be chipped.

And she sent me two more pics! These look like "home pics" probably from her weekends where she brought Polly home. The others were taken by a pro photographer that takes pics for them....something I might consider volunteering for...

  34. OK, so things went without a hitch this morning. Polly chatted a little on the way home, but she's got a very "girly" meow. ;-)

Once we got here, I placed the carrier in "her" room, opened the door, and she spent the next two hours exploring. I think she checked out every square foot of the house.

Used the LB fairly soon, so happy she knows where that business gets taken care of!

I made sure not to crowd her, and waited until she came to me. It took about two hours. Not the greatest timing....note to self....close bathroom door....

Then she discovered her tower and her window to where the wild things are (see pics below).

And she's a fan of a catnip mouse. And she has quite a purr-motor. And she plays like a kitten. In fact, she's not much larger than a kitten. Her current weight is 7 lb, 12 oz. She gained a pound over the past six months she's been in the vet clinic. The vet tech is like "if you pick her up and feel she's a little plump.....". I laughed out loud. I said "I'm sure you get to see big kitties fairly often, but Bob once weighed 22 pounds. That was plump!"

The only thing Polly isn't good with yet is the "house noises". Heater kicking on and off, freezer making freezer noises, pine cones hitting the roof. I'm guessing she'll become immune to them like I am.

She's been snuggly, but just in short bursts. Likes head-bumping, that's for sure. I'm guessing she'll crash and burn at some time tonight once she picks a "spot". I got her a cat bed, but she hasn't been in it yet. I suppose I haven't put it in the right place yet.

Anybody know the carb content for Meow Mix "Pate Toppers?" They sent me home with what was left of her bag of Purina One Kitty Krack, but I'm thinking the raccoons might be getting a snack one night soon. I gave her the MM chicken, about 2 oz of it, and she was a big fan. Clean Plate Club member.

So, here is Polly enjoying a moment in the sun - quality isn't that good. They are "phone pics".

Such a cutie.. and those feet are fantastic. an extra toe is a bonus for sure.

  36. Extra toes...

She hasn't let me fully examine her front paws yet. But she's got five on each back foot, so that makes two extras. And her front paws have either six or seven each. Apparently, I'm not supposed to know for sure yet.

Just want to say Congratulations :) What a lovely gift you've received!

  49. I found this, posted last July, on the Humane Association facebook page...

I have a lot to be thankful for on this day. As twisted as this might sound....somehow, I find myself "thankful" to the insensitive and negligent people who abandoned Polly earlier this year. I can't fathom how anyone could possibly just leave a pet on a balcony and turn their backs on her. But if they hadn't done so, Polly wouldn't be here with me.

God bless the good Samaritan neighbor who rescued her, and the wonderful family that fostered her for two months, and the staff at the vet clinic who have cared for her for the past several months.

    Carl

aw.....I'm so glad she has you now! cat_pet_icon

    you'd be surprised.
The most common excuse in our shelter is "life changes". I'm moving and can't take the pet with me or I am moving somewhere and no pets allowed.
One man had 2 cats, got married and his new
wife had cats and they weren't getting along so he dumped his cats at the shelter. The maine coon was so shellshocked and frightened that it wouldn't
even come out from under the cages for months. It's still being fostered somewhere.

Don't bother to question..........some things are just meant to be. You and Polly were MEANT to be.

I am so happy for you, it brought tears to my eyes, again! Anything with kitties and I'm pure mush.

She is such a beautiful girl and you were both so lucky to find each other. I've had the same thing happen to me when I was in the lowest point of grief. There are so many beautiful babies that need homes and so many of us that NEED them.

Bless you Carl and Polly too. cat_pet_icon

    Carl,
I am thrilled for you, and so are Bob & Mullet. You and Polly were meant to be. Yea, she'll get used to the noises. Dallas has gotten used to any little noise in this house after his family threw him away and he lived outside for a couple of years. If Polly gets scared, she has her guy to run to. Happy Thanksgiving!

  54. After several dates, she seems to trust me, charmer that I am. ;-)

Miss Polly has five toes on each back paw, and seven on each front paw. So six "extras" in total. More than enough for a fifth paw :D

I am so happy that you and Polly have found each other. She looks like a sweetie pie :D I get a chill thinking of her on that outside landing  How can people be so cruel

Looking forward to hearing (and seeing) more about how Polly is loving her new life!

Holy smokes Batman! I'm not on the board for a couple days and look at what I missed!

You have a new live in girlfriend! But do you realize she has a moustache?! Can you do anything about that to make her more girlie looking?

Congratulations on your new addition. May you both enjoy a long, happy, healthy life together.

Phew I got concerned that you were steppin out on Miss Dian, so glad that you aren't!

Carl, I'm so happy for you :)
That was so sweet the moment you two knew you were meant for each other, putting her paws on your shoulders and purring in your ear. That makes my heart melt, too :D
I wish you many many many many years of snuggles and smiles.

Carl, my heart is so filled with joy, I'm ready to spill over. I'm not a writer, so you won't know how happy I am for you.
Read these words and know that my heart is beating a little faster, and tears are welling in my eyes, about to spill.

The moment Polly snuggled under your chin is when you were a goner.....that's how I ended up with Clancy.

I will lie awake all night now thinking of all the beautiful and/or, clever things I will wish I'd said, but right now I'm just happy for you.
You're a good man, Carl, you deserve to be in a committed relationship with a beautiful black and blond haired girl

Yes, Carl. That would be me. I was feeling like Rip Van Winkle and had to do a little Ellery Queen-ing, searching this site for clues.

I loved reading this story!!! I found a cat in my apartment building laying crushed up face first against the brick wall in the stairwell. He was left behind, outside, by some people who moved away. I grabbed him and he lived under my bed for eleven days. I already had three other cats.

I will never forget my Wally and how he helped me as each of my cats went to the Bridge that year due to old age. It is because of Wally that I always get another cat to help distract me a bit from losing another. That's Wally's legacy.

Your story reminded me of how one door closed for Polly while another door opened, and there was you.

What a lovely story. I remember you have been there for me when I have needed help and I'm thankful to know that you have a feline friend with which you can share many new laughs, love, and good times together.
Belatedly, I also sorry for your loss.
I wish you all the best. Furry snuggles!
