    Hi
My non-diabetic kitty, Benji, has recently been diagnosed with worse CKF...so I'm starting to give him low-phosphorus foods (but NOT renal food). Of course, this means all the kitties are getting the low-phosph foods. They have all been on low carb, no grain canned.

I did look up the lowest phos brands but wondering if any of you out there have any others...I've had to cut out Wellness, Core, Merrick...all of which I was giving regular.

What I've come across so far that seems to have phosphorus of less than .5% or under 1% are the following:

Organix brand -- ORg Turkey and ORg Spinach AND ORg Turkey Brown Rice & Chicken (ok here are some grains)
Soulistic - Harvest Sunrise chicken & pumpkin, Good Karma Chicken
    Castor & Pollux Organix Turkey
    Wysong Au Jus
    By Nature Organic

Does anyone have any others? My cats liked Soulistic at first but seem to throw it up frequently. They do not seem to be crazy about any of these and I know they miss their Wellness. Since Sebastian died in September, none of my 6 kitties are currently diabetic and while I'm hesistant to give any grains, for Benji's sake if I had to do a little bit of that, maybe it's ok to keep that phosphorus down...

I've stopped giving the raw now since I found out that was high in phosphorus.

any ideas welcome! (and I cannot make my own food, btw)

Tanya's Feline CRF website has tons of info, including ideas for dealing with the upset stomach tha can come with CRF.

Ex: One option for vomiting is 1/4 Pepcid about 20 minutes before a meal, 1-2 times a day.

Neither of my cats have CRF, but I do feed them the Friskies Special Diet because it's low in carbs, low in phosphorus, and low in cost. :D I do worry about the long-term damage of diabetes on Mikey's kidneys and liver because he was diagnosed so young and will probably have it the rest of his life, which is one of the reasons why I picked the low phosphorus Turkey and Giblets Special Diet (another reason being Mikey is allergic to red meats  ).

IF you feed Friskies, you might want to read what Dr. Lisa says about that brand in this link: http://www.catinfo.org/?link=cannedfoods

I'm a little confused about the phosphorus levels...in the Tanya's CRF pages it says to aim for 0.5% and from what I can tell, foods that hover at 1% or more are considered high. But then I've seen other recs where they call something low phosphurs--like Wellness--and it's 1+% but the mg amount is around 200-225mg and that's considered low....but to be around 0.5% it looks like, acc to Dr Lisa's charts--the food must contain less then 150mg...

I'm trying to buy something that myt CRF kitty can eat along with the other 5 who are fine...and also that they all WILL eat. Benji's phosphours blood levels are not high but I'm doing this as a precursor to any other treatment. And because he's not high, not willing to give him a binder at this point.

But it's confusing knowing what food to buy since different websites seems to recommended different foods as being 'low'

thank you for all your tips

The Friskies Special Diet only contain brewer's rice and are only 5% carbs (versus regular Friskies at ~8%).

My diabetic cat has CRF, as well as one of my non-diabetic cats so I feed them all low carb low phosphorus food. I tried the Friskies Special Diet turkey and giblet, and it was like crack to my cats. They go crazy for it like it's kitty McDonalds or something. That worried me, so I've been staying away from it. I found this link in one post discussing this same topic and have been using some of the low carb choices from this list. So far so good.
