Basil, At the Bridge Now

It is so so hard to come here and say that today, we had to help Basil across The Bridge. This group was a lifeline for us when we needed it most. And it was with the help of the wonderful people here that we were able to get Basil OTJ almost a full four years ago.

But in November, he was diagnosed with a severely enlarged heart and some kidney issues. It was a tough three months walking that line, finding foods that he could eat (thank you thank you thank you to the people who made all those charts with carbs AND phosphorus) and that he would eat. We tried our best but he was steadily loosing weight. Although even today, he was taking a little walk about the house, sitting in our laps and purring. His blood sugar remained in control, even with moving up to foods with 20% carbs and even the occasional 1/2TB of kibble just to get some calories in on bad days.

He just couldn't hang on anymore and we did not want him to suffer because we needed him. He was 17 and a half years old and has been with us since he was a tiny kitten. The vet came to the house, and my son, christened as Son Bean here back in the day, held him because he was Basil's very favorite person in the world.

I have been lucky to be owned by 7 cats in my life, and Rosie, his littermate sister is still with us. But Basil was the sweetest of them all. Sadly, we lost our little dog just under two weeks ago as well. It has been a tough time. Thank you for all you guys did for us. And for those of you struggling with the regimen of trying to get your kitty OTJ, believe me--it is worth it. I wouldn't give up one of those days with Basil.

Mannie and Stu ave prepared such a wonderful feast to honor and welcome their friend. I hope that all your wonderful memories will be of comfort to you. I know Basil will always be with you, tucked away in a corner of your heart.

How amazing that he was OTJ for 4 years. Seems likes yesterday the 2 of us were posting here. Basil went OTJ before Max did and
how I loved to imagine all of Basil's spiffy wardrobe.
I think of you often, old timers with a wonderful bond between us.
Basil has many friends waiting for him, paws wide open.

Am so very sorry for the loss of your sweet boy. What a gift those 17 1/2 years were..but never long enough. I know you will miss him terribly.
That deepened bond that occurs caring for them through this sugar dance is indescribable, but a gift we all know. He was so lucky to have you as his bean. Comfort and sympathies to you during this sorrowful time.

We miss them with all our heart but we have to believe that they are with us always and they are in a place where they are free from the pain. I know they stay with us in our hearts but also their souls stay with us to comfort us from the loss of not being able to see them, hold them, hear their purrs. Both of our sugarcats were diagnosed in 2009. Oh, I remember those days! I am happy that you were blessed with 17 1/2 years with Basil, yet it is hard to think of another one joining our precious angels at the Bridge.

I'm so very sorry about Basil. I'm so sorry when any kitty crosses but when it's one of the gang that was here when Alex and I came on board it's particularly sad to me. But on the other hand, Basil will have so many of his old buddies to play with.I know Alex and all of our GA's will show him the way.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and hopefully your wonderful memories of your sweet boy will bring you comfort in the days, weeks and months ahead when it will be the hardest.

Again, thank you so much. I do believe that until you take such intense care of another being the way we all do or have done for our sugar kitties, you can not know the bond that is possible. I still think I hear him at times. I hope he is at a kitty party right now with all his special pals who preceded him there.
