I'm starting Mottyl on Lantus tomorrow. Her PMPS tonight was 270 but I'm not giving any insulin bc I don't want to risk overlap.

Her chart is below for info on how she's done on Caninsulin.

I'm feeding her Purina D/M. I've been told it's not the best (except by my vet) but I don't think I can handle a food switch and insulin switch at the same time. Will get used to the Lantus first.

Am a bit nervous; wish me luck!

Just dropping in to say welcome. There are really smart people that will help you adjust as needed. I've only used lantus so I can't tell you what to expect.

Also dropping in to say welcome to Lantus Land!

Skooter has only been on Lantus as well, so can't really give any advice....I CAN, however, echo the fact that there are some really super smart people here that will be able to help you with the transition to Lantus!

    Hi Anna,

I switched to Lantus Insulin about about 10 months ago. My cat was on Prozinc before. Lantus is one of the recommended insulins for cats since it is more long lasting.

I got a lot of help from this group when I switched. Welcome!

    Welcome.

Welcome to LantusLand! What will be the starting dose? Any chance you can get a midcycle test in the AM and in the PM cycles? We recommend a pre-shot test for safety (which you are doing, great job!) and a midcycle test to find the nadir (to determine the dose). Be sure to ask any questions that you have. People here are amazingly generous with their time and expertise. We are all crazy cat people and want to help Mottyl get better. :D

  6. Hi Anna,
Don't fret about the food right now. The DM is fine as far as carb content goes.

    All,
Make sure and check out Anna's posts from the past few days on the Health forum. She might need some advice on "creative scheduling" given her work schedule and "every 12 hours" might not be practical or possible on occasion.

    Anna

It is important what dose you start her on. It would normally be 0.25u/kg of ideal weight or if she is underweight then it would be 0.25u/kg of current weight.

Welcome to Lantus Land! We are all happy to help you and Mottyl anyway we can. Great job on the SS!

Thanks all! I'm starting her on 1 unit, as per the vet's recco - she's a big lady, 6.35 kilos, so it's a conservative dose. I will increase it as needed, when the time is right.

I can do a midcycle check in the AM but not for the PM cycle, will be at work. I can do one around 4 AM when I get home. Will start a new thread with her numbers tomorrow.

Thanks! It feels less scary to start this knowing so many people are around to help.

Hello Anna - just wanted to add my greetings. Neko started on Caninsulin but didn't look nearly as good on it as Mottyl does. I shot Caninsulin one cycle, then Lantus the next. I too waited until a bit after the insulin switch before changing food (to raw). Good luck on Lantus, lots of reading in the starred Sticky Notes above. Don't be overwhelmed by all that's there - just get a feel for what information is there. I still reread some of the key Sticky Notes.

All, Anna and Mottyl are very new to how to handle FD, but amazingly smart and wise from the get-go. They need some help with getting a hypo kit ready, and how to handle low pre-shot numbers - they're really new to expectations for the sugar dance. They're in a good place here, so best wishes Anna, and get in touch whenever you like.
