Yesterday

Good Morning, Everyone,

Rusty had a good night and ate all his nighttime food. This morning he has eaten all of his breakfast already! Maybe later I'll be able to get him to eat his lung treat, too!! He's in his perch over the radiator. We just had a good combing.

We're having a heat wave: 18 degrees this morning. No new snow, but we have a good base on the ground and this afternoon we will go snowshoeing for the first time this year. It will be interesting to see how my hamstring does. The only way to find out is to go out! Really frigid temperatures are expected for the end of the week, so today is a good day to hike on the trails at the VIC (Visitors' Interpretative Center at Paul Smiths College).

What a nice start for Rusty today. Love those blues, and hope he makes it to the lagoon today. Enjoy your lung treat Rusty. Remember, it is good for you.

YAY! It is above zero there today. Have fun with the snowshoe. I hope that goes well, no issues with the hamstring. Paws crossed for you. I had that issue early last spring, sure made it tough, but we went anyways, just took it easy. Have fun today! and enjoy the beauty out there.

p.s. A program entitled "The White Plague" is being shown on PBS TV tonight (check your listings). It is the story of how the village of Saranac Lake NY became the center for tuberculous treatment in the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century. As some of you know, our house was originally a TB "cure cottage".

I hope that you have an enjoyable walk at the VIC. Thanks for the TV show tip. I had already set my DVR to record it, as it looked interesting from the program description, but I didn't realize that Saranac Lake would be featured in the program. I will look forward to watching it.

The Lagoon is rockin' today! The show sounds very interesting. The name is The Forgotten Plague. I even figured out how to record it, usually Anne does that. She's the TiVo Queen. I hope the hamstring does good today.

Rusty decided to bounce this evening. He didn't like being left alone all afternoon. But he ate all his fuds. Now he's asleep, waiting for us to watch TV.
(Yes, the name of the PBS program is The Forgotten Plague. Sorry to garble the title. I had it confused with the vernacular name for TB as the "White" plague.) I think that there will be a focus on Saranac Lake, since Edward L. Trudeau founded the sanatorium here and was a pioneer in TB treatment. He conducted experiments with rabbits: half were kept in the darkened basement of his lab (to simulate how TB patients were kept in indoor wards) and half were put on a little island in Spitfire Lake (called "Rabbit Island" now). The ones in the basement died and the ones on the island thrived (because of the fresh air and being out in it all the time). Trudeau wanted his patients to "cure" on porches year round--even in our very cold winters. Therefore many houses here have "cure porches" on which the patients sat in deck chairs, wrapped in rugs. Our house has 4 small upstairs rooms where TB patients lived. Each room has it's own cure porch, and the porches are separated from one another by glass windows so that the patients couldn't re-infect one another.

Our snowshoe hike was beautiful. We did about 4 miles and were the only ones on the trails. My hamstring was OK, but I feel it now!! I drank some tart-cherry juice as soon as we got home (and put some arnica gel on my leg).
