Gobbles has all 5 Ps in place. He's tightly regulated and averages about 100. With regard to the lump on his neck: I took him to another (regular) vet for a second opinion. He did a thyroid panel and fna of lump. The thyroid panel was in normal ranges and the previous labs (comprehensive blood and urinalysis) looked good. The findings for the second fna were the same as first vet who did a fna in June: fatty cells! Regular vet said if the lump continues to grow it can potentially cause problems because of the location (getting close to jugular if it continues to grow). Therefore, I am having it surgically removed this coming Monday. The vet said he is healthy enough for the surgery and anesthesia, and that the surgery will take 40-45 minutes; he will have a few stitches and they will give him a long-lasting pain shot that should last a few days. I will be dropping him off early Monday morning and pick him up sometime in afternoon. While I hate having to put Gobbles through surgery, I think it is best to have this taken care of asap.

Vines for a good surgery and quick recovery. It's great that it is a fatty tumor.

Good luck to Gobbles on his upcoming surgery! Spottie has a little fatty lump on his chest too. It grew a bit, but has stopped growing and it doesn't seem to bother him.
Nice to see those nice numbers, too!!!!

Good luck on the surgery. I'm glad that Gobbles is doing so well other than the fatty lump.

A word of warning. Do you know what the "long lasting" pain shot is? If it is METACAM® (meloxicam) you might want to rethink agreeing to the shot. One of our members had her cat go into renal failure and was instrumental in getting the "Black Box" warning put on the label. There are other pain meds that are much safer, but have to be given more frequently.

THANK YOU so much for this information. I wrote the name down and will instruct my VET NOT to give Gobbles that shot. Hopefully there is something else they can give him....don't want my sugarbaby in pain...

Paws crossed for a successful surgery. Buprenorphine is one good choice for pain relief. Onsior is another option for short term post surgical pain relief.

Paws crossed all goes smooth like buttah! We think the vet should medicate the bean while our kitties are in surgery!

(BTW: 7/17 GOBBLES AMPS 118 - dosage is .50f every 12 hours) I just spoke to the vet's office regarding pain relief for Gobbles and cost of surgery. The doctor will be using Orudis (Ketoprofen) for pain management. I was told he does not use Metacam on cats--ever! I asked the tech if the Orudis was long lasting and she was unsure and advised me to ask the vet the morning of the surgery. The cost of surgery will be between $680-$820, which seems about right to me. I was advised by the tech not to give Gobbles anything to eat after 8 pm the night before surgery, although water was okay (which he doesn't drink!) up until we leave the house (he's going to freak out tbs). I was also told not to give him his AM Lantus shot, which I feel will be okay because he is on such a low dose and usually nadirs about 65-90....it will probably affect his BG for a few days, but I'm okay with that). So please ya'll say a special prayer or vines or whatever you believe in, for Gobbles' Monday morning surgery--I have to have him to the vet 7:30 a.m. Monday morning. I will have a chance to talk to the vet at that time if I have additional questions....I can't think of anything else to ask him, but feel free to shout out! This Momma Bean is worried, which I suppose is only natural--that's my very best friend having surgery!!!! and I pray all goes well and he isn't in pain and his healing is quick! FYI--the lump is about the size of a large grape, though a little flattened....slowly growing closer to his jugular vein, which is why I put such a rush on getting it removed

Sending tons of good surgery vines, and prayers, for good results, for Gobbles surgery, and for peace of mind for you, Kath. I'm glad you talked to doc about the Metacam. My docs stopped using it, long ago.
Big gentle hug for Gobbles' mommy.:)

We'll be sending healing thoughts your way on Monday. Please let us know how Gobbles does!

I'm glad Ann mentioned the metacam - that's what I was thinking of too when you said "long-lasting pain relief." Better to be in some discomfort than have your kidneys shot. There is info on Metacam on Dr. Lisa's site, if you are interested, at www.catinfo.org

If the vet doesn't give any buprenorphine, Onsior works pretty well for pain relief.

If you have any way of refusing the ketoprofen and asking for buprenorphine or a pain med that is not an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory), I'd encourage you to do so. Ketoprofen is similar to Metacam. It should be administered for no more than 5 days at the absolute maximum and because of it's pharmacology, can have an effect on the kidneys. From what I can tell, it doesn't have an indication for pain management cats -- it's an off label use in the US. BJ mentioned Onsior. It's also an NSAID. Personally, I'd steer away from any of the NSAIDs unless they are clearly the best or only alternative (e.g., some cats become agitated on opiates like bupe). Meds like Onsior are new so there is no data on the longer term use. All of the cox-1 and cox-2 NSAIDs can have an effect on renal function. Given that FD can also have an effect on the kidneys, I'd stay away from any drugs that can have a negative influence on kidneys.

Just wanted to send some good vines for Gobbles for Monday and calming vines for the bean. My civvie Minka has had a fatty tumor removed, as has Cinco. Both came through beautifully. We'll all be watching for updates.

No AM shot today -- BG tested 106 at 7:00 am. I just dropped him off and am a nervous wreck. I told the vet the lump seemed bigger to me since I last saw him on 7/6/15. He thoroughly felt the lump and said he was uncertain exactly where it was, and that the way if felt today did NOT feel like it was on a lymph node...possibly thyroid although his thyroid tests were all good HOWEVER I read that a person/animal can have a lump on their thyroid and the thyroid readings are still good. Funny thing--my husband was diagnosed with multiple nodules and a 1.5" nodule on his thyroid....his doctor did an fna via ultrasound and the results of the biopsy were benign.... Vet will give him a thorough physical before the surgery and call me if there are any problems, issues. I'm trying to keep busy today to keep my mind off Gobbles; I cried when we dropped him off and am now trying to chill out. He will have pain control, but the vet and MYSELF feel that he will NOT have any post-off pain meds that have to be given via pill or plunger--I told the vet that with his throat being cut and stitched I did not want to try to pill him or force any medicine in a liquid form. If he is still in pain a few days after the surgery, the vet is willing to give him a pain shot. Period. Please keep Gobs in your thoughts and prayers today or whatever you believe in. Thanks!

Good vetty vines! One of my kitties went through a similar surgical removal of a fatty tissue lump. Results were excellent. We too did not need to give any post surgery pain meds. I am sure all will be well for Gobbles.

Thanks kindly Michelle. I had two different vets fna the lump and both said "fatty tissue". Was the lump your kitty had removed on the neck/throat region?

BJ's was on the side of her face, near the ear. So no, not the neck. It was determined it be more of a "Surface" growth and really did not penetrate much down into the tissue. She recovered very well, tolerated the Cone , so she wouldn't open her incision, well.

Gobby's home now and resting. The vet said the lump was a lipoma beneath the skin. He has 15 stitches starting beneath his chin down vertically about 4",and goes back to the vet in 2 weeks to get the stitches out. No cone due to where the cut was made. Total cost of entire procedure, including return visit, was only $663.00. Post Op pic...

She is doing awesome! She had 4 extractions and a mass removed from her belly. Just waiting for the biopsy from it now. She has 12 stitches and they will come out in 2 weeks, and its healing nicely. She got bupe(pain med) for the first 2 days, and appears to have no discomfort now, and is eating well. Thanks for asking. Im so glad your vet said the mass was a limpoma, and not something worse. My doggie had a limpoma removed a few years back and did well, and is 15 now.
