Gracie’s Yesterday...Welcome Home

Prayers for Bron and Sheba as well as Minka this morning; great news for Oren!!!!

Try to be brief: Gracie seemed great yesterday but as the hours progressed, she was breathing through her mouth more and sounded really raspy but she was in a great mood and chatty ...moving all over house. At 4 a.m., she was really, really breathing through mouth so I took her to ER. Everything normal and puls ox 100%. Chest, abdomen, heart looked fine on u/s. DX: URI and treatment was to put her in steamy bathroom so when I got home, I put her in her carrier and steamed up our shower (really large) and she and i sat on the bench where it was dry but a little steam moved through. She seemed better. She was fine at AMPS; ate well out of syringe (because she’s so sniffly, eating from plate is difficult). Mike got up at +2 and was a different cat. Hiding, looked sick, not interested in eating, just wanted to be left alone. He took her back to ER. Will update later.

I know you’ve really turned on the miracle prayers for us but have to ask for a few more. Thank you so much.

 

Oh no Marje, sending all the very best miracle prayers I can muster for sweet Gracie. I hope it is nothing that cannot put be right very quickly. Hugs and prayers to you and Mike and for Gracie's complete recovery.

when they did her ultrasounds, did they look around elsewhere.... like lungs...
one of my dr's looked all over Shadow ( for free) , it wasn't just a targeted area....
its like they missed something.....

Dear Aunties and Uncles: please do something about my helicopter parents!! Dey keeps taking me to da bad place and i knows i do much better if dey leave me at home!

Many thanks for coming by with more prayers and support.

They had us take her off the cerenia and ondansetron yesterday because she had been eating so well and they are trying to not overload her liver but we think she was doing so well because of the meds. When Mike took her back over, everything was still fine....they did all the same tests and all her vitals were still excellent. Her breathing had improved because of the steam showers but she had some crusties in her little tiny nose that I had not been able to get to. They think she is just feeling bad from the URI (she’s already on clavamox in case it is bacterial) and possible tummy upset. They sent her back home but the vet from hell was there again and she was more helpful (did not discuss diabetes with Mike) and she told Mike she thought we should restart the cerenia because it has so many benefits besides just anti-nausea. She’s been showing some signs of nausea so we’ve restarted all those drugs and I gave her a good dose of aloe vera and water for her tummy. She’s feeling pretty darn punk today but her breathing is much much much better. She’s drinking a ton of water and doesn’t get too far from the water bowls but that’s due to the lasix and the pred which we are decreasing. She’s sitting on one of her cardboard loungers right now and looking outside. Not being in her sick spot is also a good thing. After I get back from running some errands for her, I’m going to steam her again.

The fantastic news is that the cardiologist (same one that sees Tobey) was able to squeeze her in tomorrow. He comes from Phx every Thursday and was willing to come by our vet clinic and echo Gracie tomorrow so we should have some more definitive news about her heart and her prognosis. We are so very hopeful all these treatments will turn it around....weaning her off pred, the enalapril, and the lasix (hopefully that is short term).

I don’t think either one of us slept last night except in tiny spurts. We feel we’ve aged ten years this last week but we are hopeful because it’s huge that she’s breathing well and all her stats are staying excellent. Now to get the nausea back under control and pray for a good echo tomorrow. Thank you all so much.

She's a complicated and sensitive kitty with a lot going on right now, so you are doing exactly what she needs you to do. Keeping a close eye on her status and fine tuning her meds is going to help her come through this. You are the best parents a kitty could have. I'm still sending every prayer I have here.

More prayers and good thoughts coming her way. Hang in there and if you need to steam her - I used to put my kitty Xena under a towel with me and a humidifier. Seemed to deliver the best steam results. I tried the bathroom but seemed that all the steam went to the ceiling and not much down by the kitty and me. I used to have a pretty big bathroom.

Oh my, what a hellacious ride you've been on, Marje! Sorry I haven't been online, so I didn't know, but you and Gracie have been in my constant thoughts and prayers the whole time, anyway. I pray that getting the nausea meds back in place will help her feel better now, and getting rid of the Pred will finish that job. Vetty vines for tomorrow. You are blessed with some wonderful medical help (even that closed-minded vet turns out to be okay as long as it's not FD-related!). I hope you and Mike can take turns getting some sleep tonight.

I couldn't imagine....very difficult times for all of you. Ask about Anzemet..when Doodles was at his worst it did help. It's basically a anti-nausea med that is injectable. In the meantime our prayers are with you all and hope for a little more sleep tonight and Gracie feels better soon.

Marje & Mike , we know how draining this must be for you. But Gracie is strong and she has courage and she will get through this. It's good that she'll be able to have the echo tomorrow. Check if this is OK with your vet.
The eyes drain into the sinuses.
Giving sterile, preservative-free (no sting) moisturizing drops in the eyes may help loosen up the mucus in the sinuses to help it drain.
One such product in the US is Systane. You can get it in a small vial, or individually packaged droppers.
(Works for humans, too.)

 

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and suggestions. I did try a vaporizer with nothing but water. It just didn't do the trick. I also got her down lower in the shower with a towel over her carrier and that seemed to work best. She actually sounds pretty good tonight but she is feeling really bad. They had us stop the cerenia and ondansetron because they are processed through the liver and she seemed to be doing well. I think it was a big mistake.....she just feels terrible. It breaks our hearts. Hopefully she can pull it together enough to so see the cardiologist tomorrow.

I probsbly won't be back on tonight....watching her closely.

What a courageous girl you have! Keep breathing, Gracie...hang in there and let the cardiologist help you tomorrow.

 

The small vial has preservatives, the individually packaged droppers do not. I found out the hard way.

We had two really stuffed persians in the shelter that got a dropper of saline solution in the nose. Sort of like kitty neti-pots.

Sending vines for a restful night, and a chance for the helicopters to land for a while for refueling. Good echo vines also on the way.

 

Vines for a peaceful, restful and uneventful evening. May tomorrow bring nothing but positive news.

 

Now, the Systane preservative-free ones are labeled. They come packaged in the little droppers. The twist of tip can be replaced on the tip of the dropper, if you don't use all of it.

At vet...:Gracie's BP dropped too low last night so I rushed her over and they kept her. I think she's stable now so they will send her home and she sees the cardiologist this afternoon. I hope he's got another heart drug in his pocket that doesn't affect her BP.
