    Hello Everyone!

Sushi had a huge fight with my other cat right before our BG reading and after a few days of great numbers we are having the worst reading so far 569. He is lethargic, miauing a lot and just won't stop drinking. He doesn't want to eat.

What shall I do? Shall I give the caninsulin shot anyway now?

Thanks so much for the help.

    Love,
    Sara

How confident are you that you'll be able to get him to eat in a little while when he's calmed down?

With him that high, I think I'd go ahead and give his insulin and just keep encouraging him to eat....maybe put him in a quiet room by himself with some food so he doesn't have to worry about the other cat

I have to be honest...I can't be 100% sure that he is going to eat... He has proved to be very hard to stabilize foodwise... But he won't feel better if he doesn't have his insulin, so it is hard...
His behaviour is really weird because he is lethargic in the way he moves, but he doesn't stop moving and miauing... It is drinking like crazy...
The other cat is separated now... I'll try again...

He is not even sniffing the food. He is not feeling well at all. I think I'll give the shot anyway, leave him alone for a while and see if he does eat when numbers start to drop... He's on quite a low dose anyway because of his flunctuation in apetite.

Sushi refuses to eat. Wet or dry. He just miaus laudly walking weirdly around or lays on the floor looking miserable.

Have you tested for ketones in the urine?
If he is lethargic and drinking like crazy he could be dehydrated.
If he is not eating and is lethargic I think it would be a good idea to take him to the vet as he may be ill.
He could possibly have pancreatitis or may have ketones in his urine.....

We are going to the vet this afternoon. This not eating is recurrent but not as severe as today. I can't afford anything else on top of what we are already doing, so I hope this is just a matter of not being regulated yet.
I think he needs another insulin. Last time he wasn't eating I tested for ketones and it was negative. My ketone strips got spoilled for some reason, even though I stored them correctly. Since I was waiting for a blood ketone reader through the mail I didn't buy more, because they are expensive. The Christmas delays are affecting everthing on the mail, so my ketone reader is already a few days late...

Thank you so much for all your help,
    Love,
    Sara

I am glad you are going to the vet....very wise of you. I hope it is something easily fixed..
If he is just dehydrated he may just need some Subcut fluids. Sheba always brightens up after the fliuds.
Please keep up posted. Good luck

Was Sushi fine before the fight with the other cat? I am sure you have looked him over really well to make sure he doesn't have any broken skin. Wondering him he sprained something in the fight thus the crying and moving slowly.

It wasn't a serious fight... It was a silly fight. The other cat annoys Sushi and jumps on him when he is hungry to get our attention and to speed up feeding time.
There was no biting, no scratching...there wasn't even any fur flying around... I just said it was huge because my other cat was really annoying and won't stop coming back to annoy Sushi... I think it is something else... He did not eat and I gave him the insulin anyway and his numbers aren't dropping.
He is not crying anymore and stoped moving... I am going to give him a water bottle to sleep on and try to keep him confortable...

I hope things will improve and he will start eating ASAP Have you tried warming up his food? It makes it more aromatic and sometimes will get them interested. Also, a little sprinkle of parmesan cheese or a bit of chicken broth or tuna water. Sometimes a little enticing helps to stimulate the appy. , Glad you are going to the vet. Keep us posted.

Thank you, Dear Bobbie, but those are all things that I tried in the past... Not even the fortiflora works. When he is like this he only feels worse if I push him with food. He gags and starts licking his wiskers... It doesn't look good... :(

I still tried Bobbie's tricks anyway, but without success... The vet is in 1,5h...

We had an amazing few days... Sushi looked and acted happy. He was eating amazingly, his asthma was great, his BG numbers were lowering... I was made to believe that we were finally getting somewhere...
I don't know what is wrong now and I feel like a failure... I've been giving this cat all We've got... What am I doing wrong??

Thank you all for your support!

    Love,
    Sara

Ah, Sarah, you are doing an amazing job and you aren't a failure. A failure would have euthanized their cat when DX FD. To quote, I think it's @Vyktors Mum , says, sometimes it's just because it's a cat and cat will do whatever they want to.....or something like that. Try not to stress too much, let's see what the vet says. It could be something so simple like constipation. Keep us posted when you return. Sending you lots of hugs :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

PS, my cat Sug, GA used to get so constipated and she would be nauseas and stop eating.

Aww, sweetie, you're not a failure at all! You are doing everything you can to help Sushi, you're a great Kitty Mom! Sometimes things that are beyond our control just...happen. It's not because you've done anything wrong, so please don't beat yourself up about it! We've all been in a similar position at some time, I am certain.

How is Sushi now? Any change?

Please let us know what the vet has to say!

Sending love and all positive thoughts!

You're not a 'failure', Sara. Feline diabetes can be a very steep learning curve at times - for all of us. Don't be so hard on yourself. :bighug:

I posted on your other thread earlier, not realising that you'd also started this one.
I do strongly suspect that the insulin dose is too high. And I think it's possible that Sushi's blood glucose levels are dropping too low at times. It may be that this is causing him to feel out of sorts. But that's just my 'ten cents'....

Am really hoping that Sushi feels better very, very soon....

    Sending purrs and prayers,

    Eliz

    Hello Everyone...

Unfortunately we had to let Sushi go yesterday... I don't really feel like talking about it, but you have been amazing Friends for me and Aunties and Uncles for Sushi...you deserve to know...

We started the appointment and the vet was very worried. He was miserable by then. I was about to go mad... "He was great the past few days!! Great like in HIMSELF!Like I haven't seen in months!!What is happening?"
    Wasn't contipation.
She said that my spreadsheet had more information than they usually have and that she had been studying it and showing it to the other vets and even if he was on a slighty higher dose than he should or needed an insulin change wouldn't cause what she was observing. He was very different. It was something accute and serious.
She said he could be on ketoacidosis again but she wasn't feeling it. Last time she said it was ketoacidosis as soon as she touched him. Before testing.
She said our best bets were accute pancreatitis or cancer. He had that lump that we never had the chance to check on his abdomen on the right side that disapeared into his body.
We prepared for blood testing and for him to be admitted for more tests and for some fluids, pain medication, anti nausea and appetite stimulants.
He looked so unhappy that I asked her: Is this the right thing for him? Are we going to be able to make him happy again?
She responded something like that she was trying to find the right moment to have this conversation with us... She was afraid she was going to hurt us by introducing the subject... We asked for honesty. She said that even if they confirmed any of these diagnostics, the ones that can be treated, it was not going to be easy on Sushi. Even if he survived, it would not be a good life. He would be on a lot of medication and he was going to spend a lot of time there...Which he hated. And that would also rely on his asthma not flaring up...
We didn't want that for him... He's been through so much already...All I wanted was for him to be happy and live a life as closer to normal as possible... I didn't succeed.

I lost another piece of my heart... We became really close because of his multiple inhalers, pills, pokes and shots... He was the nicest cat ever... I didn't really wanted this...
I still can't believe that I had to make this decision...again... And that my little black silly monkey isn't here anymore...

Thank you so much to you all...

    Hello my Dearest Friends,

    Hope you are all well...
I just wanted to thank you all for you support and kind words in these difficult times after Sushi's passing...
It is getting better, as the new routine (or lack of) starts to settle...but I still miss him terribly...
I decided to stay in all the groups I am in as I really like it and feel that I am among likeminded people... I also feel the love you all send, everytime... I also think that I may be able to help someone someday with something...
Our other cat isn't doing that well since he saw the carrier returning empty from the vet. He cries night and day at the door if he is not at our lap.
I already talked with the vet nurses from the clinic and they all think that another cat may be the answer.
My husband is driving me mad wanting to buy a cat this time...I was considering another rescue or not at all... My favourite vet nurse told me to be kind with him, as he also lost 2 cats in about a year time, both from accute severe diseases (my soulmate female cat died last year of accute kidney failure, no time even to check for cancer) and that I might have to give him this one, even if I disagree. Also told me to be the smart one and be careful about it because if he made up his mind he is going to do it anyway and it is better to be involved and check what he is doing...
I accepted to meet a breeder tomorrow for a VISIT and I am...I don't know what I am... I have no idea of what I am doing... I think I may need help with it... Should I post it somewhere here?

    Love you all,

    Sara

Hi Sara - thank you for posting - so glad things are getting better for you
Sounds like there was/is a lot of grieving for sweet Sushi - who I am sure is watching out for his family from the bridge
Many people here, including myself, would not buy a cat, as there are so many precious babies who need homes, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do -- what kind of cat does your husband want to buy?

Oh Dear Carol... You are feeling my pain...
It's being hard to me, as I am very...let's call it passionate, about rescued cats... Never had other kind.
He wants a Norwegian Forest Cat... I am not saying I don't like them...of course I like them...They are cats...

Hi Sara, I'm glad you are beginning to heal from the loss of sweet Sushi. Every cat I have (14 total) are rescues, so I know where you're coming from. Not sure how things are in the UK, but in the US, there are often rescue groups that concentrate on particular breeds- My friend just got a rescued Bengal. Perhaps there is a Norwegian Forrest cat that needs to be rescued. May be worth an internet search to see.

    Hi Sara,

What a dilemma! Your vet nurse sounds very kindly and wise. I can see her point and also your hubby's but I'm like you in that I would far prefer to adopt a rescue kitty because they need the lucky break.

How about seeing whether you could agree a bit of a compromise: you visit the breeder with him tomorrow and then he goes to a rescue shelter with you on another day before you both make a decision together about who is going to be your new fur baby? Usually it's the kitty that adopts the beans - which could take the decision out of the hands of both of you and you'll both end up completely happy. :)

I'm wishing for the universe to send you both to where you'll find the right puss. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I can't thank you all enough for your support... You always seem to understand me in a way that most people can't...

Thank you... It has been an intense and quite painful day so far...

Well...Sushi's ashes arrived today and I fell in love with a very shy white lady cat who is also deaf...she is otherwise healthy, but you know how nobody wants a deaf cat... I know nothing about it and I am scared of making the decision to bring her home.

Can you help me with that in this other thread, please?
