Thank you for all the love and encouragement here.

Mocha fought valiantly but the pain was wearing on her greatly each passing day. Only dx with CKD last Wednesday but she was increasingly unable to be comforted.

My heart has a huge hole in it. She was adopted a few months after our horrible car accident and it took a solid year of my keeping to gain her trust. I was in severe pain and could literally not climb the stairs upright from the basement she loved. I kept trying to pet her, despite her biting and scratching. I wondered what did someone do to her that year they had her and returned her? She was horrified of a pom pom gently rolled to her. She would not sway her tail or purr for a full year. She finally realized I would not give up on her and she became my protector. She would defend me with neck massages and face rubs when I was upset or crying. My last massage was about a week ago.

Thankfully, I did have the idea to take her to our old home (pre 1/6/16) and she was always alive there in the yard and running and enjoying the inside (cry to be let in) and cry when time to leave. She rubbed my leg with her head and my face with her face the 1st time we went. Her thank you.

I am sorry I can't give you the thanks Mocha that you deserved, it should have been so much more. You are forever my baby girl. Your life was a hard one with fight of illness after another but you were strong and never once rebelled against the diabetes testing despite all the pokes. Your love for me I cherish.

Rest in peace finally and when you wake, may you be surrounded by fields of pampass grass to play in once again to your heart's desire, with no sunset to deter you.

What a valiant fight you and Mocha gave and I am so so sorry to hear that Mocha had reached the point where the fight was taking too much on her. I have followed your loving efforts to give her more/better time. Sometimes love is not enough and love is what is needed to allow our beloved furkitties to escape the pain. You gave Mocha everything she needed which includes the very sad decision to let her go.

Hold all your special memories close to your heart to give you strength and peace at this sad time.

that is beautiful, thank you....I laid her on a large pillow we have when I was snuggling with her to say goodbye. That pillow is my temporary substitute to hug the stuffing out of it. It may be drenched tonight as I am used to having to get up like a fireman when she cried or vomitted in the middle of the night.

So sorry to hear it was time for Mocha to leave you. You were such a good bean and she knew love and that's the greatest gift we have to give. The fact that she learned to be able to return that love to you just proves how much you two needed each other and how much she was able to grow once she came to you

Fly free sweet Mocha and land softly...there are many at the bridge to welcome you until the time you are reunited with the one you love most... forever

You did so much for Mocha, coaxing her out of her fears and into a life of love, caring for her and helping her fight the diseases that brought her pain and discomfort, and finally, you gave her the most unselfish give of love and devotion - her freedom. Never question the decisions you made - they were all made from love, and Mocha finally found out what it was like to be loved when she let you into her heart. Now she will be in yours forever more. Just look in there when you miss her, and she'll be there, always.

You and Latte need to comfort each other now. You can help each other heal. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

(((Kari)))) My very, very deepest condolences. Your love for Mocha always shone through and you took such amazing care of her. I am just so very, very sorry for your loss. In between the stillness of your heartbeats, you will hear her purr.

It’s been such a lovely summer, I’ve been napping in the sun.
This morning, other cats and I enjoyed a long long run.
We chased butterflies together. I climbed high into a tree.
And now I think what woke me up was that small bumble bee.

I’ve yawned and stretched, and still I feel that something has begun.
He’s standing there in robes of white, and telling me to come.
I always run to Him you know, when He comes across the bridge
To see if we’re all having fun and if we’ve checked the ridge.

He gives tummy rubs to all of us and pets and cuddles too
I’m glad to see Him every day, when He comes into view.
Each day He takes a different cat, and chats with them a while
Then off that kitty starts to run. I swear they seem to smile.

But now He’s stopped in front of me. He’s said a name I know.
He said to look out towards the ridge. The sun is setting low.
I start to walk out toward the ridge, and then what’s that I see.
IT’S YOU! IT’S YOU! It’s really you. You’ve come to be with me!

My goodness you are running and I am running too!
You stop to bend, but I can jump and now I am with you.
I feel your kisses on my head, as I did in long off days
You’re holding me and hugging me, and into your eyes I gaze.

And now He’s walking with us, as you carry me once more
We’ve crossed Rainbow Bridge together. We’re here at Heaven’s door.
And He has held it open, and told us to walk through
That from now on and forever, I can always be with you.

Look to the heavens tonight and you will see Mocha's bright star shining down on you. What a brave girl she was, and how lucky to have you for her mamabean. Tonight is the full moon and all of our GAs will be at the Bridge Landing to welcome Mocha into their company. She will be "in good paws" until that wonderful day when you meet again.
Fly free, beautiful Mocha, and send your mamabean a sign that you have arrived safely at the Bridge.

    Beautiful. :bighug:

I was reminded earlier today of a sweet moment in time several summers ago that brought me such joy of a time when she was happy with no health issues. And, this poem also takes me there. In the summer, late afternoon, if you walk the grass there were these little white moths that flew up from the grass. They would do the same for her. In those days she knew her boundaries of a triangle and loved that space and she would walk and they flew and she would jump into the air to try to smack at them with her paws. It was a fun thing to watch her with nature. I have no picture of that but in my mind and the millions in my heart. She knew the word "outside" long before and even to her last moment....that word brought her life, joy....peace.

I have been playing a purr most of the day. I used to play it a few months ago around naptime for Mocha and Latte and it was always peaceful to my nerves. Latte does not purr as Mocha or as often so this is therapeutic for me. Perhaps someone else will find this so close to the sound we love. http://mynoise.net/NoiseMachines/catPurrNoiseGenerator.php

I had it on the other day and listened to her and I kid you not it was the same. So, this helps her stay with me in yet another way and comfort Latte perhaps. I dread waking w/o her....

I am so sad to hear of Mocha's passing. The grief is so tangible right now for you - I can feel it and it hurts. We've all been there and it doesn't really get any easier.

I do like to think of Mocha playing with the moths in the late afternoon sunlight. That's where she'll be when you see her again. Until then, treasure every sweet memory you have because all of those incredible thoughts define your heart today in a new way. Mocha's love for you lives there now and your soul will never again be parted from her.

    Rest easy, precious kitty.

I am so sorry for your loss. You are a very loving bean. That sharp pain, like a pin, is the depth of your love inside your heart. Tears can help it heal. Time too. Memories are gifts. Mocha knew such great love and now she is free and whole and watching you. Sometimes I wonder if they wonder why we are sad. I know she kisses you still, just quieter and not seen, but you will feel it in your heart.

Looked the calendar, she was 2 weeks and 2 days from her 9th birthday....but I celebrate her forever in my heart. She kept me going when the days were unbearable. She was always a bright spot.

I have never gone thru watching another pet after losing a pet and I am sure many have. Hopefully someone will see this so I don't need a new post somewhere.

How to Help a 2nd Pet Thru the Loss of the 1st?

She had time to see Mocha yesterday alone with me and her only. She looked so strange at Mocha and me. She passed around her to go hide under the bed but I am sure it was Mocha's last scream of pain from sedative that horrified her she was in danger.

She seemed pretty good late yesterday. Came out of hiding and went back on the bed. I let her examine Mocha's hair clips and she did for a long time very gently as if trying to take her in or bring her back.

Late last night she heard something or sensed something I did not and it caused her to rise to attention and look at the doorway, where Mocha often was passing. It was heartbreaking actually. Maybe there was a noise or maybe she just wanted to see Mocha come again.

We both were awake at precisely the same times as 1am and 3am, when Mocha was crying the prior morning. Latte was seeking more love and face kisses and she has not done that in so many months. She has just slept on the bed with me or a chair and no longer was looking for rubs and kisses. But, today she is. It makes is worse somehow for me. I know she loved her so much, she thought the world of Mocha.

My first cat was later named my shadow, he was literally a step away. Mocha, my baby. But, Latte, was really Mocha's shadow. She always saw her over us and watched her motion over us and followed her around. We both feel ripped apart no doubt.

I suppose it is time and attention for her but if something else?

It came to me to play the above purr link so it is on right by her. Only thing about that is I could not deal with silencing the sound last night so I had to turn it down vs shut down. I am such a mess.

You both need time to come to grips with this loss. I know when my Peaches was dx with kidney & heart failure, time was very short. It so completely caught me off guard, as he had been acting perfectly normal up until that night we went to the ER w/ labored breathing. Take your time, comfort one another, and know that your friends here are holding you up when you don't think you can do it. Wishing you peace at this very very sad time. Fly free Sweet Mocha, with love in your heart.

I am so sorry to read this... I know you were the best bean ever to one very special kitty. I will hope all the memories are of comfort to you. She will always be with you, tucked away in that corner of your heart. Fly free Mocha, land softly at the bridge. :rb_icon:

Latte is sure to miss Mocha as much as you do. When Rosie lost Basil--her littermate brother--after 17 1/2 years--she changed. She howled every evening and morning for months. Then, she began spending more time with us and has become less Grumpy Cat. :)

What can you do? I think just love her in the normal way and help her feel safe. Please put a little time in your day for caring for yourself as well. It's easy to forget that when grief is overwhelming us. (((Kari)))

I've been also dealing with this with Tobey and I had let him see Gracie after she crossed. He was extremely bonded to Gracie. The first few weeks he looked for her a lot but it was as if he thought she was just playing hide and seek. I had started new routines with him, spending lots of time and attention, and playing when he would. It took about three weeks for him to realize she wasn't coming back and then the depression hit. His herpes flared in his eye, he got soft poos, and wouldn't eat. He didn't want to play. He'd bury himself under her blankets. We addressed the medical issues right away and also put him on Energetix Rescue Calm, 3 drops, 3 times per day. I think that really helped him. I put him back on canned food and then slowly reintroduced his raw. I really, really think the Rescue Calm helped him immensely. I also gave him ignatia (put it in his water) which I started right after Gracie crossed but I'm not sure it was that helpful. At any rate, about two weeks ago, he turned the corner and now he is his old self......eating his raw great, poos normal, playing like crazy. He still looks for her but he seems so much better. He's got his happy face on and tail up. The link Sienne posted is really good info. I try to give him a lot of love and attention and we are building our own special times together. And I think it's really wise to not jump into getting another cat because you might think she is lonely. When the animal communicator we've used for 15 years spoke with Tobey, he told her he didn't want another friend if it wasn't Gracie.

    Sending you prayers.

She was allowed to sniff Mocha's hair the 2nd time (1st for today) and she sniffed it lovingly (just like yesterday) and much longer and then face rubbed my hand. She knows "we" are in the journey together. Sweetheart too.

Marje thanks for sharing from your heart. I am thinking the rescue remedy will be helpful but I know I need it for the balcony reno coming. I will need to order more. But, it helped her on moving day tremendously. Hub asked if we need another cat and I said no. I won't do that to her. She is extremely skittish and it took til this move for them to be co equals but she always loved Mocha and tried to be nose to nose everytime they saw each other. Mocha was blessed to have her and she may not have known how much. She wanted kisses just from me.

I promise I won't do a play by play but this morning (our usually 3 some time) she was looking for her and she saw a cat in our mirror of our buffet, and she ran for the image and realized upon close up it was not Mocha. She has never cared about our mirrors. That was sad to see the expectation crushed.

You could also think about a Feliway diffuser or two with the balcony work starting.

Gizmo didn't seem to have as much difficulty as Tobey. It has been a matter of establishing our own routines and giving him lots of attention. Gizmo is fundamentally a very happy and well adjusted cat. He loves everyone. He did search for Gabby for a few days but I also think he knew she was very fragile at the end.

Just to let you know....I did try Rescue Remedy for pets with Tobey and it wasn't enough. I had to go to the Rescue Calm which our vet suggested.

I had two Felliway diffusers in the small bedroom where Latte lives mostly and they were on all day and all night....I am so sensitive, even I smelled them. It may have helped her yesterday and I have them ready to flip back on.

I did not know there were different products in that line. Thank you, I will research and purchase the calm as there will be alot going on here.

We really need to sell our home. I do not want to go back anymore since that was her favorite place and I would need to clean the leaves from that area for spring. I don't think I can do it. I don't want to pay someone to disturb the sacred memories either. I am strange indeed. We dropped the price in order to hope to get this couple that is contemplating it to give an offer. We want to say goodbye.

First of all, Kari, you can give us a play by play of your morning if that helps you. We all understand what you are going through. What ever helps you to deal with it is okay. Vent here all you want. You are among kindred souls. :bighug:

Latte will need time to heal, just like you do. You can do it together, and I think you will each be helping the other. This will be a bonding experience for you, and as difficult as it may be, I think you will be glad you had each other share it with. Just follow where she leads and give her lots of love and attention. I'm sure Mocha will approve.

As others have said, be good to yourself. Latte needs you to stay healthy and be there for her. Mocha wouldn't want you to make yourself ill over her, she'd want you to remember your most special moments and smile.

I gasped when I saw the subject line of your thread. I had no idea Mocha was that sick. I'm so sorry it was her time to go. Many of us can feel the gaping hole her loss has left in your heart. I hope someday soon you'll be able to fill that hole with fond and comforting memories.

Cadwyk, one of my other cats, was completely devastated after Alex crossed the bridge. The two of them were very, very close. Alex cuddled with him and acted like she was his mommy (she wasn't) from the time he was a tiny kitten. Cadwyk would search the house looking for her... crying when he couldn't find her. We soon learned we couldn't as much as say Alex's name out loud because it would visibly upset him.

Since then we've spent so much "extra" time with Cadwyk... playing with and loving on him. He appears to have calmed down and seems to be feel secure now without her. It took time and lots and lots of attention. Keep lovin' on Latte. She'll be ok with your help... and she might even help you, too. I know Cadwyk has helped me...

Kari, it's been two months since Max went and her sibling Milly is doing much better now. I put a similar question on the Grief board and got lots of reassurance about Milly's behaviour.

I just wanted to say once again that I can't imagine where I would be w/o this place of comfort from each of you.:bighug:

It began with helping me successfully test and keeping the hope that we could do this.

We indeed gave it our all, until all was not enough. The more I reflect, I think her fight was to live for me, despite her own suffering.

I wasn't sure I could even post the parting here because I knew it would result in more tears. But, the love I felt and the genuine love for Mocha in only a few months made those extra tears embraced with a hug from each of you.

The next task will be to see if I can test my squirmy for BG, PICT0107.JPG as she laps up water. I hope we don't have to start a condo for Latte anytime soon. But, if I do, I know I can count on all of you to help me with that journey.

You are precious to me. Thank you.
    Kari

Yes...that was the link I left you but Google around to see if you can find it for less than Amazon. You might be able to.

I love all the photos of your beautiful girls. Many hugs to you at this horribly difficult time.

    Kari,

I'm so sorry to read this tonight. I know your heart is broken. Latte will need to mourn just as you do, but both of you will be ok.

Dear Kari, We are thinking of you and hoping that Latte will adjust. As Libby says, it is so important that our kitties grieve, too. The pictures of Mocha and Latte are beautiful. I hope that Mocha is settling in well at the Bridge and that she will send you a sign soon that all is OK.

:bighug::bighug::bighug: for you and scritches for Latte,

You did, give it your all, and Mocha knows this :bighug:
J.D. was sickly his last year and I looking back, think he was living for me.
J.D. was like a "mother" to my other cat Ginger since she was a kitten, and loved her, slept with her, snuggled with her, and protected her, like she was his own kitten. Ginger and I both were definitely in a significant period of mourning for over a month to 6 weeks after J.D. passed. I then got a kitten and her and my life changed. Mine with a little more joy in my heart because of Jackson's innocence, and Ginger's because she had something new to keep her interest and hiss at. I'm not saying to get another cat now, but it helped us a bit.
J.D. was always the number one cat because he was special needs, and Ginger was always the second cat, looking on. I knew that when J.D. passed that Ginger would need me and would need to finally be number one cat. I had to remember that she needed me too, while I was grieving. That took energy.

Take care of yourself now, in any way you can, and know that Latte will come around and will need extra love soon, too.

I love the purring link. I have it playing now. And, Ginger is next to me listening to it :)

thinking of you & latte, kari.

Punkin and Anya were a bonded pair. They washed each other's face and snuggled all the time. I think it was hard for Anya when he passed. She sought a lot of attention from us. We got 2 kittens after about 3 months and that was a mistake. I think one kitten would've been ok, but 2 scared Anya. They moved too fast and scared her. She also is more nervous, somewhat like Latte.

Don't rush into changes. You all need time to heal from this loss. You and Latte will both be ok, in your own time. :bighug:

Come here anytime, Kari. Once you're part of Lantus Lev Land, you're always part of this family.

Latte has been the 2nd cat and she only tried for a short time to change that but relinquished (I believe out of love for Mocha). It does take energy to focus away from our grief and yet that is likely the healthiest thing to do, esp when the cat that remains is hurting too.

I really love this purring link. I have it on all day today and might leave it up tonight. I used to sleep to it when we were at the old house many months ago and/or when my nerves were tense. I could feel my nerves relax to the sound and comfort and I saw it be a calming effect on both of my girls. I hope the site never goes away. I will probably see if they sell some cd version at the preset level. It is neat that you can change the speed of the purr and the tones of the purr. I have my favorite photo of Mocha on my desktop where I always kept her SS and it helps me to see this beautiful happy photo of her and to HEAR the purr at the same time. Somehow, it makes her presence with me less painful.
