Hi all. I haven't posted in a year. Zephyr was OTJ so quickly that I didn't get the chance to really get involved. I have you all to thank for his health! I may be needing your advice again...

Here it is in a nutshell:
    -Diagnosed last spring
-changed diet, lost weight, OTJ after one month of injections.
-continued to test 1-2x/week for a while, always in 60s-90s
-went a few months without testing.

I started testing him again a couple months ago, and he's been testing in the 140s-170s. His appetite wasn't changing, nor his behavior. The last couple days, he's been losing his appetite and testing from 90-110, still acting normal though.

    2 questions:

    1. Does he need to go back on? (I'm assuming yes)
    2. What could have caused this? We got him down to ~9.5lbs last year, and he hasn't gained an ounce.

Also, I assume I'm going to need to be careful with dosing since his BG has dropped to around 100.

Feel free to correct any incorrect interpretations on my part. I appreciate your help!

Pancreatitis, very common in diabetics, can cause glucose to rise, plus inappetance from pain and/or nausea.
I would hold off on insulin until
    1) you get him checked at the vet and
    2) he gets up to maybe 200 mg/dL on a human glucometer.

You'll want to post in Feline Health, too. which has a lot more folks checking it daily.

It doesn't look like his BG is high enough yet- but something is off.
Has he had his teeth checked ? Dental issues cause a rise in BG. I would be doing a vet visit with a full blood panel and exam, just to see where his values are trending. Also- is his diet still controlled?
Just some thoughts - I'm hoping to hear some experts opinions on this.

Thanks for the quick reply. I called the vet first thing yesterday morning and got him in this morning. Unfortunately, it's cancer.

I noticed yesterday he was suddenly looking a little round in his abdomen and thought I felt a mass. The vet felt the same thing. X-ray revealed fluid in the abdomen which kept her from seeing much else, but there were spots on his lungs. She said there's nothing they can do.

This is rough. He's 13, I'm 29, so I've shared nearly half my life with him. He and Bailey are best friends too. I'm definitely a "pets are family" type, and he's one of my best friends. Not sure how much he's suffering and how long to let it go on (if this should go in a different forum let me know).

Anyway, thank you so much for this resource. It was a life saver and huge source of hope and comfort when he was diagnosed last year. Because of you, he was only on insulin for a month, and ate a more suitable diet for the past year.

Thank you thank you thank you!

You will see when he is ready to cross. he may stop eating, hide, or crouch as though he is in pain. Depending on the type of cancer, there are some options to retard its progress, one of which is prednisone. Yes, that could raise his glucose and require insulin, so you'd need to decide if that was worth doing.
